Well we had our first weekend here in Idaho for general deer and was just wondering how it went for everyone. In my opinion we need some cold weather to make its way through.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-15-06 AT 10:47PM (MST)[p]You got some precipitation coming we just got some rain today here in Or. and it's moving east

Just received an e-mail from a gentleman I know that got a nice 4x4 opening day of Idaho. Waiting to see if he is going to post the pictures or if he wants me too. He is a Non-Resident too.

Well, we hunted the opener in 45. We say 17 deer, 16 were bucks, 7 were mature 4x4's. We got within 350 yards of a 27-28", but I wasn't comfortable with the distance. He is only 12 and I didn't want to risk wounding it so early in the hunt. Seems to be quite a few coming off the mountains, according to the fish and game guys at the check station, but not much large yet.

Went up Friday morning and set up camp. Friday evening hiked into the bowl we planned on hunting the following morning.
Seen 3 bulls...a rag horn, 5 point, and a decent 6 point....also seen a group of 3 bucks a forky, small 4 point, and a 3x4 that was about 25" wide and had 17"-18" g2's with pretty good mass...nothing I was looking for this early in the season though.
Saturday we headed down off that mountain and went to a different area to look around...seen a few small bucks and a bunch of does...along with a ton of cows and 6 or 7 more bulls.
Sunday we went to a different area to glass across a big canyon for a later hunt...seen about 60 does and 6 small bucks..and about 25 cows with a 6 point bull and a couple spikes.
So the weekend was full of animals but nothing that would go up on the wall.

It went pretty good for me. I saw a few bigger than the one I shot but the stalks just didn't quite work out. I was ready to stay a few more days but the family was with me and they were getting antsy to get home. Saw lots of small bucks, and a few bulls and cows. More hunters than last year in our area, but they thinned out after the opener. My daughter was really into it, she had a great time, that was really fun for me.

Good luck to all the rest of you!

Went OK for us, we spotted a nice 4x4 at daybreak and after letting my son shoot at him I ended up taking him. Got my boy shots at 2 other 4x4's, but his gun, borrowed from mom, is shooting low. He decided to shoot my gun from now on so hopefully we will have better luck later this week. Seen lots of does and fawns and several smaller bucks, but not as many deer as we usually see.

We just got back from unit 48 and had a great hunt. We filled 4 buck tags (2 4x4's and 2 3x3's) and 4 elk tags (1 bull 5x5 and 3 cows).

I am uploading some pics and will post them when I get some time.

RJ,
Is that 48 bull tag a hard one to draw? I was also in 48 and saw a pretty good 6x6, and lots of cows that I could have shot. I would love to see your pictures.

hunted hard on wednesday and thursday. Had a big'un below me in the fog for a half hour. Only had two 5-10 second windows to see him and decide if I wanted him. Too short of a window to get set up for the shot at that distance. Possibly same buck spotted on thursday at 800-1000 yards and feeding fast. Attempted a stalk but he was too cagey to be out in the open and vulnurable for that long. No shot. Trying my honey hole this weekend. Tookk a 30 incher there last year that had 6 inch bases. Hoping for a repeat but we'll see. Good luck to ya'll.

We hunt hard on Wednesday the 10th in an area that usually products for us every year. We say 2 deer. Here had been some loggin activity in the cover that the deer use and the weather we have had I think have made the deer nocturnal in that area. Headed out today for elk and deer. I hope to post some pictures next week from a successful hunt.
