Looks like getting some wheather and wondering what any of you thought about hunting unit 53 2nd rifle (10/21 to 10/29) Think they will be starting the migration and the beginning of the rut? Have never hunted it but was thinking about the minnesota creek road/area unless anyone has other suggestion. Any help would be appreciated. I'm a native arizonian and would be glad to return the favor if someone gets an Az. tag.

Just hope for weather and get away from the roads!!!! You might see slight rutting activity towards the end of 2nd rifle (mostly by smaller bucks) but for the most part mature bucks will be solitary or in small groups and tough to find.
Good luck!
ps
sorry i dont know anything about unit 53, the above is typical behavior of most of CO's deer activity though.

I agree with cohntr6. end of october is too early for "rutting" in most of the rockies, even up north. you will see younger bucks with does, but gennerally speaking, the larger, mature bucks will not be seen among the does until after the first week of november, and even then it dont really heat up until the mid to later Nov. There always are exeptions, but as a rule you can expect the mature bucks to be solitary right now, an maybe with another smaller buck. This time of year, I almost never see two big bucks together, it's always alone, or with a much younger buck. . .

Again, this is just what's "normal" or averge for me to see. I know there are guys that will say, "I saw three monster bucks together with nine does, on October 24 once. . ." but that's not the norm. I'd be glassing those nice little, quite, out of the way pockets, and watching over the rest of them. Dont get fixated on watching the main herd and then forget to look in those off the path places where the bucks hide!

Don, We got snow down to about 8000 feet last night. So bring some cold weather gear. The deer are not starting to rut yet.I see some does starting to migrate down but haven't seen to many bucks. It won't be long though. You should have a good hunt.Minnesota creek is a good area.Look at Minnesota pass above Beaver Res and the north side of Coal Mtn.

"Why the hell call it second if its the first"

Because the first "rifle" season is muzzleloader.

(at least that's how I rationalize it.)

Well the state calls it the first deer and second elk. To each their own. Good luck anyways, I'll be there hunting first deer and second elk! :)

Thanks for the info elkhunter. If you ever need some help in Az for elk, let me know. I was born and raised in az and just t hunted unit 10 archery and got a 355. Never hunted colorado deer so any info is much appreciated. My e-mail is [email protected].

We are heading up Friday but may not get there until dark or so. I'll give you a call. Thanks again.

Elkhunter, wondering where to camp on a location where we can access some good areas. I've got a 4x4 with chains and a winch and we are going to set up a wall tent. Will be towing a small trailer with an atv. What do you think.

There should be alot of places up Minnesota creek if they aren't already taken. There are few spots up towards Beaver Res.
Hope this helps,Elkhuntr

Had a great hunt and killed a 184 gross 5x4 that was 27.5 wide. Spotted him fairly early in the am 5 days into the hunt way up in the rim rock. Hiked in there and waited all day for him to come out. Was about to leave because it was thunder lightning and started to snow. I had seen a small buck bedded and remembered you said the big ones would be by themselves or with a small one. Seeing the little one kept me up there a little longer. When I got up to leave the big one finally got spooked and came out. I drilled him and he rolled like a sheep about 100 yards down. Thanks again for the info. I'll try to post a picture and can e-mail one directly to you.

Having problem posting the pic's. Can I e-mail them to someone who can post them?
