What's the Unit like?? Are there even any elk?? I'm really unfamiliar with it and wonder if anyone on here knows much about it.....;-) ;-)

It's been a while since I've seen a dutton or wasatch thread thought i'd toss one up just to see......

So do you know any good outfitters on the Wasatch? Hopefully drawing my tag there this year.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-23-11 AT 11:03AM (MST)[p]Kevin, i think you have already been in contact with the best there is on the wasatch.....stick with them nobody knows the elk on the wasatch like The phillips guys do, i Promise i might be related to them....;-)

Come on Roy, i heard the wasatch was all private, the DNR had killed off all the elk, and there are 5000 tags on it....hehe >:)

I hear it's a desert wasteland up there. Don?t go, don't do it. You?ll die of thirst before you see any of those rag horn Utard elk.

It was a good unit once upon a time. Then a couple of guides moved in, they never could quit talking about the unit and ruined it for everyone. :)

So what your all sayin is I should probably try and pull a North Slope Three Corners tag??? I hear that either that or grouse creek is the best that UT has to offer...... >-)

LAST EDITED ON Mar-25-11 AT 10:17AM (MST)[p]I know I've looked over 50 bulls on the wasatch in the last few weeks and only one would break 330. :)

There was a big Wasatch set picked up this week though. From the pic it looks like a legit 350+r.

Prism must be the last 50 bulls on the unit.....they all got bunched up together huh?

How high are you lookin Prism?? The bottom of a certain canyon near a certain city has probably 50 bulls, one over 350..... higher up you go the bigger they get.

I've been surprised at how high a lot of the bulls are given the snow. Saw a fella the other day at lodgepole campground lookin on the south facin slopes them elk are smart animals

Definitely not a lack of bulls. I'd say there's atleast 53 on the unit ;-)

Bulls are higher because they're getting pushed-a bunch. I've noticed they don't seem to be in their usual spots, but they're getting a lot of pressure.

Sure there's a few great bulls around, but by in large it's a bunch of raghorn to 330 bulls out there like usual.

Which by the way makes the big bulls you guys are killing all the more special and rare. Just imagine what you guys could kill on a "real" elk unit. Haha :) keep up the good work. There's bound to be a few shooters, I might even know where their sheds are ;-) or were :-( .

A solid 320"-330" Bull in the bottom of the Canyon this morning!

A Guy out of his Truck & heading towards the Bull!

Maybe He thinks he can see the Bull 'Drop Em'?

I don't care if they're big or small!
If they throw lead I like em all!
:p

380" My ass!:D

Prism I dunno what your talkin bout, there's 400" bulls behind every tree! Them 53 you seen were all off the front they just migrated to winter ground.......;-)

Honestly I don't think that we could do any better on a "real unit" then on this one. I still stand by my previous opinion, the Wasatch is the best unit in the state right now.

In my personal opinion less than 10% of the people who hunt this place actually know what they are doing. So with that, of those 50 people last year 3 bulls over 400" were killed. On the San Juan, there were 2 right on par with each other. We had two hunters take shots and have solid oppotunities at bulls that would have been at or above that magical mark. One of them hit the bull clean pass thru with his bow and he walked away the other spent 13 shells and never touched it. Had we been a bit more lucky that would have been 5 bulls off the unit.

Now the average Joe Blow is gonna kill a 320-330 bull thats the simple truth of it. For those who know how to hunt this unit however, it offers one a very very good opportunity.

Factor in the quality of hunt, number of elk, and overall experience, The Wasatch is one hell of a good time for anyone.

I know Bowhunt i'm killing the draw odds.....sorry haha

I agree 99% the wasatch is one of the best units in the state for an amazing hunt, and you guys produce some AMAZING bulls! One of the best elk experiences in the world hands down.

But.....the numbers don't lie. A quick look at B&C entries tells the tale, and Wasatch County gets creamed by the southern units-Garfield, etc...

Both the Wasatch and the Manti produced some of the biggest bulls last year. Even the lowly Nebo produced a few that'd rival any unit last year...

We'll just have to agree to mostly agree. Got a feeling the canyon is gonna be a zoo tomorrow!

We'll need bbop to direct traffic!

ya be a good place to stay away from....that canyon is gonna be ugly....

thats why I said right now. On the whole, the San Juan, Pahvant, SW Desert, Dutton, Monroe kick the worlds butt. However, at this point in time, last year, this year, and i'm gonna say next year. I think the Snatch has them beat.

Its been tough huntin wherever you are and if the rumor of tag cuts is true it won't be long b4 the southern units are back in action. The snatch is unique in that it can have 500 tags on it and continue to produce quality bulls. It makes huntin hard sometimes but it can handle it.

The central region DWR laid out their recommendations for
the up coming RAC meetings,,,,,,,
Here's what was put out for the Wasatch and Nebo LE elk....

Wasatch Unit: Nearly 1,000 elk over objective. There will be almost 100 additional LE elk tags given out on the Wasatch. Last years average harvest age was 6.9. Goal is 5.5-6
Nebo Unit: 300 under objective. I didn't write down the average harvest age but it was slightly low. Expect a tag cut of about 13 tags. 131 in 2011 and there were 144 issued in 2010.

Only 100 more LE bull tags this year? :) I expected more.

You guys are really gonna fall outta yer chairs when the antlerless numbers come out!

First of all, who in the hell has time to watch all these elk? Do any of you guys have jobs? ;-) Second of all, you guys are really screwing with my odds of ever seeing another LE elk tag on the Wasatch. I can't believe you're giving out all this FREE information!:D

It's always an adventure!!!

Pro & the DWR can take a f'n Hike on their Age Objectives!

Ya,issue more LE Bull Tags on the Wasatch!

It wasn't a big enough Circus last year!

Why don't we just open all LE Units to Un-Lmited hunting & Hunt them year around!

I don't care if they're big or small!
If they throw lead I like em all!
:p

What ever happened to making the western portion of the unit more archery oriented? I thought it was a good idea.

Them StickFlippers pulling the 'ANY WEAPON' permits just can't resist using their Rifles!:D

I don't care if they're big or small!
If they throw lead I like em all!
:p

I agree that if a hardcore archer really thinks the "any weapon" dates are all that special then they should put in and USE a bow during the "any weapon" season. There, problem solved. :)

Hey goofy is that 100 additional rifle tags or are they spread across all three seasons? Just curious oh boy i like where this is headed another archer vs. rifle tissy! Personally I think that the archers can shove it. each season has its perks and let downs.

I'm not too familiar with other units but on the snatch the rut means ##### when it comes to the really big bulls. In my opinion again, the archers have the best opportunity at the biggest bulls. It's the most difficult hunt to kill something but I see bigger bulls at that time of the year.

I see the same thing on the wasatch. I generally see the best bulls in late August early September, and then again mid to late October.

I've said this for umpteen years, but in general rut hunts are over rated. There's going to be a magical rut fest at some point and generally it seems to take place before the anyweapon hunts or after-sometimes much later. It's anybodys guess from year to year.

I'd rather roll the dice on a late hunt and let my eyes and optics do the work.

Figured so goofy, probably 50 rifle and 25 each on arch and muzz. Ya know if i was any hand at math and wanted to clear the bonus point butt plug, i'd dump a whole buttload of arch and muzz tags out there.

If i remember correctly, you can issue ten times the arch tags compared to rifle and get the same kill rate.

Example

10 rifle tags=9 dead bulls state makes $3800 on tag fees or so??
100 Archer tags=10 dead bulls State makes $38,000 tag fees.....hmmmm
60 muzz tags=10 dead bulls State makes rougly $18,000

So maybe i'm a moron, well no probably i'm a moron, but it seems to me that you could issue a whole butt load more tags and kill the same amount of elk????

There will be over 600 LE tags spread over cwmu's archery mz and rifle this fall so if you do draw you will have plenty of company. Also there will be 1000 cow elk tags this fall and winter so get it while the gettins good.
Now I am no mathematician but my crude math says 1 12 year old bull takes 6 6 year olds to get the average down to 6.8 to get to a 5.5-6 year ave. most of the bulls killed will have to be under 6 years. So yeah the Wasatch will always have some great bulls on it but it is not a trophy unit now and certainly wont be when it gets to age objective. The bad thing (or maybe good as far as oppurtunity goes) is the more big mature bulls that get killed this fall the more tags next year.
I am not sayin the tag numbers are bad but I am worried about the cow tags, without a doubt there are not nearly as many elk on the south end of the unit as has been in the past(hobble creek, diamond fork, sheep creek) not sure about the rest of the unit. I know the division is worried about the high elk #'s in heber valley.
