Muzzy hunt for my wife.

My wife has 6 points now for elk in CO. She did not put in for a tag this year and got another point. She really wants to go on an elk hunt and the warmer the weather the better, so we are thinking a muzzleloader hunt. Maybe next year or the year after but are wondering what unit. I live in ND and have no way of scouting. I would like it to be a DIY hunt, she would prefer guided in a cushy lodge, but we probably can't afford that. She has never shot an elk before and honestly don't think she cares if it's a cow or a bull, she just wants to hunt in the mountains once in her life.
Is she close to drawing an average unit, or should we just keep getting points for a while?
Thanks all.

Here she is with her first bear taken this past fall.

Yes, she has plenty of points to draw a good, early season hunt - either archery or muzzy. Check out the stats page on the DOW website and you can find out what units she can draw. One thing to note though - if you're looking at the "Preference Points Required" report, that is the MINIMUM number of points it took to draw. I would figure at least one more than that report shows.

I would suggest cashing in those points sooner. There are some good hunts that require 3-6 points to draw. Once you get above that, you're kind of in no man's land until you reach those high-demand 15-20 point units.

If she talks you into a guided hunt, my recommendation would be Winterhawk Outfitters. It's a true, wilderness hunt for that spectacular mountain experience. But their camps are also top-notch and comfortable. I think their muzzy hunt requires 4 points. I'm sure others here can also give recommendations. If you do decide to go outfitted, do LOTS of research, ask questions and always ask for (RECENT!) references.

The CDOW website has lots of other resources if you go DIY. I would definitely take advantage of those.

Thanks Sparky27. I will talk to her about getting serious about it for next year. :) I have been on a couple DIY archery hunts in OTC units and we could probably go back to those same areas. It just didn't seem like they were all that great and had a lot of hunters from what I heard during muzzy.
Thanks again for the input.
