Colorado Unit 10 Early Rifle

I'm thinking about buying a LO tag for this hunt. No points in jeopardy here.......only $$$$.

However, I've read a great deal on the net plus talked to quite a few hunters that say that bull trophy quality has gone downhill. I now hear that a 280-320 bull is what I should only expect from the public lands there. There are bigger bulls on private. But since CDOW has issued more tags in recent years, the average 6 x 6 bull is only about 300" and that is what I should expect form BLM land. Only an outside chance at a 320" bull after hunting hard for days with an outfitter and a looooooooooong shot at any bull of 340" size from public. This ain't Arizona......so bulls just don't have the genetics to grow a 330+ rack even on a wet year in unit 10.

Any agreement or disagreement on these opinions here?

If you are getting a PLO tag, hunting good pvt land, and going guided you should be able to do better than a 320 bull. If not then you need a different guide. Tons of bulls in the range you mention, you just need to be patient, look over a bunch, and pass on a lot of smaller bulls.

Id argue with you all day if you don't think you can't kill a bull over 320 in 10... I ve seen plenty of 320 plus in 10 and I've helped kill them. All of them on public land to boot. If I could ever pull a unit 10 tag id be pretty damn confident I could kill a 330-340. But that being said.. I think I spend a little more time down there than most that would say 300 inch bull is what you should expect. I sure haven't been down there with someone who's shot smaller than a 320 bull.. just my .02

The word on the net could be going for or against depends on who is doing the writing and what they are trying to do, Push you away from "their" area or just being a nice guy and being helpful and posting up what they know or was told and giving you good infor.
IMO I believe more are trying to get less people in the draw for that area because they or friends are trying to draw that area.
I know it I had Max points I would be in the draw trying to draw unit 10 as first choice, But hell I don't know a thing about the unit for what my 2 cents is worth. LOL

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

Howdy Gator. No kidding? People can't be trusted on the net any more? People are actually this selfish in our society? Hunters on the net will actually do this?? I'm aghast at this behavior and consequently disenchanted with hunting as a hobby. Think I'll take up model railroading for a hobby. That is.......after I find the time to respond to the dozens of PM's I have here seeking honesty and competence and decency."

""If you get the tag How much time will you have?""

Goooood question. Three weeks if necessary. And this includes plenty of time before October 1.

Whiskey man... havent you already had a LO tag in the NW corner? Im not sure why you need advice on it when you've seemly already hunted it and taken a bull. I can tell you the quality hasnt changed much since 09 or whenever you had the tag last. If you honestly have 3 weeks to scout our hunt you should be able to turn up a good bull no problem. Im not shooting BSing you... but you can take my information for what its worth.

Hey ColoBoy,

I agree with ya.

Don't necessarily need advice.....just seeking some input from others who have firsthand knowledge of their own or others' experiences here in recent years. I'm always open to learning more about a unit. I try to weigh all input when making a hunting decision. Sometimes I do it correctly, and sometimes I don't. But that's life.

This is another unit that I've heard the whole, entire gamut of information on. Some say expect nothing more than 310 at best.........and some say what you just said.

Just seeking additional input CB. That's all. All SINCERE info is welcomed by me.

Im not sure who says except a 310 kinda bull.. the only guys who shoot those kinda of bulls are guys whom are trigger happy early in the hunt or guys who don't want to go home empty on the last. If you're much of an elk hunter, and can judge bulls and put the time in scouting and exploring there is no reason you shouldnt be able to ATLEAST walk away with a 330 type of bull. Im not blowing smoke out my ass here. I spend over 40 combined days in units 2 and 10 from july through december and I will stand behind my word that if you put the money down you will not disappointed in what you get. If you need reassurance I can send you pictures of two bulls ive been watching in 10 that are over the 350 mark..

Gotta say I'm curious why you would spend the money on a lo tag when you can shoot that same size bull in an otc unit?

Ahhhhhh....the quality of the overall experience. There's more to a hunt than just the end result. Very few hunters, no concurrent deer or cow hunters, peak of the rut for wild crazy bulls, beautiful high desert open scenic bull country. Hunting undisturbed bulls, great weather. If I had to spend my precious vacation in the pumpkin patch......I would shoot somebody. Not to mention that I am acquainted with a couple of wild babes that live in Rangely...........

All their boyfriends and hubbies are out at huntn' camp too at that time, so the girls must play too and you be their fresh meat.

The Ace has good whiskey, good meat, and.........good meat.

Do you pay for "that" also? If you are the "great DIY hunter" you play yourself up as why dont you show your stuff in OTC units where a 330+ is a real accomplishment. Then you really have no advantage and it will truly show your prowess.

What brought on your personal attack and hijack of this thread, Romulus?? Have I done something to you? You don't know anything about me, but I now know something about you.

Envy is hard for many hunters to deal with. Your very green with it. About as green as my large wad of cash is, aren't you?

A wad of cash never seems to possess humility.

Guys wait 20 years or more to draw this tag, you come on the web and brag about how you are "deserving" of the hunt soley because of your net worth, and then you accuse of others of envy. Get a life with sense of humility, and buy your "intelligence" since you can afford it...

20 years of waiting is worth way more than a pocket full of cash in my book, you can't make more time.

No envy here, I go on a good hunt every year, and have 14 years worth of elk points, which government polcicy allows to be trumped by your cash in hand.

You guys crack me up. A guy asks a simple question, and he gets bashed for having the coin to go on a hunt. I'd be willing to bet he worked hard to get where he is in life.

You guys may not like Whiskey, but I can tell you he is a straight shooter. He and I swapped some hunt intel last year, and what he gave me for Colorado unit 21 was spot on.

WiskeyMan if you hunted unit 10 in 09 there were plenty of big bulls.
Mine went 380" and I left a bigger one up there.

I would think that if you can get a tag and have three weeks for scouting and hunting you should have a great time and do well. I spoke with a guy a few years ago that drew and killed a bull, reasonable nice (over 320) but said he saw larger, his buddy was on the spotter/binos and told him to shoot. Stuff happens. Good luck if you get to go.

You enjoy buying diapers, soccer clothes, college educations, pizza, and beer......along with yer trailer full of quads. Not to mention that non-working creature you call yer wife. My sacrificial cash trumps alllll those things as I have to find nookie outside my home. Never said I was deserving.....or that I bought intel (only a LO tag). I'm just more successful at adult life than most of you crybaby wussey whiners. That's why I have mucho more excitement in the fall.

And yer envy is indeed apparent and factual and is also mandatory for you to continue your registration here on LittleWeinersClub.com.

The obsession for big bone and using gang-hunting, trail-cams, 1000-yard rifles, quads, chute-planes, and feeders have been the end of trophy hunting. Not the number of LO tags......some of which have been purchased by persons who actually worked hard for their $$$ and are actually TRUE hunters who don't use these cowardly tactics in order to cheat to whack a biggun but simply use their hard-earned dollars to circumvent the draw odds which are polluted by City dudes who can't find their own ##### much less a quality animal while wasting a quality unit hard-to-draw tag.

Seen it my whole, entire life.

LAST EDITED ON May-01-11 AT 10:27AM (MST)[p]Whiskey man Im gonna have to check out littleweiners.com or whatever you call it... sounds real interesting. But seriously... dude just stop while you're ahead. Go buy the damn land owner tag and whack a nice bull. You already seem to know the unit well and have killed a nice bull there, I have no idea why you needed to ask for help. The quality of the unit is still there and always will be. Good for you, you've been able to make a good chunk of money in your lifetime, so has my father.. but be's not a complete prick and has been married to my mom for 30 years and always supported everything my brother and I do financially. Whether it be hunting, fishing, coaching our baseball and wrestling teams, hauling us to rodeos or motocross races. He hasn't bought a LO tag in his lifetime and has indeed waited many years for some quality tags in Co. The mans taught me everything I know and I've been blessed to have some one like him introduce me to the outdoors at a young age. There's more to life than being a single man that can spend all his money on hunting....
