Just got the age back on my bull. 7 years old, no field pictures, have some after picutes I will post up with some help.

Add it to the thread called elk tooth data/ Utah down a little lower in this forum too. Its cool to see all the bulls and ages. Can't wait to see him!

May have to email it to someone. He is a big 5x5 or weak six if you want to call him that. It was a tough hunt as a NR. It took ten days not the biggest bull I saw, but I was starting to go looney tunes.Only one day blow 90 degrees. Lost my knife and bullets on the trek to get him. I am very happy with him though.

Here ya go.....

Well I had help, onedry boot and horney man. Hornyman hunted 4 days with me. I spiked out 3 nights solo. On day 7 I found this bull. I had dropped into a canyon when I spotted him about a mile above me. I was beat up by this time and really wasn't think straight. I passed my 4 wheeler headed up the ridge so I dropped my day pack and headed up the ridge. First 3 shots I screwed up the range with my range finder.I continue and go to about 375 yards. My first shot behind the shoulder he dropped, so I started looking for my brass, I looked up and the bull is moving out. I hit him 2 more times. I the scramble I lost my ammo belt holder and my knife. I found my bull and had no knife.

I carry razor blades for caping, ended up getting one hind quarter off, and one shoulder, and took the backstraps.I placed the meat under a tree on a rock. I cut the head off. I got back to my 4 wheeler at 1 a.m. with the head. Coming off the mountain I saw hunters wiht flashlights coming up the ridge beside me. I got up in the morning and boned him out in two different packs and leep frogged them down the mountain. I did leave a note on my neighbors camp to let them know where I would be. Wildhorse guy showed up and carried a pack out for me. Tough hunt very rewarding. Not the biggest bull on the hill but I am very proud. JB

Im glad you had a good hunt and were able to put a tag on him! That mountian is a nasty sucker and you earned him. congrats!

ODB,

I am not one to bad mouth another state, I was thankful for the tag.I consider myself pretty hardcore hunter, but there were so many factors out of my hands. Way too many hunters and helpers. I have hunted most Western states and have never in my life witnessed so many bad acts by slob hunters, it really was sad. I think I told you about a few. I did meet some nice folks as well. Thanks for your help. That is just my opinion on my hunt. JB

JB,
That bull is awesome......yes, the conditions were bad and yes, there were probably too many people out there. The tag situation here in Utah has made these hunts the way they are(once-in-a-lifetime). Do you have another adventure planned for this year? If nothing else, you have a LOT of memories.....

Thanks for the positive feed back. I don't want to come across as an ungrateful NR, I am not. It just wasn't what I expected. This year staying in Oregon points only everywhere else. Good luck on the draws. JB

Interesting comments, I can see if there are too many tags on a smaller unit a LE hunt becoming a zoo. I have never hunted on the West Desert, so I really don't know how it is out there. I have seen somewhat similar situations occur on other smaller Utah LE units. I have also been on bigger units and hardly saw another person while hunting a LE hunt. I can see where a crowded hunt would definitely make a hunt experience not as fun or as expected...

Im pretty sure I have pics of your bull in velvet, I will see if I can find them.
From what I saw last year out there, it was not great hunting conditions. I helped a friend on the muzz hunt and in two days out there I saw more rattlesnakes then bull elk. Luckily we found a good one and he smoked him opening mourning but we hunt a long ways from the zoo. There are still some big old bulls out there but there not coming out when its 95+ degrees.

Definitely a tough hunt out there last year. The heat was crazy and if I recall, all but one day was bright, sunny and warm during the rifle hunt. Bulls being out 15 minutes in the morning and 15 at night makes for a tough hunt.

Congratulations for connecting. It was definitely a bigger feat than most years to put a bull on the ground.

Johnny boy you earned that bull!!!

It was extremly tough last year and yes way tooooo many tags and Utards. Being a Utard myself I can say it but it was really bad. Im embarassed.

Of all the years chasing deer and watching elk, last year was the worse. Im afraid it will be a trend. Like one dry boot said, there are still some nasty old bulls on that mtn. As hard of a Mtn as it is there will always be old bulls on it. However I do think there are too many tags for the unti.

You where also having to deal with all of the spike hunters as well. I dont think they where all LE hunters. I am gulity ,I was out there with my daughter on the archery hunt. But we stayed on private ground for the whole hunt. Well except for driving up and down the main road. :)
It was really hot out there this year.

Well from the sounds of all the ages coming in, it looks as if I got a nice management bull out of the way. Genetically he was weak.To be honest I dont know if I could have hunted the last 2 days of the season I was that beat up. His first mass measurement was right at 11". Not that it matters, his green gross was 345 for what it is worth. JB

Say all you want about "management" and "weak genetics", but he's a darn nice bull in my book! It's too bad you had the problems you mentioned, but hey! You did it all on your own and got er done in some tough conditions. Good for you and congratulations!!!

Topgun,
yeah I was half kidding with that comment.Very proud, wish I could have shared the success with someone, good times. I learned a good deal about myself being out there in the tough conditions. JB

Well if you look at the top post 2010 Utah elk you can see the hike I put in to get to my bull. It was a long hike on day 7 of the hunting season for me.JB

He looks great there at your house. I was visiting with one of my co-workers last week about your adventure coming off of Rocky with your elk on the wheeler and I am still not sure how you made it off of there, maybe not being able to see due to darkness made it easier.

Congrats again and I appreciate the fact that my wife shot hers where we could drive to it. You definately earned yours and thanks for the opportunity to experience a small portion (three hours) of your hunt on Rocky.

good looking Bull, Hunt sounds like it was a Great Hard hunt, and a few buds to help you get the right frame of mind to keep hunting and a good guy to help pack out.
