LAST EDITED ON Apr-18-11 AT 07:42AM (MST)[p]hoochie mama is an easy to use, but an effective call to.

Ditto kzkammo comment, as that's the cow calls my buddy and I use with very good success every year.

I'm personally not a big of the hoochie. I just don't think it sounds that good and I don't feel you control it as much as you can a mouth call. I'm a big fan of of diaphrams because they are versitle in the fact I can make so many different pitches of cow calls with them. While also being able to bugle with them through a grunt tube. As far as mouth calls go I'm a big fan of the primos hyper lip single, the hot lips double. My all time favorite is the carlton fighting cow call. I'm not a big fan of sceerys I find them tough to use at time.

i love the hootchie mama. i got a little one last fal it's a calf call i think. i used it the first time and called in a coyote !

You will need more than one. I like to have a hoochie mamma, primos hyper lip double and single and usually one or two other like the Wayne Carlton or whatever his name is. I have found that some sound better than others at certain times. Mix it up, if one is not working, go to the next call...

Some calls work better in close while others are louder and are better at locating bulls.

I have tried many and keep going back to the primos hyper lip single and double. They have proved to me far better than any other call.
Last spring/summer I finally decided to "make" the diaphram calls work for me. Every day to and from work (30 minutes each way) I practiced my cow calls with the diaphram. I spent a ton of money buying all kinds of different ones from different companys. I ended up settling on 5 or 6 different styles. When september came I made it my goal to use only those.
What a WASTE of time and effort. The bulls would not answer them. I even experimented with them back and forth with the hyper lips. Every time I got them bugling with the hyper's and then went back to the diaphrams they shut up. I tried using the diaphrams first and they wouldn't start talking, so I would switch to the hypers and they would instantly answer.

I know they work for some but I hate them and would not use them if it ment a promotion for $100k/year!
I don't buy the reason for hands free use when they are in range either. I can make a basic cow call with my own sounds to stop them for a shot without any assistance from a call.

I just won a Baby Hootchie call on another site and it will be fun to try that one this Fall along with the other ones. I just can't use those mouth calls, whether it's calling elk or for Spring turkey hunting either. I have a bunch of different calls for turkey hunting too and none are mouth calls.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-18-11 AT 03:37PM (MST)[p]>why do u need to use
>a call on a guided
>hunt that is part of
>what u are paying the
>guide to do ????

Ya I was about to say... I've never had to guide an archery hunt where I've had a client call with me. What you find is; Your guide will position you about 30 to 50 yards ahead of him and begin calling behind you. The tactic behind this is bull's typically seem to hang up outside of 50 yards from the caller, typically because they don't see anything, but its not always the case. But from my experience it happens quite often with mature bulls. So basically what the guide is trying to do is position you in front of him to intercept the bull while he's still coming strong, or closer to him as he hangs up and becomes confused with the situation. So it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense to be calling out in front of him. If you're interested in learning certainly go out and purchase a couple calls and dink around with them. But the absolute best way I found to learn to call elk is to listen to other elk and try to mimic those sounds. Not every cow sounds the same. Elk are very vocal creatures as most know and cows have many different mews and whines that you need to be familiar with to be a consistently effective caller. Also, talk to your guide for a few tips and tactics he most likely will know a thing or two about calling elk hopefully.

im just wanting to have something with me incase we get seperated or i need to stop one to take the shoot. I was thinking the same thing when i read the list of items i needed to bring so i thought i need to learn at least.

Thanks all Rich

I've found the best way to stop a bull right before you shoot is either have a diaphram in your mouth ready to go. Or just make a mew with your voice. It doeesnt have to sound pretty to get em to stop and when you're at full draw you don't have time to reach for a hoochie or other sort of call.

Yeah, I agree with you guys that mention that a guide wouldn't want his hunter calling. It could actually HURT your hunt!

The Hoochie Mama is for hunters that don't have time or interest in mastering better calls. It will occasionally call in a bull but everybody has one and it has become less effective.

I agree that the Hyper Lip is a great call when blown properly. I like the single.
Mouth calls are only effective if a guy really knows how to run them- very few people really do.

I recently purchased Steve Chappell's "Matriarch" Open Reed call. It sounds amazing and I can't wait to use it this fall!
Also bought a couple of his mouth diaphragms. They sound great and are easy to blow too. http://chappellguideservice.com/elk_calls___products
Cool video on there of some big bulls being called in with these calls!

You might check out some elk hunting videos. You don't need to "elk call" to stop a bull for a shot. A deer grunt with your voice works every time. Saw it on the Primos videos and then on Chappell's Extreme Bulls so I tried it. Believe me, it works.

Good luck on your hunt. Save your calling for your DIY hunts and practicing. Keep your call in your pocket on this hunt unless you get lost IMO, Your guide will love you for that. :)

I think the primos hyper lip is one of the best sounding calls out there and have called in alot of bulls with it.
Im not a fan of the push calls that make the same squeek every time.

Let your guide call for you, if he screws up...well better him than you.

I can tell you this, you don't want to give up your location to the bull, if you do, you will be searching for another and will have a missed opportunity.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-21-11 AT 05:36PM (MST)[p]I use:
#1 Sceery Ace-3 (hyper cow in heat)
#2 Mossback Widowmaker
#3 Primos Hyperlip double

Have done very well with them. I also agree let your guide do it! He should know what he is doing.

I have tried a bunch and here is my list. #1 you will need some time to master, but very effective in my experience. The rest are all fairly easy to blow but when you are the one doing the shooting I would simply mew with your mouth or make a deer grunt to stop'em.

#1 - Diaphram (must have - I prefer Bugling Bull Gamecalls)
#2 - Mossback Widowmaker - Awesome nasally tone
#3 - Primos Hyperlip Single and Double - Old Faithfulls
#4 - Bugling Bull Game Calls Model #M4 - Matriarch Cow/Calf Call (Steve Chappell Signature Series) - Great Sound and trying for the first time this year.

Get practicing now if you plan on participating in the calling. I disagree on letting the guide do it all, that is if, and only if you spend the time to learn how to use one properly and practice like crazy.

That is part of the fun of the hunt!

Otherwise, let your guide do the talking and just be prepared to stop'em when you need to.

Just my $0.02

Either way I am sure you will have a ball!

Elk definitely respond better to different calls in different areas and sometimes it varies from year to year. I've had the most success with the Hyper Hot and then with a diaphram call. I've had pretty good luck with the Carlton Fight'n Cow Call as well. I've friend who exclusively uses the Carlton and can get bulls bugling June through December. The guy could call a bull out of your living room. The sounds he made sounded the same to me as the ones I made. Apparently the elk could hear a difference.

I tried the Hoochie Mama for a couple of years and never had an elk respond to it (vocally anyway; there probably was--as in many cases--the odd silent one come in I was never aware of). No question that it has worked wonders for some, but not myself or some of the others in this area.
