Lets do something about deer in Utah

Lets do something.

We went deer hunting in south eastern Utah where we encountered more lion and dog tacks then deer. The few deer tracks that we did cut were followed by coyote or lion.

The state of deer in Utah is completely negligent on the part of the fish and game in letting it get to this point.

Before everybody comes back just saying that I am just griping about an unsuccessful hunt we were in good places with plenty of feed and water. The wild horses we doing just fine except no colts on them (lions if I had my guess)

What I think needs to be done take it of leave it but something needs to be done.

1st Break up the regions into improvement sections and put a comity over each section.
- The sections need to be small so improvements can be recognized and maintained

2nd Grantee anyone who volunteers 100 hours of serves to a region a tag. If they don't volunteer put them into the general draw.

3rd I don't like it but cut the number of tags on deer, and start kill lions and coyotes.
Count each coyote as 10 hours of serves and each lion as 50 hours.

I agree that something needs to be done. In the Three days I could get off of worked saw close to a hundred Elk and maybe 50 Deer. I agree lower the number of tags or something. I guess money is what it's all about.

Yep, kill all of the lions, that will fix all of the problems. Just so ya know, they have been pounding the lion populations with little or no effect so far on recovering deer populations.

When all of the lions are gone, the only place to look will be in the mirror.

Cut the tags in half and micro manage like the rest of the western states. I for one could handle only hunting deer every 2nd or 3rd year if it would help the population and the quality of the hunt.

Something has to be eating them because I am sure not.

I do think they have started on the lions but, but just a start.

As far as micro manage like the rest of the western states, some management is better then what we are doing now.

go to predator masters .com and tell them where you could use some predator control. alot of the people there are from utah and others will travel long distances for a good weekend of calling.
they might take you with them and then you to will catch the addiction.
is there a coyote callers annonamous anywhere i think i need help.
i went to one area to bowhunt deer and every time i started stalking up on a buck i'd see a coyote. i'd forget the deer and try the coyotes. i'd love to get some with my bow. at the end of the day i was at coyotes 9 me 0.
opening day of rifle season i got even me 4 coyotes 5.
i know that there were 8 coyotes in that one spot and now there is only 4. i need to get back after them but the rabbit population is insain. i went out with my 22 on sunday at 3:00pm and shot over 80 jack rabbits befor dark.
the deer there are starving to death due to rabbits eating every blade of grass. i think i'll leave the coyotes alone and shoot rabbits they are doing more damage then the coyotes right now. i'll still take any coyotes that get into the sheep or i see hunting deer.

allhunts!!!

YOU PICK THE DAY & I'D LIKE TO SEE HOW MANY LION TRACKS YOU CAN SHOW ME IN THE N.E. REGION IN A WEEK!!!

THEY'VE POUNDED THEM FOR SEVERAL YEARS!!!

USE TO BE 3 HOUNDSMEN IN THE BASIN!!!

NOW EVERY OTHER PICK-UP HAS A DOG BOX IN THE BACK & THEY ALL CLAIM TO BE VETERANS!!!

I GET A KICK OUT PEOPLE LIKE YOURSELF CLAIMING ALL THIS LION DAMAGE!!!

I'LL GUARANDAMNTEE YOU YOU'D BETTER TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT THE COYOTE PROBLEM IN THIS STATE!!!

THE BIGGEST BIG GAME PREDATOR THERE IS ARE THESE LOWLIFE POACHERS,ITS OUT OF HAND,WAY OUT OF HAND,I NEVER HEAR MANY PEOPLE BITTCHING ABOUT THE LOWLIFE SCUM OF THE EARTH POACHERS THOUGH!!!

THE ONLY bobcat KNOWING LIONS WILL EAT,BUT WHEN THE DEER HERD IS DECIMATED JUST REMEMBER ONE FRICKEN THING,IT WASN'T THE LION ALONE!!!

I am not here to only complain about lions although I do think they play a significant role in deer populations in the state.

I haven't spent much time in the N.E section on the state, but the south S.E. has plenty if you want to get some of them.

As far as POACHERS go I couldn't agree with you more. I know that poaching is a big problem with game in the state, and that it is a huge contributing factor in the loss of game. But as long as poacher gets a slap on the wrist, and have almost no chance of getting caught, where is the deterrent.

And as far as calming lion damage I don't have to claim, there is hardly a time we go out we cut tracks or find a lion kill, in one area we found 3 in one day. (they don't eat grass)

I know it isn't lion, coyote, or poachers alone that have the deer in Utah where they are now. When it comes right down to it is pore management and people sitting around doing nothing about it. That is why I said lets get more people out in the field improving what ever it takes.

I at least offered a suggestion I would be interested in hearing yours

If you need to see what lions will do to your game herds just look to Oregon. in 1994 a ban on hunting lions with dogs was put in place and our herds have gone down hill ever since. I'm not saying it's all lions , the yotes are a huge problem and poachers along with ODFW have all helped wipe the deer out. first the deer went and now elk numbers are falling and in some places fast. Most of the guys I grew up with wont even apply for a deer tag anymore the deer hunting is so bad, when I do get a tag after knowing the way it used to be it's more depressing than not going at all so I think they're right. while hunting in Colorado last year the locals told me if anyone cuts a lion track in their area a dog is on it right away and guess what they have deer, lots of deer. at least in Utah you still have a chance since you can use dogs, take advantage of it.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't the UDWR propose a plan to split the state into 25 different units for general Deer? Maybe I am wrong but if that were the proposal today then I would vote yes in a heart beat. Sale more tags for the area's that the population can sustain the number of tags. Also maybe we should set aside some public lowlands as national forest so that our deer heards don't have so much competition with homebuilders for their winter range. Are growing Elk populations a problem? I would have no problem not hunting deer for three or four years to help the population rebound. I already only hunt deer in Utah every other year as a resident. I guess we could talk ourselves to death about this subject. Is joining a group like the Mule Deer Foundation going to Help? As the average Joe citizens what can we do?
