What do you think about Beaver bow hunt

Ok i just wondering if any of you have hunted this hunt or have spent any time on the unit in the early season archery

It's steep and rugged. Heavily timbered. It also has areas lower with cedar trees and sage brush. How many points do you have?

Beaver has the potential for a giant on any year or any weapon, scouting is critical, lace up your danners and have fun.

Beaver Unit is not a slam dunk. They are issuing less tags on the Beaver this year. I think the Archery success was around 25%. I helped a friend in the early rifle and have hunted it 3 times with friends of family. Quality has gone down hill. Still a good unit. The fires last year contributed to a lot of hunting pressure with areas you could hunt. Elk likly wont be very vocal. I talked with two hard core archery hunters. They scouted prior to the hunt, they hunted every day. Passes on some 300 class bulls. Didn't punch their tags. Did have a lot of fun. Good luck.

Steep and rugged. Never bow hunted it myself, but have heard that it can be a hard hunt as others with more experience have mentioned. Good luck and report back on how it went if you get a tag.

Helped a friend out as well on the Beaver. Loved the unit. Steep, rugged, deep canyons- Very humbling place, but big bulls. Talk to DavTaiv- send him a pm. He knows the unit very well.
Also, you can watch a video that I posted in the "hunt clips" section that is from the Beaver unit, titled "Hapless Hunt #1."

We ended up passing on too many good bulls hoping to get the monster, and ended up shooting at smaller ones the last couple days. Tag Soup is what we took home.

I would rather come home eating tag soup then the regret of shooting something that i would be disappointed with

i know its not likely that i will get a chance at a true giant
but will give it my all...

My goal as of right now (if i draw of course) 340 is that doable
or do you think i'm up in the night

Billy,

Im not an archery expert. I have shot 8 elk with a bow. I have hunted Beaver unit a few times, and talked with quite a few hunters. I would say if you are hard core archer you have about a 50% chance of shooting a bull 300 class or better. 5-10% of shooting a 340 class bull or better. Remember, Archery hunters as a rule are hard core. They scout and practice a lot. They are dedicated. The success rate of killing anything is about 25% on the Beaver. I know two groups of archery hunters last year. One group didn't get in range of a 6 point bull. The other group passed on some 300 class bulls, and saw a couple 330-340 type bulls, but didn't work out. Both groups had tag soup. Not trying to be pestimistic. They had a lot of fun. Good luck.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-26-11 AT 12:02PM (MST)[p]To tell you the truth i know that the odds are not in my favor to
kill a giant bull (by giant i mean 350 plus) but is it really worth waiting 5 to 10 years to draw a rifle tag? I don't think so
cuz who knows what the DWR will do to the elk herds..
To me its not really about the kill but the chase as long as I get to chase a big bull I will say its a great hunt

Hope i draw but there is no guarantee will let you guys no the end of may
Thanks again Billy

Billy,

My opinion early rifle hunters chance to kill a 350 plus bull if they are good hard hunters, I would guess would be 30-40%. Guided hunters would be higher and if you had some local help and knew the area well, that may be higher. It's a great fun hunt. Not a slam dunk to shoot a 350+ bull however. I know a couple rifle hunters last year that had great hunts, had some friends who knew the unit pretty well helping and neither one shot bulls over 335. If you draw let us know how he hunt went. Good luck.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-27-11 AT 06:45PM (MST)[p]The Feelmore/Beaver area sounds like a fun place to hunt!

I've general archery deer and elk hunted the Beaver unit for many years. I will say the Beaver unit is a zoo during the archery hunt, but like most places if you get off the road a ways then you leave behind the majority of people.
The Beaver is also a popular camping place. Last year we were barely able to find a place to set up camp. Of course most people drag there trailers up there and leave them for weeks at a time but that's a whole different topic.
From what's I've found there are certain areas that tend to hold the elk. It's not like some units where nearly every canyon might hold elk.

Hunted the Beaver LE Archery last year with my brother. Good hunt if your willing to put in the work...saw two really nice bulls pushing the 350-360 class but could never get it to come together. Ended up eating tag soup but had a great time doing it. I would burn 9 points to do it again.

Ask Gooches guides they are the very best on the Beaver unit and they told me that the unit is on a decline. My friend shot a 390 bull (Bullmania) on the unit. year before last and went back last year and said he passed on three bulls from 330-360 in 9 days of hard hunting . Thats not good ....

Good Luck
Elk 2011

a lot of the area's up there are tough going in and coming out if you can find a packer to help get that Big bull out after you get him it's a good idea to have his number handy to call.
