Hey everybody, there is a good chance my wife will draw the archery La Sal elk tag this year.

I am not familiar with the area, we just got tired of waiting for San Juan and wanted to hunt. We picked La Sal because it looked like a nice place to spend some time in September.

Does anybody have any experience in that unit? I am just wondering what type of hunt can we expect.

Thanks for his number. I will give him a call and pick his brain.

Glad he killed a nice bull.

I archery hunted it last year and it was a tough hunt, I think there was only 3 successful archery hunters. I set my goals high and hunted hard and on the 2nd to last day of the hunt I ended up dropping my goals and shot a small 6x6. The hunt was fun and had a great time. But changing from the san juan unit to Lasal you dropped your expectations I hope as well.

We are just hoping to see some elk. She has never killed an animal with her bow, so a 300-330 bull would be an absolute monster.

I hope the rut works better with the archery hunt this year than it did for you guys last year. I heard it was really hot most of your hunt.

My wife did draw her La Sal archery tag. We are hoping to go on a weekend scouting trip in the next month or so. Will all the snow be gone by then?

I was fortunate enough to draw a rifle tag for La Sal, would also love to talk to your friend about the unit if your are okay with that.

Archer, I saw that you drew the la sal dolores triangle tag. I'm sure you are aware, but that is a small unit off the mountain north of the la sal, la sal mtns unit grizzly is talking about in this thread. It is a late migration hunt and a pretty different experience than the regular la sal mtns hunt. Good luck and have a great hunt! Nothing like hunting big bulls!

Thanks for the heads-up Andyman, yeah I knew they were separate units, but now that I read the previous thread, I see where I missed that they were talking about a different unit. I have heard that the La Sal DT is a hunt for the migratory elk from CO. I have some family that has been watching the unit closely for some time now, hopefully the long season will allow the weather to come in that I need. I am very interested to always learn more if you have more insight on the area.
