I have a client that is out in PA and REALLY wants to come west and hunt Elk. He would be AMAZINGLY happy with anything about 320" and wants to hunt with a rifle.

I live in AMAZING elk country...but can not find a tag for that cost....so my question to all the experts out there....where can I find a good elk hunt, with the chance to take a nice bull for the $4-5,000 price range I want to spend to get him on a bull??

Any ideas??

LAST EDITED ON Apr-29-11 AT 02:28PM (MST)[p]FEH, I am not sure but isn't some of the lower end LE units there in UT going for about that at the multiple banquets/auctions?
That doesn't include guiding but if you were taking him out he would probably have a better time.

You could probably find some elk vouchers/hunts in here in Colorado for a bull in that size range??? Not sure but maybe in around unit 40. There is lots of private land there and vouchers...

there are some decent CWMU units that may have a few tags left to buy. Youll just need to make some calls, you can find their names and numbers under the dwr site under the CWMU section. Good luck

I know of one kid who got an Oquirhh Mt tag for the rifle hunt for $1500 just a while back. The auctions work for the less desired tags.

There is NO WAY you can buy a decent CWMU permit for less than $8-10,000 now days!!

Todd....I will be calling you.

Unless he only wants to hunt your state, I would have him look at a landowner tag in Colorado or New Mexico. I think he would have a great chance at a pretty decent bull like you're talking about in that price range in either of those states.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-29-11 AT 08:21PM (MST)[p]I'd wager that if he was happy with a 320 then he'd be happy with a 290-300. There are Utah ranches around that sell trespass hunts during the Any Bull season for $3000-5000. Gotta do some leg work, but they are out there. I know of one that has put 300-350" bulls on the ground for a decade. They sell the trespass hunts for $4,500. Of course that is the exception, but there are others out there.

Utah prices are over-inflated and you can find better places in other states. What are Wyoming Commissioner's Tags selling for?

I know a ranch out between Craig, Colorado and Steamboat that he would get a 320 bull for that price range.

CWMU old woman plateau contact Mike Labrum
you can find his contact info in the utah proclamation.
thats about what he charges for a tag.
it is a diy unit but there are some guides for it and several locals that will help you out just to get out.!!!
if you need some help pm me i have been on that cwmu several times and it borders another cwmu that has some 350-370 bulls that wander on to the old woman every now and then.

Buy a landowner tag in new mexico and do your homework and get there a week before the opener to scout.I buy a muzzy landowner in unit 15 NM almost every year for about $4000,I killed a 330' bull last year and have seen a few 350' bulls every year I go.The last time I looked on the huntin fool website they still had three left for unit 15 and one for unit 17 which alot of people consider better than unit 15.Good luck.

Doctor D, Lets see some pics of the elk you guys have taken off of that cwmu.

Sorry no pics!maybe bigjohnT could get a picture of our friends bull on here they are both from st.george and the one is in mexico till next monday so i will see what i can do.
He has guided it several times and has pictures!
I have only bought and drew cow tags on the unit but have spent quite a bit of time on it (early-late) season and have seen some nice bulls.
Im not looking to guide anyone just trying to give the guy some info on a tag in his price range!!!

If he is willing to wait 2 years, he could draw wilderness in WY and go guided for about that.

Not that I would know if it's worth it. :)

If he was willing to pick up a bow i could get him a southwest dessert archery tag for that ! conservation tag !!!!! gone cheeeep !

well when my wife drew a tag 2 years ago for one of the "least desired" tags in the state i bought a conservation tag for less than 2,800 for the same area, She harvested a bull close to 340 and i tagged out on a mid 320 bull. I drew the same tag last year and in less than perfect conditions tagged a mid 340 bull. it can be done with just a little work.

Thanks a lot guys for all the replys and the PMs. I have been CRAZY busy with work the last week and will try to answer all the PMs as soon as I can.

From what it looks like there is a good opportunity for getting him out hunting this fall! Thanks everyone!
