Bura made it sound like I killed this buck (maybe because of my earlier post, it sounds like I did kill him.) I did not kill this one. I have a Carp(Muley) tag that starts this Friday.

Anyways on the last morning (Monday) I glassed up 4 bucks more than a mile as the crow flies from where we were at 7:00 AM. This buck was the 2nd biggest of the bunch. We planned a 2 mile stalk and hauled A$$ after them as soon as they fed over the ridge. We hoped the would feed in the canyon they went into until we got over there. At 8:15 we were crawling up the back side of the ridge opposite of the deer, we topped through the saddle and this buck was right there about 50 yards below and 100 yards left of where they all topped over. We could see him with naked eyes as he was standing there.
I did a quick 45 second scan for the other 3 bucks but could not see them. My dad said that this one would do, took a good rest off my backpack and flopped this sucker cross-canyon. We figured it was a 250-300 yard cross canyon shot(I need a range finder bad). Turns out the other bucks were way below us in the bottom and we couldn't see them from the saddle we topped over in. I figure the bigger buck was 100 inches or so, this one was 86. Not bad for a 2x3. 16 inch beams and heavy. I hunted 3 out of the 4 days in unit 33 and 36B helping out relatives, I only saw one bonafide buck bigger than this (the one he was with). I saw alot of thin white-horned 3 pointers that might score better than this buck but they were not "bigger". It was a tough hunt and the deer were not feeding in the afternoons like I thought they would. It was pretty much a morning hunt and then see no deer unless you kicked them out for the rest of the day. All you new coues hunters need to figure out how to cape and bone these bucks out, I carried this one whole, 2 miles back to the road and then hiked up to the truck and I am still sore as H3LL 2 days after the fact!! It was a good hunt, I wish would have had a whitetail tag, I need to kill a mulie(never killed one before) and plan on it next week, then back to serious deer hunting ;-)!!!

Thanks for the story, its great to get on here and try to re-live some of the excitement without having to pack the buck back like you did.... You are right, that buck has better than average beam length, hes a great buck........ Thanks, Allen......

Congrats to your Dad! Looks like you two had fun, that's what it's all about. Your buck is bigger than mine though! Guess mine will be more tender:D!

Good luck on your Mulie hunt and be careful.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-30-02 AT 11:57PM (MST)[p]We had lots of fun!!! That was the first coues buck he has ever shot with me around helping him. This buck would have been really big but he had bad genes. The area we killed him in is notorious for big 2 pointers. He is missing an eyegard and third point on his other side. The buck is heavily bladed on one side and massive as far as mass goes. 20 years ago my dad killed a giant 2 pointer not far from where we killed this one with 19 inch beams and 5 inch eyegaurds  It is funny how some areas will carry bucks for years and years with the same genes.

Good deal...I'm looking foward to hunting them in the future... maybe next year!!! Congrats on the deer...

Brett, the buck does have alot of mass. I am still learning how to judge, so I am thinking the buck grosses around 84. Am I close?????? Thanks again for the great story/pictures..... Allen......

My dad measured it, I didnt have a chance to put tape to it. he came up with 86 gross. He got 4 inch bases and 4 inch circumferences on it. It does hold its mass all the way out. He may have been "loose" taping it knowing him ;-). I figured on the hoof with a 45 second look it was 90, then we walked up and I saw the lack of a 3rd point on one side and no eyegaurd on the other. I would say 84-86 gross inches is a damned good estimate of the buck as is. Maybe I wil put a tape to it next week and tell exactly what the real score is. Good luck all

Congratulations to you and your dad on a fine buck. I'm new to this board and find it very interesting.
How old do you think he might be? I ask this question because my brother shot a similar large body buck a few years ago that was quite old (by the teeth). Our theory was that he was past his prime which accounted for the long wide beams and few points. His old buck also had a noticably wider spread at the base of the skull than the other dozen or so bucks we have tagged. Thanks everyone for your contributions to this board.

Bret,
Congratulations to you and your dad on a successful hunt! Doesn't look like there was a tree big enough around to hang him up and make the skinning/quartering easy. I saw a guy drag his young son's 95" deer off the top of the mountain near the Elkhorn in 36c a few years ago. Not much hair left and I'm sure the meat was well tenderized. I never considered shouldering the whole thing and hoofing it; always hiked back in with the packframe and alaskan bag to carry out the meat.
Have an enjoyable muley hunt.

He was up in one of the burns that tore up much of unit 33. He was stuffed full of green grass that they were eating. I think he was 3 and 1/2 half. His teeth were in good condition and so was the rest of him. I should have boned him out and gone to the truck for the pack frame or cut him in half and made 2 trips. I dont like to drag them because the meat gets all messed up. Anyways thanks guys and good luck.
