Wasatch Archery

I'll throw my name in as well. I am missing 795 from my bank account so I guess I drew. My 14 yr old daughter also drew an AZ late rifle bull tag so it will be a busy (and expensive! OUCH) fall.

I helped a friend with the wasatch archery in 2009 so I have spent a total of five days there. I will head down to scout around the end of July. If anyone has any ideas on areas to check out I would really appreciate it. I don't know how remote you can get in the wasatch, but I would love to backpack in somewhere as that is how I do most of my elk hunts in Oregon.

Are there areas that are rough or remote enough to no get much pressure?? If I don't find any other areas I will head to the spots we hunted in 09. I plan on taking the whole season off and just hope I will still be empoyed and married when I get back. I'll be by myslef for most of the hunt but may be able to get a friend or two to come down for the first week of Sept.

Good luck to everyone else that drew..

Look me up when you are heading down. I may be able to help a little. I had that tag last year.

You will not have a lot of luck finding remote country on the wasatch.

Nice.. I will be on that mountain most the summer as i drew that tag also. Should be a fun hunt i think. Southslope you get a bull last year?

Congrats and GOOD LUCK! You'll have a blast!

I'm not the biggest expert on the Wasatch (not even close) but I can tell you this: You can get into several areas that are too remote to day-hunt. Many places are ideal for a hardcore backpacker.
Did your friend get a bull? Were you with him when he did?

There are plenty of places to get back into remote areas on the wasatch, all you have to do to get away from most hunters is walk about 500 yards from the road.
I will be spending a lot of time up there this fall deer hunting with my bow. Look me up when your down, it would be fun to go out and maybe see some elk.

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

I really appreciate the help everyone. I will definately let you guys know when I head down.

Yes my friend did get a bull on the fifth day of our hunt. I was leaving the next day and he would have been on his own for the next two weeks, so we were both pumped for him to get one on the day before I left. We did a lot of glassing and saw two bulls bigger than his. We also saw two bulls just a little smaller but very close in size as well as a few smaller bulls. All in five days. In fact we saw 12 bulls and 11 cows during our hunt. We chased his bull towards a wallow we had sat a few times. We checked a trail camera that was set up over the wallow and saw he beat us there by about 30 minutes. We set up over the water in hopes he would come back. A couple hours later I started calling a little and got a weak answer from below the wallow. About a hour later he slipped in below the wallow and created a new wallow about 80 yards downhill from us. We could just get glimpses of his antlers as he wallowed for about 20 minutes. I gave a few sporadic cow calls as he was wallowing. As soon as he was done he came in right to us. I stopped him when he was 17 yards from my buddy and he made a perfect shot.

The worse part about it was that I was there to call and film the whole hunt. I watched this entire episode through the viewfinder on my camera. After the shot I realized I never hit record!! I thought my buddy was going to kill me but fortunatley he was too pumped to get his first bull to be mad. I have since lost my job as our cameraman!!

OK one more time..

Can anyone recommend a good map to start with? Is the Uinta-wasatch-Cache National forest map a good one?
