Filmore Oak Creek South (late)

I drew this tag this year and I'm looking forward to the hunt but was hoping for some advice/help on the unit. My 4th child is due in July so I won't have as much time to spend in the field as I'd like to. I don't know the unit at all so any help where to begin would be appreciated.

This is a very tough area with few elk now. For the late hunt the southern boundry area is usually best north of black rock road. The elk are usually gnot there during summer or early hunt but start moving in around the start of the rut in mid september. Find the water and you will locate elk. Water holes and guzzlers are few out there so locating the water holes will be a big advantage.

Don't waste your time up oak city canyon, no elk up there. I live in oak city and the elk don't hang out up there. A 300 bull is a huge bull on the unit. They are managing it for average harvest of 3 year olds. They used to have some good bulls, but 4-5 years ago opened alot of the area for general season and slaughtered the herd. They haven't come back and most people are taking 5 and small 6 points in the 3-4 year old range. The spike hunters killed lots of spikes the first year 2 years ago and that will really reduce mature bulls the next few years. Good luck.

Thanks for the information. I spoke to the wildlife biologist over that region as well and he gave very similar advice to yours, to hunt the southern end of the region and specifically north of black rock road. He also stated that there are few elk in the unit but if you had time and you were patient, you could find a decent bull, especially if the weather cooperated. The guy was very helpful and spent over an hour with me on the phone going over different areas and he was very specific on where to look. I was surprised but very appreciative of the time he took with me to make sure all my questions were answered.

Again, I appreciate your help and suggestions. I'd be thrilled to pull a bull close to 300 out of there, but I'm sure that's a long shot...hopefully luck will be on my side!

The DWR office gave me his cell phone number and I don't feel comfortable releasing that type of information on a public forum and being a new member to this forum I'm not sure how to send a personal message (PM) yet or I would, but you can call the regional DWR office and let them know the tag your dad drew and that you have questions about the unit. They were very cordial and willing to help.
