Cody is 14, and even though I am an avid mule deer hunter, his interest has always been elk. he drew 1 of utahs youth elk tags this year. he is a hiker and will put the effort in to get a shot at a bull, but myself not being an elk hunter I have no idea where to start looking. it appears he is able to hunt any of the general zones. he would greatly appreciate any knowledgeable suggestions from you elk hunters. thanks in advance !!

What part of the state are you coming from? Is distance an issue? Are you able to hike? The best part about the Youth Elk hunt is that you are smack in the middle of the rut. Some of the obvious areas are the South Slope-Red Cloud Loop area, Monte Cristo. There are a few holes pretty close to SLC as well.

Thanks for the replies, distance is not a problem, and he is used to spending 5 days in the backcountry on foot for mules with me. His hunt is the youth early. Not being much of an elk hunter my self I plan on getting out at least 3 or 4 scouting trips to try and get an idea how elk live. But have no idea were to start looking. thanks again!

Greatest tag for a youth, I have help a couple young hunter get a elk and it is always a great time. Being in the peak of the rut is even better, Both hunts I have done have been on the North slope and we never hunter over 2 hours. Best thing for you to do is get a elk cow call and bugle, Start watching elk hunting videos so you have a idea of what your trying to do with your calls. Scouting for elk in a any bull area is tough because they don't really show up until the ruts come around. I would be glad to help you with a couple area's-We spend most of our summer on the north slope and I would show you around if you wanted.

The early hunt is during the rut and the late is after all the other hunts. Both would be great. However, the early hunt has about a 1 in 12 chance of drawing where the late has a 1 in 70 chance of drawing. I have put my boys in for both at different times. My oldest never drew before he was to old.

However, my 15 year old drew the early hunt this year and I will try to make the most of the hunt for him. It should be a blast. At this time I plan to hunt the south slope Vernal/Roosevelt area.

However, I appriciate any information or help from fellow MM members. I have already been offered help from a few and will weigh all options/advise and use what will work best for my son and the best hunt I can come up with for him. Thanks to them that have already repleid and offered help.

I second VTelkchaser. I took my son on that hunt in 05 or 06. We went in blind and packed into the Unitas from the south side with horses. Pretty much in goat country. Got into some elk but i wasn't impressed. We packed out and ended up hunting near our roadside camp. Bugling bulls each of the last 4 days. Very fun hunt. I would PM you exactly where we hunted but I suggest you take the advice of an "expert."

I have helped a couple guys out over the years that have had a son or daughter draw this early Youth tag.

I have no problem sharing some idea's with you.

PM me if you would like.

BBD -- That would be awesome, Cody has been practicing a couple calls since the first year he was able to put in for the draw. and like most sportsman, we watch all the hunting shows on tv. Cody plays on 2 base ball teams, so he is tied up until the mid July. After that are time is open, and would jump on the opportunity to get some help with his hunt. Thanks!!
