SAN JUAN CWMU ELK

I would like to hunt cow Elk on a CWMU in the San Juan area, to do a little recon for a Bull Elk tag in the future. It would be nice to see some nice Bulls, even if I cant pull the triger on one. I know nothing about any of the CWMU's in that area. Could or would anyone point me in the direction of a quality operator. Any help would be appreciated greatly. Hope I can return the favor.

Workman--

The operators are 'cooperative' or have they not returned your call. Draw the tag first, if you have specifics about a cow hunt, again its pretty simple. Draw the tag, they will send you a letter with the map and the hunt dates. However, as I told you, killing a cow there is pretty hard for the simple reason they are pretty much absent when it comes time that you can hunt them (after October when the buck and bull hunters are done). Its a big unit and by then the elk/cows what few are left will likely be in on or 2 herds (big herds) finding them on flat farm ground is a tuff task. Knowing what I know of the unit, where the elk are or where they are not, I wouldn't get a cow tag there for the purpose of a recon mission.

However, ff you are simply looking at a pre-mature

scouting trip, I will let you in on a little secret. There are lots of county roads that bisect all of those CWMUs down there, almost every mile or 2 north or south, nothing prohibiting you from doing a 'little recon for a bull tag in the future'. You will be able to see bulls/elk from any of these county roads.

If a was doing recon for a bull tag in the future, i would go when you can hunt the bulls (not after October) not during the cow hunts.

You can also get Todds dvd. Black Timber Outfitters Bulls of the San Juan . The sell it here on this web site. It shows some great country and some nice bulls on the san juan.
