For GAWDS Sakes Guys,We Got Kids on this Site,Some of them are 65 years Old!:D

I don't care if they're big or small!
If they throw lead I like em all!
:p

SJ is a great place to hunt, But if you think you will come and scout it a few times and have a 370 or bigger bull picked out for the Bang,Bang time, BEST of Luck.

If you really want the best shot at killing a bull bigger then 350 you best hire one of the local guides to give the chance to do so. Hate to see ya just throw that tag away could be his one-in-a-time tag so don't waste it.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

Wait a minute, isn't the San Juan supposed to be one of the best units in Utah? Your advising him to turn his tag back in because he likely won't find a 350 or better bull on this unit? What should he do with his 15 points next year if the San Juan does't have any big bulls on it this year? Will it be better next year?
I don't know the San Juan at all but if you have LE elk tag for the San Juan go hunting!

The late hunt on the SJ is not a trophy class hunt. The bulls pull off the mtn. I'd turn the tag back in

Yak--

You must have missed his questions. He has a late tag, indicated his dad had killed a 350+ bull and was wanting something a bit bigger. All most of are saying is the SJ late hunt is not anything like the rut hunts. He would be hard pressed to find a 350+ bull that still scores 350+ on the unit. Unless he is approaching 70 years old, I would turn the tag back in. He could had a good chance to draw the ML tag this year and could certainly draw it in a year or 2 and HANDS DOWN, this is a much better hunt with a much better chance at achieving his goal. Not to mention a better/funner experience.

Ok my bad.
Based on the Drawing odds the early hunt has 31+/- a few tags. There are 118 +/- people with more points and 86+/- with the same points as his dad. The early hunt could take more than few years to draw with 15 points.
The muzzy hunt on the other hand he should be in the bonus pool next year and a sure thing in two years.
So based on that if your dad is still fairly young maybe turn the tag back in and go for a muzzy tag next year.

I love late elk hunts, but I'd listen to Todd on this one. Sounds like the late hunt on the San Juan is tough and with 15pts he could have a better hunt next year on several units.

My brother had the tag last year and it proved to be as difficult as everyone is saying it is for us. Had we not teamed up with Todd and BTO I am doubtful we would of brought home the kind of bull we did. I have a good friend who's brother had the tag last year as well and they ended up eating tag soup. I would highly recommend you give Todd a call and talk to him personally over the phone, and follow his advice. Obviously, you can't kill a bull from the couch, but with 15 points and having killed the kind of bulls that he has, I'd turn it back in and put in for the rut hunts and hire BTO-That is what I'm going to do myself. It will be worth the wait.

My brother had this tag 2 years ago. We hunted for 6 days, and killed the biggest bull we seen in those 6 days. The bull scored 315. Luckly he burned 1 point to get the tag. I have spent alot of time down there on August, and September, and told him we would kill a 350 bull or better. Boy did I put my foot in my mouth, very tough hunt. With 15 points I would turn the tag in for sure, GOOD LUCK!!!
