Well I don't really know where to start. It was a long week and I was glad to get back home but I sure had a great time up there. I think anything bad that could happen did happen to me. My troopers transmission is just about dead, my generator didn't work, my propane froze one night, and my trailer battery went dead. We started up high like a lot of the hunters did. Chef and I went scouting a few weeks before the hunt and everything was still high. We woke up the first morning to a frigid 18 degrees. Didn't see and sign that morning so we dropped down low and only saw a little. Bura Nut had told us where they were camping so we paid them a visit and we off to the races. The next day we probably saw 50 deer. Mostly does, fawns, and little fork horns and 3 points. So after getting our deer fix but not seeing what we were after we decided to drop down low and hunt the flats looking for one of the resident big boys. So over the next couple days we only saw a couple deer but we did see some monster tracks. Just couldn't find the owners of them. So we decided to move back up a little to the transition area that everything was in hoping that the bigger bucks were starting to show up. We were glassing one of the old burns and had just got set up and had probably seen 15 to 20 deer already when I heard something to my right. I said something to my buddy and looked over and then kept glassing. Pretty soon I heard something again and said something again. But this time I decided to grab my rifle and crawl over and check it out. I had only crawled about 10 yds when I saw a deer in the burnt brush. At this point I still couldn't tell if it was a buck or a doe. So I just kneeled on one knee and waited to see what it was going to do. It finally moved out from behind the brush and it was the first good look I got at it. At this point it is only 50 yds away and coming closer. He was a little 4X4 so I put my safety back on. He stopped at about 35 yds and turned broadside and I got a good look at his height and fork depth and I decided I might not see anything that nice again. So off goes the safety and I thought about it for a couple seconds and BLAM. By this time my buddy had gone back to glassing thinking it was only a doe. I didn't get to see it but he said he jumped about a foot off the ground the gun blast scared him so bad. So he only ended up being right at 20" wide and almost 20" high. I thought about having him mounted but have decided to do a european mount instead. When I checked him in the G&F guy said his neck was the most swollen of any buck they had checked in yet. And this was Friday night. So they are close to the rut. Over all we had a blast. Probably saw at least 300 deer, bighorn sheep, and a condor at about 25". After the first couple days I didn't think I would ever put in for this hunt again but looking at it now I would in a heartbeat. The hunt is designed to take the smaller bucks but there are some pigs taken too.

Here are some of the pictures that I took while up there.

Chef's trooper while he was up helping. Wish he could have stayed for the whole hunt. I'm sure he was wishing the same thing.

Here is our first camp. We ended up moving camp down lower so we could get an extra 1/2 hour sleep in the morning.

Here are a couple others as well. We saw a group of bighorn sheep the same day as I got my buck. They were about 600 yds away so you might have to zoom in to see the ram but it was pretty cool.

And here is a picture of the condor that we about ranover coming around a corning in the road.

I guess he has a 9 1/2" wing span acording to the girl from the condor group we talked to later. His number is 6 but it is actually 276.

Congratulation on your buck! He should make a nice mount whichever way you decide to do it. It's not like it used to be but it seems to be coming back a little each year. Nice to see you had some success and fun to boot. Enjoy.

A trip that turned out well. Nice variety of wildlife seen, nice views and colorful sunsets. Sounds like a great hunt. Congrats.

Orlin, congrats on a great buck and a good hunt. It was good to meet you guys up there. Sure were alot of deer and alot of hunters moving around. Glad you got your buck and hope you try to get the tag again............... Thanks, Allen Taylor......

Allen, it was great talking to you guys. Thanks for the help. Have you seen a picture of the buck that little Steve took the last morning? If not let me know and I will email you a picture that I took. It was as heavy as the 200" buck but just not quit the tine length and depth.

Thanks everyone else for the comments.

Nice deer! Love that country up there, Me and My Daughter will be up there this weekend.

Orlin, shoot me an email with Steve's buck. Duwane is sending me a CD with all the pictures on it, but I want to see Steve's buck and cant stand waiting for the cd. Glad your hunt went well..............email is [email protected] Thanks, Allen Taylor......

As I said to you already buddy, CONGRATULATIONS!!
Some good times and great memories that's for sure.

Guys...look at the pic of my Trooper...now look closer at what's in front...that's me! "I can hear ya but I can't see ya!"

Here's the story....

So several days into the hunt I'm waiting for the lucky tag holders to come down the mountain from where I had dropped them off three hours earlier. Next thing I know, Orlin makes it to the truck but Greg is still trekking down the mountain when he calls on the radio and says he just fount a 2x3 dead on the ground. I ask him how fresh the kill is and he says rigormortis has yet to set in. So Orlin jokes over the radio and says..."Well, looks like you got your buck, you better tag him!" So after a few chuckles I see a hunter not 75 yards away from us (and the truck) in plain sight. He looks to be still hunting but later I make the connection and realize he might be looking for a downed buck. I go over to him and to make a long story short, his buddy had shot a buck a few hours earlier. Needless to say I offer to take him to the deer. Now this is a black guy in his mid thirties weighing close to 350 lbs. As we hike up the mountain he looks as if he is going to have a heart attack! He's complaining that the buck went too far! LOL I constantly ask if he is okay and he trails a bit farther behind me as the hike goes on.

Eventually I hear him weezing and I turn to ask if he's okay. I'm standing right in front of him not ten yards when he looks around and says "I can hear ya...but I can't see ya!" I just about burst out laughing as I waved my arms around to get his attention! True story. Guess you guys had to be there. Guess ASAT works!

Hector, you forgot the shot the other guy fired off because he was lost.

After Hector takes the guy up to the deer I see another guy with the same hunter orange hat on so I ask if it is the guy that shot the buck. He said yes. So I run over and get his attention. I tell him to go straight up the ridge 1/4 of a mile and he will run right into the other guys. So I go back over to the truck and after about 10 minutes I decide to head up and see what's going on. I'm not halfway there and there is a shot fired about 100 yds to my left. I come around a corner and the other guy with us is on the ground taking cover. It ended up being the guy that shot the buck. We asked what was up. His words were, "Frankly I'm lost and was getting worried". He started heading up the ridge but somehow turned left and was way off. He was lost so he fired off a shot to let us know where he was.

We laughed about these guys for the rest of the day. And they actually got a buck. We don't know if they ever made it out though.

Nice pic. I really like you mood of transport. Those troopers will go just about anywhere.

good ones, 'az'...nice buck, and nice story. liked everything but picture #5, standing on the 'edge'...you wouldn't catch me within 50 feet of there....made my heart 'jump' just lookin' at it...thanks for sharin' with us...

AZ bowhunter:

Glad to see you guys tagged out. That one buck looks like it came from that area (burn) where we spoke to you on opening day...Did it? By the way that second morning there were about 25 deer (three bucks) that were underneath you guys at the bottom of the burn. I knew you couldn't see them. We were sitting out on the end of that point watching about 50 deer when I saw you guys on the side of the hill..

I did video a bunch of bucks in this area and we had a nice guy from Prescott named Ty (really was a good guy!) that shot a pretty 5 X 5 in that same burn. We helped get it back to his truck and took some photos of it for him.

We ended up looking at 103 bucks and my guy missed three shots at pretty good bucks. One buck he shot at two nights in a row but unfortunately didn't connect.

I know exactly where you were on the "scenic shots" cool country out there on the end. Just curious where did you see the sheep? You can pm me if you don't want to put it out.

Going back for the late hunt when I get back from my Nevada deer hunt.

Take care and congrats on the bucks.

Don, it was good to meet you. I ended up taking my buck several miles further west. The last picture with the canyon in the back is off of the 201. And that is close to where I saw the sheep. After we got mine taken care of we headed out and hiked a few miles to the edge of Jensen Point and swung around. We were looking for a big boy. Saw a few sets of tracks just not the owners. On the way back we ran into the ram and four ewes.

Sorry your client didn't tag out. There are definately a lot of deer in the area. I learned a lot about patience on this hunt.

Way to go Orlin. Glad to see your letting people know some Idaho boys do know how to hunt.LOL Sounds like you guys had a great trip even though the mishaps with equipment. Those other hunters would of had me laughing my butt off.
Again Congrats on a great buck.

AZbowhunter:

Yep we had a great time on the hunt. He did shoot a buck on day 9 right at dark. Though not a buck I wanted him to take, and we had passed many that were larger, he was happy as it was his first ever muley.

Him being happy is all that counts.

Was a great guy and I hope to hunt with him again.

If nothing else he learned about the meaning of good equipment and good glass making for a fun time!

Take care,

Don

Congratulations Orlin! Thanks for the story and photos. Beautiful country.

Chef's camo looks to be just the ticket for that country."I can hear you but I can't see you" LOL!
