I have been following MM for a couple years now. I finally drew a decent tag so i figured it was time to make an account. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. I would like to start scouting on the 24th of july weekend. Is this to early for a first trip down? Will the elk change elevation between july and september? I've been to the books before for deer but this will be the fist time for elk. Thanks for your help. I need all the info i can find!

Elk shouldn't move a ton around those times, scouting will be a good idea. Don't plan on heading in from seep ridge road, I believe its still closed and by the sounds of things it will be closed in july as well. Good luck

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

Swagger,

I've never actually had the tag, but I've spent some time down there. I don't think it's too early to head down on the 24th. The elk seem to be higher and may remain there through the muzzy, though they may get further from the roads as they get more pressure. Be ready for bears.

p.s. nice choice for a name...."ya I think he should be worried."

Don't know about the Book Cliffs but I had to give you credit for your choice in name.

Stephen Hunter is an awesome writer and Bob Lee Swagger is an even better character. I have read most of his novels and I loved everyone of them.

Best Sniper books / series I have ever read!

Welcome aboard.

When I was scouting last year for elk on the books, it was very easy to find big herds of cows during the summer. Bulls were harder to find, but they showed up once the rut starting kicking in. I mainly found hunted close to where I found the cow elk during the summer. Although, they did move a little bit away from the pressure.

Like said above, the bulls are there but harder to find, they hit the trees early. They wont move a ton by your elk hunt but, they will move off in to the holes through the rifle hunt. Your tag is the best rut action but the bigger bulls are rounding em up and heading into the nasty stuff. Hope this helps, you'll have a blast and hear a lot of bugling. Good luck.
