My 13 year old drew a youth tag for unit 34 on his second try. Anybody hunted this unit willing to shed some light?

Congratulations on a great tag.
My oldest son had that tag 3 years ago. Elk everywhere in that unit back then. He passed up 12 bulls before harvesting this one mid morning of the second day. I have heard the quality has dropped slightly the past few years. Should still be plenty of good bulls around though.I scouted the week before his hunt. From my observations there were more elk (but smaller bulls) up high in the douglas fir / aspen areas and fewer elk but larger bulls in the lower pinion areas. Largest bull I saw while scouting was around 340 - 350. Lots of 280 class bulls and a few 300's. 300 was his goal, so he was very happy. PM me if you want some specifics.

Great bull SDBugler ! Congrats to your boy!!!!

This is a picture of my oldest son's first elk. Taken from unit 34 four years ago. He shot it up high in the fir/aspen country by Cloudcroft. STEEP country up there!!!! Seemed like there were plenty of elk though!

Good luck summerville1! Also, feel free to IM me for a few details if you would like.

And pray for rain...big fire going in unit 34 this very moment.

Should make for some new elk digs!

best of luck on your hunt...should be a great hunt!

My uncle has the Mobility Impaired hunt this year. We do not expect to get him on a monster, but he hopes to have a shot at a mature bull. I'm sure he'd be very happy at a chance for either of those bulls.

Congrats to the lucky hunters and thanks for sharing the pics.

Normally I would help you guys out but I drew 34 rifle elk this year. Unless some outfitter messes up my hunt again this year I'm gonna be pullin out a bruiser. However, I don't see an outfitter messin me up since the country I will be in is gonna be so steep and the bulls in there aren't know very well.

Good luck to you guys and please post pics.........

Just the word Cloudcroft brings back memories of when I was in the Army down at Fort Bliss back in the late 60s and some winter days you could look north from the upper floor of our barracks and see snow on the peaks up there!
