IM BORN AND RAISED IN NM AND DECIDED TO PUT IN FOR A BULL HUNT SINCE I HAVE ALWAYS GONE FOR COW AND DREW A THIS TAG I NO ITS A GREAT TAG BUT WANT TO HEAR FROM OTHERS ABOUT WHAT THEY SEEN OR GOT WHILE HUNTING THIS UNIT MY HUNTS START NOW IN SEPT FOR ANTELOPE AND IT CANT COME SOON ENOUGH BY THE WAY ITS A BULL HUNT RIGHT AFTER THE YOUTH HUNT AND IT STARTS ON THE 15TH OF OCT

the guides in that area usually average 300 class bulls and not much more. I haven't seen any guides doing much better. the diy hunters in there usually average 320 and better. If you do your own prescouting you will do just find. there are lots of bulls and guides are absolutely not required in this area.

drive around at night really fast down the dirt roads. When you see bulls in your headlights simply take gps coordinates of where you see them. then a week before your hunt go back to these areas and scout the areas well and find out where the elk are. hunt there and you will almost be assured of a good 6x6 bull.

Do one night drive by in august and another in september. This will give you an idea where the big bulls are in and out of the rut because come oct 15th most of the big bull will be finished rutting leaving the younger bulls to breed. this is why the outfitters don't take the larger bulls. Not that they aren't there but because they shut the heck up. and as a critical note to you stay the heck away from mick chappel. He's the worst guide you could hire. I don't have enough time to jot down my experiences with him on here so I will leave it at that. And one other outfitter to steer clear of is the girl from luna. She's definitely not know for shooting bulls on the right side of the fence. Luckily for her she does this on property's where the guys like her father and they simply warn her and tell her to never return. Some people have all the luck.

I did a ML mulie hunt in late September about 8 years ago up as high as we could get 15 miles or so northeast of Apache Creek. It was in the 90s and slow all week because of the heat, but there were lots of elk in the area and it was some beautiful country. We even saw a cougar lurking at one of the water holes we were watching as I think he was as smart as we were and knew the animals would be into that water.

Now, that is the best post ever on this forum!

I've hunted 15 the last two years and you should have no problems getting into nice bulls.I would get out there at least five days before the hunt starts so you can find the bigger bulls in that unit.I've had my best luck in finding bigger bulls in the lower flat juniper country that alot of guys stay away from.I've also have had a few problems with some punk guides that will literally cut you off when your in middle of a stalk on a bull that you were on first,f'ing guys really piss me off !!! But like stinky said, most of the times these guides will shoot the first 300' bull they come across so they can get their tip and go home(I've seen it many of times)The goods news is that most of the bulls we've killed have been on the last or second to last day of the hunt because of the guides are done and the weekend warriors have pulled out with their 300' bull and things settle down alot.If you hunt hard and pass on alot of bulls between 300' and 320' you should come out of 15 with a bull over 330

I also drew same hunt as you. Have hunted there a couple of times. 2nd muzzle & bought tag last year 1st muzzy tag. I live to hunt elk. May be staying with Jim & Barb at Apachie Creek Lodge. Very nice & accomidating people.Best of luck to you.Hope we both post a big one. Maybe see you there.
It's the journey not the destination.
