I prepared for my 2006 Paunsaugunt rifle hunt by making several trips down to scout the unit. During those trips, I saw lots of beautiful county and several good bucks. The day prior to the opener, we were greeted with strong winds, rain and even hail. By opening morning things had calmed down. I spent the first day and a half on top of the plateau. I saw a couple of bucks in the mid-twenties but nothing that I wanted to shoot that early. On Sunday afternoon, I moved down to the middle of the unit. It was clear that the deer were migrating and I wanted to be in a transition zone. That night, I passed on a buck that I will regret not shooting for the rest of my life. It was right at dark, and by the time that I realized what I was looking at it was too late. After beating myself up for three days, I eventually took this buck on Wednesday morning. He is not a monster but I am happy with him. He is only about 24" wide but has exceptional mass and 4 1/2" eye guards. All in all it was a tough but enjoyable hunt. I would like to thank my friends, family and MM members that assisted me in gathering information and making my hunt a success.

How did everyone else do on the unit?

Great looking Buck and what a set of eye guards it has. Congrats to the hunter and also for posting the pictures.

Love those browtines! That is a good Paunsagaunt buck. Really tall and massive. He will look great on the wall. Don't worry about the one that got away. He will come back to you some day. It may only be in your dreams or nightmares - but he will return!
You've got to leave some kind of a legend still roaming the hills!

That's a nice buck!
Looks like he has an acorn tip sort of on his right rear.
Gotta love the mass.

Nice grained wood on that rifle stock.

Congrats on your really fine buck and that beautiful Weatherby you bagged him with. What caliber is your Mark V and tell us more about the shot.

Thanks,
Jim

AZBUCKSNORT-

The gun is a Weatherby Mark V in .300 Winchester Magnum. I shot the buck just as he was cresting a hill at 384 yards. I was shooting 150 grain Remington core lock bullets.
