Thanks Brian for posting this picture. Here is the story. Crazy thing is it took 12 points for the non-resident to draw. Got to the hunting unit on Thursday evening. Talk about a remote place. Scouted Friday and saw lots of deer. Most bucks were of the 20-24 in type except for one 26 in buck. He was a nice deer except for he had really short backs. Great fronts. They talk about the big elk in the unit we saw 2 different herds of elk and the 1 herd bull was a rag horn 5 x 5 with 30 cows. We thought the big boys were already off by themselves. So Saturday morning we head off to our starting spot that looked like it would be a good spot. We start walking and glassing different draws and we find nothing. So were a little disapointed with this. So we head to a different location and we run into the 26 in buck from the day before with another 24 in buck. We look at him again for 30 minutes and we decide to pass on this guy for another day. We head to another location where we looked at 15-17 does the night before. We thought is was a little strange that no bigger buck where with these does. There were 2 little bucks with these does. So we start glassing and we see a good buck 800 yard away with the does. I pull out the spotter and we decide its a good buck and we can get to him. So we start making the sneek on him and something spooks the herd and they pile into a aspen grove. We get to within 335 of them and we run out of cover. We watch the buck bed down in the aspen grove with a doe he won't leave. He gets up 3 times in the next 4 and 1/2 hours. We sat on this knoll and nearly froze. The doe finally got up and so did he. He followed her to a small clearing when the first shot rang out, missed, rack another one shoot, miss again. So we walk to the spot where we first saw the buck and he standing not 100 yards from where he shot with that doe. Fatal mistake. 100 yards off hand and he hits the buck and the buck piles up. The buck ended up being 29 1/4. A real pretty deer. The hunt was fast but fun. I think Colorado is on the right track with their game management objectives. I have never seen so many deer. All the bucks we saw were in full rut mode. Sorry for the long winded story.
