I was fortunate enough to draw a mt. dutton muzzy tag this year.
I went down last weekend to scout out access points and to get an idea of what im going to be up against. I went up in by Antimony and pretty much just drove my atv around for the 2 days. I did Hike in 2 miles on the trail by willow springs. beautiful country and was easy going till i got to a canyon from hell deep and long. Just wondering if im close to where the elk will be. If any of you can help we out it would be greatly appreciated.
I did drive around mt. dutton and down around adams head. but didn't get to hike in. Looks really good in that country too..

Had the muzzy tag in 2010. Pretty much every canyon is deep and long there bud. The elk are in there, just got to get a few miles in (between the top road and the bottom roads). One piece of advice, stay on the ridgetops hiking in and glass from them. Don't be bailing down in every canyon or you will be a worn out sack of crap within a couple days.

You might wanna take some Snake Boots too!

For GAWDS Sakes Guys,We Got Kids on this Site,Some of them are 65 years Old!:D

I don't care if they're big or small!
If they throw lead I like em all!
:p

Haha, you ran into Forest creek, that part of the canyon is a steep B. Hike and you will find them.

I would venture a guess that weather during the time you are there may dictate where the elk are and if they venture out in the more open country? If it's 80-90 degrees, full moon, and dry you can count on the elk on north slopes or ridges. If it is wet or cloudy they may come out? There is a fair amount of hunting pressure during the early rifle season fairly close to roads and gentler terrain and sometimes the elk get pushed into hellholes by rifle season. There are elk scattered throughout that unit and it's just a matter of covering lots of country to find the bull you are interested in. As you found out there is some pretty nasty canyons in that unit!

Some good info. Stay high and glass. The unit is big and deep and the bulls are there. Dont let your self get discouraged cuz if there is one unit out there that can play with your head its this one.

C'mon Bessy, there aint no snattlerakes on that godforsaken rockpile, don't scare the young man away!! ;-)

Thanks for the help. Going down again next weekend. Thinking of trying smith canyon any thoughts? Maps don't show water. what do ya think?

>I've heard the snakes outnumber the
>bulls...and from a reliable source!

>What's up SLam?

Bessy saw enough rattlers in the road to feed us all dinner if he could have hit them, good thing he's a horrible shot.....he should have just ran them over with his ATV and got the job done!

im sure there is water in smith but its tough huntin until you get to the top. there were a couple of real nice bulls around bullrush last year though.

Hey palomino did you happen to see that 6x2 last year on bull rush buddy had a rifle LE tag that was the best bull we seen and he hiked our butts off backpacker in. No luck he ended up eating tag soup. But I think it was just to hot.

Hang on just a minute PUNK!

T'was my Gun(3-5-7!)but wasn't me doing the shootin!

I still remember that Warden we met up on top that asked me what kind of permit I had to be packin the 3-5-7 during an LE Hunt?

I don't know if he liked it when I said:I've got a U.S. Birth Certificate that says I'm an American,And I will pack & bare Arms,then He said:Good Answer!:D

Then PUNK said to the Warden:Do you know who You're dealin with?

LMAO!

Anyway, the old Silver Side Arm has a few notches in it,just about anybody that's been around me can confirm that,Except CUPSY,He's never seen me shoot it!:D

rperkins?

Guess we better bug out wouldn't you say bessy and slam? Do you still have pics of that rattler we were playin with slammy? Does rperkins remember your 357 and snakes there bessy. I think thats the guy that drove up in his car askin about jperkins right? lol

If you really want a big bull you need to go around fillin up all the quad tanks with diesel. That will take about 7 to 8 thousand people out of the canyons.

I can tell you about every canyon on mt dutton, i was raised on a ranch by what they call rex's bridge, and every year we would kill around 29 snakes, and have them for a snack, and your 357 is just a toy. you sound like one of those city hunters, that dream what you do, this hunter ask a question and would like some help, can you give him help?

perks knows where the bulls are better than any of us. We don't live there but you do. We can tell him where we found the elk a few years back when we hunted it but you can tell him where you see them dern near every day. Not to be rude but where not exactly the guys who should be tellin him where to hunt. If your nice to mr perks there you may just get a really sweet hookup.

Hey Stinky, yes i have pics of you with that rattler you picked up with your bare hands.....i'm not going to tell you what Denise called you! lol
I still think Bessy should have cut that old "family tree" down in Smith we saw. I doubt it would make good fire wood though, i'm sure it too "hard headed" burn.
I know it got watered every morning ;-)

roflmao. at least u only pissed on it. i think someone else went a little farther with it. but that tree being felled is now on my bucket list lol

Hey guys so I didn't make it up smith canyon. But did go up cottonwood. Haven't found the elk yet. And im not sure where the elk will be by the time the muzzleloader hunt starts. But I am learning the country a little better. Thank goodness I haven't found a snake either!! I did spot a muley with chester making him close to 30" way fun to see!!! Any info would be appreciated.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-24-11 AT 03:56PM (MST)[p]Ha! Sorry stinky, tried hitting you up on some tips last year on the unit and it was like I was your red headed step child lol :)

Still have the palm print indentation on the ass cheek

From my intel, you have that pile patterned pretty well and have all the tricks in your bag.

Stinky

I remember when you 2 went head to head at the hunt expo, well his head to your chest. :) scrappy little bugger.

Good times *sigh*

Perkins, isn't that where the Mossbacks supposedly had a 400" penned up last year trying to get? I thought of hitting that area but never did.

moss tried to block roads, but just run over him. the elk will run in flake mt after the rifle hunt, it a easy mt to hunt. if you go back down, take a look at it.
