What to do?

Okay, buck season starts tomorrow. Last 2 days has been snowing and cold, looks like it could snow most today and maybe into tonight then clearing for opening day.

Any experiences with deer and storm moving out for you guys? Are they out at daylight, are they moving more throughout the day? What and how would you hunt? I'm debating on going up to about 8,500 feet where I have never hunted and really don't know if there are any deer up there or if I should go sit out in my father in laws field and hope I catch a buck crossing.

I have hunted late in Idaho, where the deer are in snow up to their bellies, and it is HARD to get them to move to lower elevations. I have hunted in Salt Lake area where 6 inches makes them go...so hard to say.
I have found that Deer seem to hold up in storms and then move when they subside. So if I hunt the first day after a storm I plan on them being where they normaly are. If I hunt a couple days after a good storm I plan on them being in a different spot.

Good Luck!

I agree with bowhunt, the deer usually move after the storm breaks.

It's hard to say exatly what the deer in your area do. Like was said, some deer move when it gets cold, while other's wait till it's belly deep. On indicator is the range in which they live. they generally move toward winter range but my "hang" up along the way, so long as it's a place they know they wont get trapped in by a larger storm.

I'd say this much, not knowing your deer,

1. they will be on the move and feeding just after a storm, that much you can bet on

2. this is on the front of the rut, regarless of the weather, watch for bucks, at any elevation if you see does.

Depending on snow depth, I'd say if it's significant, and the deer have not already moved to winter ranges due to a previous storm, be on the lookout for migrating deer and prepare to hunt durring ALL daylight hours!!!!!!!!!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-14-06 AT 02:30PM (MST)[p]I wish I could be out at daylight tomorrow but I can't get off work until around noon. It's killing me too, because it is already clearing up but the wind is really howling right now so I bet the deer will be bedded down until early morning hours.
Oh well, I have until Sunday night so heeeeerrrre we go.
