Hi guys,

My son drew a youth any bull tag this year. We have been checking into the south slope and have been looking at hunting there. We recently heard about the Monte Cristo area. Are there any elk up there in September? I've never hunted northern Utah, and would appreciate some pointers.

Thanks
Jesse

elk do to bugle in september. thats when they rut. you will be hard pressed to hear a big bull bugle on monte though because of the hundreds of other people that hunt it. i would stick with the uintahs if I was you.

It was a big bodied 2 point.

Monte Cristo is split in half. One side of the road is a Limited Entry unit (South Cache). The other side of the road is full of CWMUS. There is some national forest on the open bull side, but it is usually packed with people. There really isn't a ton of area to hunt on that side. A couple miles is about all you can hike until you run into Deseret or another CWMU. These bulls rarely come off the CWMUs in September because all the cows hang out on Deseret. The muzzleloader hunt can be good if it snows it's gets the bulls moving around quite a bit.

Having said that, there are still people that shoot bulls off of that area. The ones that kill are extremely familiar with the area and animal habits, or just dang lucky.

I think I would hunt the Uintas If I were you. You at least have a ton of country to explore and don't have to worry about private stuff in most areas.

Good Luck

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like Cedar Mountain in the southern portion of the state. Not too bad, but it sounds like there are better choices.

Looks like the boy and I will be headed up to the south slope. Thanks again.
