Just wondering how many 400 inch bulls you all think will be killed in utah this year. Should be a pretty good year for big bulls, but I think there will only be a few taken that hit that magaical number.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-10-11 AT 01:52PM (MST)[p]My guess would be three to five, about the same as last season. I only have seen and heard of a few from last year, there could have been a few more.

Although there is lots of feed now, it was not there in the spring/early summer when the bulls started growing their horns. It was a very very late winter and IMHO opinion did not help with antler growth since the grass was slower coming back this year. It was also a hard winter for most of the state due to the cold and deep snowpack.

I am not a scientist or biologist, but if everything holds true on calfs dropping at the same time each year and antlers growing during the same growing period, the spring did not help since it would mean less food to eat during critical early development.

If I remember right, some of the best producing years in antler size were the drought years of 05-08. Granted, there was less tags back then, but there seemed to be a lot of giant bulls that hit the dirt. I feel that mild winters and early springs are more important than lots of grass later in the summer after bulls have done most of their development. Just my .02...

Probably correct on the prediction, but seems strange when you will hear about how many other 400+ bulls were seen and were lucky to get away during the season. It always amazes me how many people report seeing 400+ type bulls during their hunts.

I know my daughter will kill a 400"+ bull this year. I've become very "creative" on measuring antlers. I'm willing to share all my vast knowledge on scoring with anyone who cares to know. LOL

OK back to reality:
While rare, 400" bull are tagged every year and this year will be no exception.
Your question about how many will be killed is a good one. I don't KNOW what the late winter and good feed (late) will do for growth. I do know that all the bull we've been seeing look healthy and the antler growth seems similar to other years but I don't really KNOW since I can't tell you I'm seeing the same bulls from year to year.
I would guess a handful of 400" bulls will hit the dirt.

This season will be interesting and fun fun fun!

I know of at least one that will. And my tag will be on him.......Ok maybe he will be more like 320 i hope but by hell he will look 400 in my eyes.

Its all just a number i think. It would be fun to see something of that caliber one day though.

Standards are set pretty low Jason. I think you will get a 360+ buddy.

All in all, I will guess 5 or 6 bulls over that mark will be taken for the year.

Ugh...all this talk about "400 inch" bulls makes me ill! I remember when I was younger the famous score was 350. Everyone wanted to kill that magical 350 bull. Is there really any difference between a 395 bull and a 401 bull? Ok, the obvious answer is "yes, 6 inches" but if 100 bulls were killed that scored 395 would it get half the attention of 10 bulls scoring 400? I don't get it. I realize this post is just a fun guessing game and I may just need medication...but this score thing has gotten so out of hand..at least to me.

Ok, sorry...I'll get back in my straight jacket now...
