Got back a few days ago from this hunt in Dubois, Wyoming. It was a great hunt in some beautiful country. My father in law killed a nice 28 inch four point that placed fourth in the Stagecoach Motor Inn's big buck contest. My deer came in first place and it was a 7X6 that still had some velvet on the horns. It was my best deer to date. We saw a lot of deer everyday. How did everybody elses hunt go? I don't know how to post a picture but I would be glad to emailing to someone if they know how.

Well, here makes three of the top four. Mine placed second. Your cheaters got it on the width, which mine has not much.
Good job. I do not remember running into you. It only snowed once, mine was Wednesday last week, yours must have been close to that.
As fun as it was, it really made me have mixed feelings about late rut hunts. It was my first. Now, my son has a late junior hunt here in CA. J12, Round Valley. Hopefully, my buck will be second in our house this year too.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-24-06 AT 08:42AM (MST)[p]All of these are nice deer. Elmer, what kind of mixed feelings do you have about hunting during the rut? Just curious for I have never had a rut tag myself but I did go out with someone this year who has a late tag but the rut had barely begun. Do you feel that it is an unfair advantage to hunt bucks in the rut? Here in NE Nevada our rut hunt is an archery hunt and it is tough to get on a big buck with all of those does running around. By the way, I can't believe how tall your bucks antlers are. fatrooster.

Well, I obviously took the opportunity. But, yes. They are concentrated in lower more open country and have their minds on something else. Archery would level the odds a bunch. The warden there feels that too many just approaching being really good are harvested, really hurting the upper end trophy potential of the area. I agree. Although shooting a nice buck on that hunt would be pretty easy, finding a really nice one is tough. All three bucks shown here are very nice, but this is the toughest deer hunt to draw in WY with 100 tags. I know the one I took was easily the best buck I saw in the field in 11 days of hunting. I only had a second to look at him, I was stillhunting timber midday, but I could tell that in a second. Do not get me wrong, it was fun and I am sure it will be even more fun with my son trying to get him a bigger one.

I'll have to agree with you Elmer and say that I also have mixed feelings about hunting mule deer in the rut with a rifle. Thanks for your opinion. fatrooster.

128 late is one of the few deer area's in the state the WY G&F actually manages as a trophy area. If folks have reservations about a rut hunt, there's plenty of other early season area's to apply for...

Well, one myth I heard about rut hunting is complete BS. I heard the meat is not good. My buck is very tender and tastes great. For whatever reason, it is one of the best eating deer I ever had. Looks like I'll have to thaw two packages at a time from now on. It was an older buck with pretty worn teeth, too.
