Literally. We went out on Saturday to see what we could see for whitetails. We saw a decent buck in the morning that Dan thought he might like. I thought it was too small so there was no argument on who was going to get to shoot. We went after him and after a couple of hours of seeing some small bucks and lots of mule deer we spotted him a doe and a small buck slowly go over a hill. We headed for the hill and just before we were going to crest it we saw another buck. He was with a doe and was just standing on a hill. WE watched him and I said he was smaller than the other one so again didn't want to shoot. I was telling Dan he was 140 gross max. I almost had him talked out of shooting it but he decided he thought it was pretty good and was going to shoot it if he had the chance. We couldn't move without them seeing us so we waited. We got a break when a medium buck and a small buck came up the hill towards him . Him and the medium buck locked antlers and began an all out scrap. The little guy immediately went after the doe and chased her down the hill. This was the break we were waiting for and while the bucks were distracted we we got down in a dip and out of sight of the bucks. When we came over the rise about 100 yards or so from the bucks I told Dan I would tell him which buck was the bigger one and when they broke he could shoot. While we were watching then scrap another buck came up the hill to the fight. He was obviously a scrapper as well as he was soaked in blood on his neck. The bigger buck ended up losing and began to head south. I told Dan he was the one on the right and he made a perfect shot and he went down quickly. I was still thinking this was only a 140 gross deer. We thought we might as well have a short look for the other bigger buck since I might take a shot if he looked decent. We never found him so made our way back to Dan?s deer. As we came over a small rise in front of the deer I could see the one antler sticking up above the grass. This is when I realized I may have greatly under estimated this buck. When we got up to him I was amazed and said I needed to be kicked in the ass. The buck very roughly grossed 168 which was quite conservative and he will likely be right at the 170 gross mark when more time is taken to score him. I couldn't believe I had said he was too small and that the other bigger buck was too small as well. I think I have been spending too much time looking at mule deer.
Now to the pigs. While Dan was tagging his buck and I was sitting back watching him, I thought I heard a noise behind me and turned around. My first thought was what is a herd of cows doing out here. I quickly realized that it was a herd of 8-10 wild pigs. I said to Dan ? I want a pig ? and grabbed my gun. They were well within rifle range and I aimed at the lead hog and when it cleared the others I fired. I could here the hit and just after I fired Dan fired at one near the rear. He hit the ground beside it and it turned back. I put one more shot in mine then turned to help him try and anchor his. A couple shots each later he had one shot into it and it had disappeared from our site. We now had to track a couple of pigs. We saw mine first and after a few more shots ( a horrible display of shooting) we had it on the ground. WE then tracked Dan?s. It had went quite a ways but jumped up in front of us in some thick bush. Luckily it went away from us and I was able to put two shots into it and put it down for good. We now had two pigs and a buck on the ground that all needed field dressing. It was a busy remainder of the afternoon for us. All in all it was a very exciting day of hunting. Sorry they are not mule deer but thought you might enjoy the story and photos.
