Will it still score?

LAST EDITED ON Nov-26-06 AT 08:08PM (MST)[p]This is a pic of a buck that I guided my buddy to. The sad part of the story is this: He shot the buck at 6 pm. We tracked it and found it alive at the top of the hill in the pic. We made another sneek on him and he delivered one fatal arrow to the heart. The buck stood up and then fell and began to tumble. He proceeded to roll untill he stoped at the bottom of the hill where the pics were taken. When we caught up with the deer we were surprised that the velvet was not even scratched much less any broken antlers. After cleaning the deer we tucked it in a set of reeds near a creek and began our five mile walk out of the canyon bottom at dark. As we walked in the next morning we couldnt help but think of what could happen leaving the animal over night unatended. When we arrived we were thrilled to see the big buck laid right were we left it untouched. After hours of packing the animal out we made it to camp with every once of meat and the cape. Since he was the only one of the four of us to tag out and we had one day left in the season, we decided to cover the meat and hunt the next day befor returning home. We loaded all the meat into coolers and covered the meat with sealed bags of ice. We didnt have a large enough cooler for the antlers and cape so we wraped it in a large canvas tarp and placed it under the RV for the day. When we returned to camp that evening we were devistated to find the head and cape laying in the dirt. The toung had been chewed out of the deers mouth and the antler tips had been chewed down about four inchs per point. We arnt sure weather coyote's did this or the dogs of a near by ranch did the damage but at any rate we were in shock. When we got back to town we took the head straight to the taxidermist. He told us that since we had pics befor the damage that he could resurect the antlers and recover them with velvet and nobody would be able to tell. Here is the question that has taken me so long to ask. Will the buck still be scorable after it is recreated? I know this is a P&Y buck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also feal free to take a guess at what you think he would have scored.

Youre buggard, he wont score - sorry to hear about the luck, after the kill of an awesome buck. gross green 171

I'm sure you know that B/C wont enter velet, so you can subtract about 25% of the score. . . because of the fur. I dont see 7 inch bases, and if he's 29, it's on the outside of the fur, if you streaching the tape.

Great buck nonetheless, and a nice field photo taboot!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-26-06 AT 08:46PM (MST)[p]Maybe I missunderstand how to measure. Spread is the farthest outside spread. Bases are just above the hair and tines are from tip to the V. Am I wrong? If I am I have a few animals to remesure..HAHA Keep in mind that the guy in the pic is 6'3'' 240.

Love to see bowkills! Awesome story and trophy- that's what makes a memorable hunt.

As for score I'd say about 165 or lower net with fur, but that's with my guess of a 25" spread and 5 1/2- 6 bases. Easy P&Y!Unscoreable now though as mentioned before.
Nice trophy!

First off, it's a nice looking archery buck. The hunter should be proud. From the photos provided, it looks like a solid 165-170 net class animal. (with or without velvet...25% difference TF??)

I'm also an official measurer for P&Y and can tell you that it most definately WOULD have made the book before it was re-created. Unfortunately, no animal can be accepted into the records program after it has been altered in any manner. So no, it can not be entered. Nice buck though. Next time secure the cape and head inside. :)

when field judging velvet bucks/bulls, subtract 25%, as you will have to strip the buck for a B/C score.

kinda, I dont know PY rules, I only know BC and your likely giving the buck more than he would get from a BC scorer. . . So, 170 is close. . .

Like I said, its a great buck, dont sweat the score. . .

Never heard that before TF. So, if I'm looking at a 200" class velvet buck in the field, he would actually be a 150 class without velvet??? Doesnt sound like an accurate number to me.

That's not my fault.

25% is conservative, 20% might be better, but I've heard different guys use 20% but never much less. The light throught the velvet and the fur itself, make the antlers look about 20-25 percent larger. . .

TF,

I started to call you an idiot till I reread your 25% comment. Since you are talking about field judging and not actually "taping" the horns I think I agree with you. 20% might be closer but they do "look" way bigger with velvet.

He won't be scoreable so don't sweat it as mentioned, just enjoy your trophy. Those aren't 7 inch bases, you might be measuring the burr, but the actual measurement is the smallest point between the eyeguard and the burr. Probably about 5 inches in the velvet and less than that out of it on that buck would be my guess. He is a wonderful trophy and sorry he got mangled.

Okay, and since we are in the www and we only have a picture, I'm taking a bit off for the velvet based on my assumptions. I think there must have been some measuring errors.

I dont mind talking about score and measure, if a guy post a photos of a dead buck and askes for a score. . . otherwise I would not have said a thing. . .

Take care

He won't be scoreable?

what do you mean. He still is scorable, he just wont score well.

When I measured the bases I put the cloth tape right between the burs and the eye guard. The silver end on the tape was facing up and it measured a 1/16 under 7 inchs with vervet on. I know that seams big but I couldnt gey my hands around the bottoms. I realy think the buck is bigger then the pic looks.

Get him scored before the recreation is done and you should be fine. If the recreation of the antlers are already done, then you cannot have him scored.

Pretty buck though.

nv_hunter,

You must use a 1/4" steel tape for B&C measurements. This buck has 6-7/8" bases for official measurments.
