Got my entiat late archery buck yesterday. Not a monster, but I didnt really see to many really good bucks either. Hes a nice 4x3 with eyeguards, probably 20 wide. Get the pictures on cd back from costco tommorrow and will post then. Lets here how everyone did!!!

congrats, I too hunted hard in the Entiat unit, I saw a lot of 120 - 140 type of bucks, couldn't seal the deal. Finally ended up taking a forky I'm a little dissapointed.

Looking forward to your pics.

I have a buddy that hunted it hard for four days and did not see any wall hangers. Lots of deer but the best buck was a 4 X 7 about 23" wide. Not what he was expecting. It will be interesting to see how the late season goes. He and his boy both brought back meat but he was dissapointed. There were more people hunting the area than before it went to a draw only area. There should only be about 150 people each season so I don't know how that is possible. I thought they had enough weather to get the big boys down but maybe not. They definitely have the weather now though. Good Luck to those with the late tag.

The most interesting buck I saw was a 24" 4 x 1 yes a 4 x 1 he had a perfect 4 with deep forks and a tall eye guard, the other side had perfect shape in fact from the front you couldn't tell it from a normal buck. The spike side did have a perfect eye guard.

Better yet, as I was trying to put the sneak on him I got to wittness him bread a doe. What a stud, 6 times in about 5 minutes. I was pretty excited, I had never seen that before. Back to the hunt, I was at 80 yds, it looked like I had plenty of good cover to get at least another 30 yds, but low and behold I got busted by a bedded doe I didn't see. That was my life story. I called my wife that evening and told her about my day and the buck breading the doe and how I thought it was cool to see, see said "you are such a perv". These women just don't get it.

The best buck I seen was a 23 inch 4x4. I went as high as I could possibly get above were potatoe and mud merge and found few deer and track. Seems there was plenty of deer down low, to many actually, it made stocking difficult with so many eyes. I heard someone seeing a real big buck, but I sure didnt, and I put some mile on the boots thats for sure. I am starting to think that the late rifle tags and probably the late archery tags are putting a hurt on the bigger bucks, the rifle guys have killed quite a few good buck along with years past bow hunters and now it could be finally catching up to us. Who know maybe the big bucks are just now coming down, I suppose well find out soon.

i dont think that its the late rifle and archery tags that are putting the hurt on the deer, i just dont think that they have fully moved in, or have already headed lower than people think. i was up the entiat the two days before the late archery season started. spent the first day on the west side of the river in the chiwawa unit, and in an hour or two saw 40-45 deer with 6-10 of them being bucks. next day went up mud creek and saw half the numbers.

Hi everybody, haven't posted in 4-5 years, I actually had to get the big wigs to pull my username out of the archives. I have the Chiwawa D tag, starts Friday, 12/1. Can anybody tell me what the access is like towards the Tyee?

Reading these posts is kind of scaring me, I've been hunting the local spots around Cashmere and have seen at least 5 good bucks in the 24" - 28" range. I hope the Chiwawa tag is worth the extra drive every morning.

Thanks for the help

LAST EDITED ON Nov-28-06 AT 08:18PM (MST)[p]Well here they are. Now the Story!!!!

I was hunting up mudd creek up one of the lower roads all the way up top. I was working my way down into a big bowl were I like to sit and spotted about 15 deer one of which was the buck of took. The snow was coming down very hard, close to a white out, the buck spotted me right away and was between me and were I wanted to go. I fiqured well I just keep on path to get to my spot and if he doesnt take off maybe Ill get a shot in route. I work my way down to the out grade thats covered with blow downs and easy my way along the bucks watching the whole time, finally I close the distance which is about as close as I can get now, I range, draw back settle in and release with calm nerves. I hear the smack of my jacket and bow string and am istantly bummed. The deer trots off about 100 yards out appearing unscathed and beds down next to a fallen tree. Fiquring I missed, I work my way down to were the deer was standing look for my arrow and blood and find neither. Now I fiqure Ill try and stock the deer again, this time I get to withing 30 yards of him facing away from me. I ease my badlands pack off my shoulders and pull the geovids up and range various points around the deer with hopes for an easy shot, I fiqure this is an ace in the hole. 3 minutes later the buck must have got wind, he stands and walks straight away from me offering no shot, I grunt trying to get him to stop, it just spooks him and off he goes now Im really bumming I fiqured it was going to be to easy, definetly not the case. I walk down to were he was bedded and am amazed to find a big pool of dark red blood. I had hit him, he hadnt started bleeding until he bedded down, now the stock is on. I soon find pieces of liver in the fresh snow, tracking was very easy even if he stopped bleeding. The deer is heading north into the next drainage I find him and put a stock on which is eventually blown, and sends him to the next drainage. He is stoved up pretty good and no hes not going to go far, I had to keep on him though the snow was coming down so hard it would cover his tracks in no time. To make a already long story short, he went through 5 drainages, got real close several times but always got busted. He finally ended up bedding 15 feet above the entiat river road, a car goes by sees the buck backs up the deer stands the passenger shoots and misses from about 20feet. The deer walks off through someones yard crosses the entiat river road walks down to the river gets about half way across the river and about tips over, finally makes it to the other side and beds with his legs still in the water, one finally shot and he rests for good in the entiat river. I then cross the river get permission from the landownner to go through his field and down to the river to recover the deer, take some pictures above the river, and then hitch hike a ride back up to the top of the mountain to my truck, and thats all she wrote. Already thinking about next years plans and hoping to draw the tag again, maybe take the hole season off next time. Hope I didnt bore anyone but its my last hunt of the year so I fiqured Id share it with you. He not a monster but I have a hard time passing up a 4 point when Im archery hunting. Good luck to all you second season tag holders and to Garrett and his dad with the rafle tag hope you guys find the big ones. James

Oh ya is you look at the point of the shoulder blade and go about 3 inchs back you can see my first shot, a pass through that was about an inch low of the heart, it looks good but ended up being just a hair to low. Also it took 4 hours to finally but him down after the first shot, unbeilievable deer very hard earned, I was worn out after the persuit.

Good job Bearhunter on the recovery. Last year I had that same tag and shot a buck up Mud and ended up finally getting him over on Potato. Even tracking wounded deer in the snow can be tough so I know the feeling when it is finally over. With all the snow I figured you guys would be seeing plenty of mature bucks as we normally do over there maybe they were down lower? We hunt those same areas mud and potato inbetween the roads and usually see some nice bucks. Maybe the late tag will be better however I put in for the first one too. nwhunter

Ya, maybe the big boys were lower than were I was hunting. I think Im going to put in for the second season next year. In the past that when I killed my bucks, Dec 3 and 8th and both were nice big deer.

Nice buck! Man - the color of his rack sure makes him look like a whitetail - but definite muley symmetry and forking! Also the way his hide is matted with the moisture makes him look mighty whitey too - could he be a hybrid?

James, Again I have to congratulate you on another successful adventure. Stop by sometime!

Mike

Ya his horn coloration was a little different than most of the bucks up there. His hair is like that because he just crossed the river. Hey Mike thanks, I tried to call you earlier today twice around 4:30 no answer machine though. Talk at ya later. James

There is probably a lot of snow on tyee now. My 17yr old son had the late rifle tag there this year. I would take a snowmobile with me, its legal when the road is impassable by truck. We to the last 5hrs of the season on Nov 18, he shot a solid 170 buck. Our friend took a great 181 buck 3 days later on the mussleloader tag. We will post pics in a day or so.
