Montana Draw Questions

I am interested in applying in Montana for Elk and Deer. How does the draw work for the limited units? Do you have to apply for a general tag first? Are there preference points - I think there are for sheep, goats, etc and are they worth getting in if you have no points now?

Draw a tag first, if successful then you can apply for special units and yes you are behind in points but not too far and yes, they are worth getting.

the bonus points give you one more chance in the hat the following year. It is worth the 20 bucks for that extra chance. And if you apply for everything at once that 20 bucks is for them all. Good luck

Is it possible for a Non. Res. to draw the Deer/Elk conbo license with no points or do you need atleast one?

Yes you can draw. I have seen guys draw 4 years in a row! There is no preference in the draw, only bonus points so having points helps a lot but is not a given.

First you put in for a general tag, then if selected, you put in for a limited tag. You better plan on hunting in MT even if you don't draw a limited unit because you will have invested several hundred in tags in the first drawing.

I drew the combo tag three years in a row. Then I have not drawn the last two years. I have two points for the reg draw going into this year. I have three elk points and hope to draw a special elk permit some year.
