This is an Eastern Oregon Stag that I took a few years ago. It is a 5x3 that measures 28 1/2".

Nice buck--

A question though --he was a stag buck because....?

I ask this because he looks like he has a fairly 'typical' frame and the antlers don't look like those of a stag or cactus buck.

Thanks

Shawn

Not all "stag" bucks are nontypical. That are different circumstances that cause the condition (velvet antlers, oftentimes never shed), sometimes an injury and sometimes not. What ever the cause, it (the retention of velvet) is generally due to a testicular abnormality. The "stags" have enough testoterone to produce antlers, but not enough to shed the velvet. I took a buck this year that was a perfect typical and in the velvet in the beginning of October. His testicals had not decended. My guess is that it was a birth defect.

I'm not positive, but I was told that these bucks were maybe bit by some kind of fly when they were young. For some reason this causes their testicals not to develop. I have heard of quite a few stags taken in this area over the years. This buck was not very old, but he weighed 300+ live.

Nice Buck forsure... You mind me askin where in eatern oregon that this was taken!

Hey Manny,

The buck was killed I think on Oct. 4th in the rifle season. It was taken about 10 miles from the Idaho border.

Now I think I understand, you can have big horns, but no balls! Is that it? I believe I know a guy like that....
