Anybody seen or know where the elk are on the Paunsaugunt Unit? I feel like i have covered pretty much all of the plateau and talked to a bunch of people and neither I or anyone else has seen a single elk. Anybody that can help me out it would be very appreciated. Just send me a pm or reply back here. Thanks, I'm pretty frustrated about the hunt so far.

I had a rifle tag on that unit couple of yrs ago. I did have a hard time finding elk while scouting. Hunt time rolled around, we had rifle tags, and my Dad and I did ok. I would check Blue Fly Creek, Whiteman Bench and Kanab Creek. We got our biggest bull out of Blue Fly.

Good luck. Let me know if I can help out more.

I have a rifle tag up there and have only seen a few in all of my scouting, I know it is tough on the bow hunt. I think one out of ten filled last year. I am hoping it comes together for the rifle hunt. What tag do you have? PM me and I will let you know what I have seen.

utcubby, pm sent

I hunted Whiteman Bench this past weekend and ventured up into Kanab Creek one evening also. Didnt see anything up there but it looked like a great place. This past weekend there were lots pf people up there camping and riding there ATV's I headed over to Bluefly on my way to Daves hollow one evening but didnt get up in there yet. It is one place I was planning on trying my next time out. Like I said there were a lot of people everywhere this past weekend. Im hoping that was the last big camping trips for everyone up there and the real hunting can begin.

Thanks for the replies, anyone else seen anything?

No kidding here, you should check the area just south and west of Ruby's Inn (outside of the park of course). A couple years ago, there was a small herd of 20-30 coming into those fields every night and there were a couple good bulls with them. I think the biggest one was taken by a kid (rumored to go 380), but there were younger ones that may have grown a little since then. We were camped there hunting antelope, and the bulls were bugling all night, every night keeping us awake. It's still a little early, but they should start getting alot more vocal in the next couple of weeks, and this colder air couldn't hurt. Good luck.

dleonard,
The area you are talking about is Daves Hollow. I have hunted that pretty hard because i have heard a lot of people tell me the same thing you did. Hopefully it will cool off and they will get fired up and start talking. I know friday night they didnt come down into the fields because i was set up waiting and it just didnt happen. But hopefully colder weather pushes more into that area.
Thanks

I had a archery deer tag down there in 2009 and I acutally saw 10 plus bulls on the plateau and most of them where in the old burn on the south end of the plateau!

I haven't been down on the unit this year but here are the locations I've found elk over the last 10 years. Not in any order of priority.

Davis Hollow.

The meadow and ridge east of the main road that follows the creek south of Tropic Res., where the Kanab Creek road turns off to the west.

Upper Crawford Road, near the Loop Road intersection.

The first half mile into Horse Hollow, never beyond that. Usually in the first big meadow.

Go as far west as you can in Blubber, then out on the points above the private property, north of the metal tower.

Down under the Pink Cliffs: on the road that goes north along the east side of the Skutumpah Ranch, off the Glendale to Canyonville Road. I think they feed on the ranch and leave, going east across the road that goes north along the property.

Nothing very specific nor current here but over the years these areas seem to have seemed to have elk more than some others.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone for the pm's and the help here. I know they are in there somewhere and I'll find them. Thanks again for trying your best to help me out.

I was down there this last weekend scouting for deer and I saw a small herd with 3 bulls in it. They were just starting to bugle a little and playing around in the mud. Anyway, if you take the tropic lake road all the way down to where it ends there is another road that takes off to the east. take that road all the way up to where it ends and you will have one of the best vantage points I have found down there. from that spot look in the canyon to the east and that is where they were. I dont know the name of the canyon or road, sorry. Good luck.......

Also been down there looking for deer with not much luck but anyway an outfitter was down there last week with a guy and they killed a nice bull up crawford pass and there was one spotted from a guy in our group at the very end of Robinson. During the scouting trips the majority of the elk were all down farther south in Skutumpa if you want to go that far they are there. Did see some good sized herds right at dark over just east of Daves Hollow, There is a service cabin down in there take the road that Y's left from the service cabin road, then you will come to a gate you will have to go on foot from there nothin to big but the big one might move in there if they are rutting. If you continue to just follow that road past the gate it does loop around into the timber and will pop you out on the whiteman bench road. Good luck if you see any deer my buddy with the tag is heading back down tonight, let us know what you see.
