My cousins half dead twice removed uncles left nut drew the tag and needs help......

We have been in the area before but haven't scouted much this year for any number of the following reasons

No time, gas is too expensive, too lazy, a friend of a friend has offered to help us but now can't, its too hard to find an elk, the weather is making it too hard for us, been busy helping other people hunt.....ETC ETC

Can anyone please help me??? I wanna help him get a great 400+" bull and am willing to hike 5 minutes to find it, he is a smoker but can get around ok where should I take him????.....

seriously though, i'm gettin people and calls like this!!!!

With the 500+ tags they give out, I am sure there are plenty of those type of people calling you to get some free help.

If you want a 360+ bull and do not want to do the work, hire a good guide to do it for you. Just my thoughts...

berry,
I feel your pain bud, but there are some of us who have 20 plus days of scouting and pushing 10 days of hunting on the Snatch archery hunt that are still not having much luck. So undoubtedly you experts are going to get calls! It's the price you pay for fame! LOL
By the way, I am not one of the callers...But...you know the rest of the question. ha.

I guess my question is; why would they only want a little 400" bull? EVERYONE knows the Wasatch is covered in bulls much larger than that! They're a dime-a-dozen..... right?

Like I said before, bblaster, just about everything you said about this hunting season has come true. Now, will you make a prediction that my daughter will kill a big bull on the rifle hunt so I can start sleeping-easy at night? LOL

It has been a tough year but I think it's tough every year for the early archers. Most guys are burned out by now and the hunting is finally starting to get good-er.

Like LBH said; It's the price of fame! Nobody's calling me for info! LOL

What? I thought you were guiding!

PS: I left you a cell voicemail. I was out of town when you called me.

You'll find one dingleberryblaster, i have faith in ya!! ;-)
I'm up here with BHWAR, she keeps a short leash on me or i'd come help!!

Don't do it Berry, let em all grow !
I'm looking at that tag next year, and I don't want to have to work too hard because you kilt em all this year !!!

How much do you charge for information? lol I always figured being a guide was an all or nothing deal. You want info, you pay.
Just forward all your calls to someone else

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

Thats the deal Kawboy, all or nothing.....littlebigone, thats a different situation were I able to help you i would in a heart beat....you have put the effort in. Some of the guys I've talked to are flat out unbelievable.....

Guides are always defending their clients from those that do not think highly of guided hunters. The usual defense is that outfitters and guides are useful for those that don't know the area well enough, don't have time to scout, are not as able to get around, are new to the sport, hunting time constraints, don't have all the equipment, etc. Now it seems that when people with those same issues contact you for information they are lazy, a bother or less deserving of help. Could this be because they are not paying you? Is the guy that is asking for free information somehow less than the one that is willing to pay for it? I am not judgeing you, I like to make money too. I am just curious if this is influencing your attitude.

The people who hired a guide were smart enough to realize that, for whatever reason, they needed help. And they took action to make that happen.

I think the difference is that the folks calling BB have put no thought into the matter, save it were to ask.......wait a minute....

We all like some help from time to time.
But, think about it, a guide makes his living off guiding paying clients not handing out free information to those who won't help themselves.
Lot's of friends have helped me in preparation for my daughter's hunt but they are not guides who make a living at the game.
If I'm not willing to pay a guide, I shouldn't be dumb enough to ask him for help.

2 cents,
Zeke

Mulecreek, my answer to your response is quite simply integrity....I don't think it would be at all fair to someone who has paid me for my time, effort, equipment, and knowledge, to give some guy who has put little to no effort into his tag the same attention.....

That has nothing to do with defending the guided guys from the holier than thou DIY crowd. It is a matter of honesty, something that we take fairly seriously, I have helped several people this year with some ideas and those people have put in an incredible amount of time and effort as a result. They contacted me before the draw and worked their tails off on the hunt thus far......I didn't give them much, but i helped as much as i could simply because i think that service and kindness play a part in this equation as well as integrity....

berry, That's a fair and honest answer. I see your point of view and even agree with it. I can also see that a good portion of those that are contacting you overestimated their abilities when they drew the tag and underestimated the difficulty of finding a trophy elk. Now they are in a pickle and are desperate for any help they can get.

Hey I feel your pain. I know a place where there are at least half a dozen 400" bulls and only a 15 minute walk from pavement. But if your half dead twice removed uncles left nut shoots a measly little 400 inch bull how will he ever kill a beeeg juan?

PW,
I know what kind of bull you're holding out for! It'll be good.
Good luck now or later. Either way, you're having fun!

RE: Wasatch HELP?

Heck Zeke, Even with all the boot time I've been putting in, I haven't seen anything close enough to shoot at without giving my Mathews a big fat hernia, so there's very little holding out going on here :) If I didn't have the other two hunts as a back-up I'd be getting real nervous. I'm already a little nervous but I do expect these next 4 weeks should be good times for all.

RE: Wasatch HELP?

Well bro, good luck and if my daughter scores before you do I'll send up a flare. I might be able to help out, if you want.

Zeke

RE: Wasatch HELP?

Thanks Zeke, I'd love the help and never turn it down. The same goes here if I get lucky and score first. After today I pretty much have the next 3-4 weeks off work if needed. Thats if my feet and old knees hold up .

I understand that your daughter will now be coming from the northern California blacktail country instead of wonderful windy Wyoming for her hunt. Tell her good luck. I can't wait to see all the elk pics show up on MM this next month.

RE: Wasatch HELP?

Everyone with this tag better hold out for a 400+" bull, if you can't kill one of those on the last day your a sad sorry excuse of a hunter!!!!!

littlebeaver.jpg

RE: Wasatch HELP?

The way I measure things all my elk are over 400".
I may not be a good hunter but I'm damn creative with a tape! LOL

Besides, 400" are in every drainage and on every hill. You should know that BB. Just listen to some of the stories about all the huge bulls and you'll learn something. haha

Zeke

PS: If any of you are having trouble getting your bulls to score over 400" just call me for a measuring tip or two.

Today's tip: add the 6th point lenght.

RE: Wasatch HELP?

Tomorrows tip have something to do with an extra mass measurement zeke or is that the outside spread credit plus beam length?

littlebeaver.jpg

RE: Wasatch HELP?

Hey, don't give out all my tips at once! (but you're correct, as usual)

I'll elaborate on how to properly get the "extras"....later.

Zeke

RE: Wasatch HELP?

I've been lookin and I aint seen no elk. I even bought one of the High Definition 85 mm scopes so I don't have to leave the comfort of my truck or 4 wheeler. I think it's broken because I haven't seen no tan hair in it.

It's always an adventure!!!

RE: Wasatch HELP?

LOL
Just follow the crowds.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

RE: Wasatch HELP?

I found a bull last night that I think I could get to score 400" but I'd have to use every trick in my bag including adding inside AND outside spread!!!!!

Well...OK..... he was a solid 280" bull, if you must know the truth.
My daughter is looking for something a little bigger.

The bulls bugles quite early in the afternoon but never really cranked it up. I think they were waiting for the moon.

Good luck to all.
See ya all in 10 days or so.....after the hunt.
