With Wyoming starting the points system last year for deer what do you think of area102. By the picutres in that big buck contest post it doesn't seem to produce any better then eastern Montana. Are there better areas in the State. I know it will take a few years (IN my case and with my luck probably 20) to start seriously being able to plan on getting a tag but are there better areas to be setting my sites on? Just wondering or are people just not bothering to enter that contest?

Stick with 102 if you what a big buck it might be on a down turn right now but it will be back COULD be that 5 yrs ago it didn't have a good fawn crop and it showed up this year in the bucks now next year might be different.

I asked...there was a few on here that drew but no
one talking!
102 is just one I put in for every year!!To me Colorado will be better choice for next few years
just need to find a few areas in "all" western state and
start building pts!
good luck!

The fawn survival rate in 102 is great. There is hardly any winterkill in that unit. it doesn't get enough snow, and theres plenty of winter range. Very rarely do you find any deer that died because of the winter.

What is 102's problem is the management by the Wyoming Game and Snake. They keep increasing the tags down there. Why? Because they are managing for opportunity (number of hunters) and not trophy quality. They are doing this with all the deer and elk areas.

It used to be a great unit but not anymore. It's probably too late for it now. Game and Snake decided to mess up 102 since they already have region G and H.

If you want a unit where you can kill a 24" crab clawed buck then 102 is your unit. If not, research some more and find a better unit.

I live in 102 and do not put in for it. I know A LOT of hunters that way now. We've all found other units that produce great bucks with better draw odds than 102. There still are hidden units other there, you just got to do some research. Buying the Huntn' Fool and other publications isn't going to do it.

i just don't want you guys to put in for that hunt with dreams of 30" bucks or 180 class bucks. But hey if you draw i'll tell you anyplace i've seen some big bucks. I spend a lot of time down there coyote hunting. Good luck,

EL

I live in area 270 in Montana. Probaly the best in the state. Just can't draw the Damn permit. If someone is willing to trade info send me a PM.

My buddies drew 102 this year, first time ever putting in. They contacte YH, and I know they said his information helped a lot. Hey Ernesto, did you ever make it out hunting with Aarron?

Anyhow, they said the hunt was unbelievable! Seen more deer then they have ever seen, and they hunt WY every year on private land, this was all public. They ended up shooting 25" bucks, but missed a monster over 30". Out of 6 guys, 5 got bucks in the 25" range and one guy came home empty handed looking for that bomber 30+ incher he missed.

Hogwild,
I wanted to go out with Aaron and his crew but I work a lot of hours right now because of the oilfield boom. I also wanted to go out with Nvrenuf but i pretty much worked the whole season. Only had enough time to go shoot a lesser animal than a mule deer, an elk. hahahaha

I tried to help out everyone that contacted me. its a pretty big unit so i focused every different group in a different area that way they didn't crowd each other.

I'm glad aaron and them got some nice bucks, could you shoot me an email with some pics?

Maybe with some coaxing we could get Nvrenuf to post his pics of his buck....

YH is right on.What's even worse though,is it looks to me like the good gene pool is beginning to be shot out of there. There are so many 3x4 and 2x3 bucks out there it's scary.I'm talking big mature 25"-28" 2x3,4 yr old and older bucks.I'm not saying you won't find a 30"er there, but the area is way over-rated.I guide in that unit, and I video year 'round.Trust me,it's not what it used to be.Everyone wants a 4x4,so no one will shoot the 2x3's and 3x4's.Guess who gets to do all the breeding? It's not rocket science.2x3's produce 2x3's.I see the problem get worse every year.I don't really see the poor fawn crop being that big of a deal in this unit;as YH said, there is little to no winter kill.I totally agree it is a management problem, and it's not likely to get any better any time soon with Wyo G&F philosophy.

>YH is right on.What's even worse
>though,is it looks to me
>like the good gene pool
>is beginning to be shot
>out of there.

The drought is plaguing every area in the state. Nutrition has a significant impact on antler development. Apparently that's not the case in 102 because blame always gets thrown at the G&F...

Nontypical nailed it right on the head. I also live near area 102. I drew out in 2002 for deer there and opening day I saw about 20 good 3 point and a few 3x4 deer but not one descent 4x4. I spent about 5 different days hunting the area looking for a nice 4x4, since I've never shot one yet, and finially settled for a 3 point on the last day I had to hunt. I know there are still some good size deer there, One even got poached there this year, they're just getting harder to find.

That was a great buck that got poached. At least the poacher didn't get the rack.

Every year shed hunting i usually find a couple poached bucks. One of these days I'll catch someone poaching, then you guys might have to start a fund to bail me out of jail for beating the s.o.b. up lol. hehehhee

Triple_BB-Nutrition has absolutely nothing to do with genetics. No doubt the drought has played a significant role in antler GROWTH.However,it has nothing to do with antler POTENTIAL.Big deer were hard to find this year.We did get a 195,but the next biggest was a 172 out of 9 hunters. We should have gotten at least 3 maybe 4 over 180.I blame that on the drought-lousy antler growth. In fact,I can't remember a worse year for range conditions. That being said, the numbers of 2x3 and 3x3 bucks that are genetically that way;and will never be anything but;are growing each year. That is an alarming trend. We are shooting out the good genes. Now,I don't recall blaming G&F,but who controls hunters(besides ourselves)? Most guys don't want to take a 26" 2x3(myself included). How do we stop this trend?

Sounds like you need a management buck hunt. buck has to have a 3point on at least one side. Manditory harvest check in. Try it on a few units and see what happens. What does the Wyoming fish and game have to loose.

"What does the Wyoming fish and game have to loose"

their poor reputation...lol

I live close to 102, and spend a lot of time in the unit each year. I would have to say that the unit is over-rated, largely due to its publicity from "Huntin Fool", etc. While there are a handful of decent bucks in the unit(like all limited entry units), the vast majority of hunters will kill a low 20" buck each year. I have always applied for 102 because that is the area I know. I am looking elsewhere now.
