Father/Son in Montana Part II

My 13 year old son shot this real nice whitetail buck in central Montana. This occurred about 15 minutes after he filled his mule deer doe tag. While taking pictures, another whitetail buck walked up and looked like he wanted to fight my son's buck. We had to wave him off.

I shot this nice muley in southwest Montana with the coveted 270 tag. He measured 30 inches outside width and gross scored around 170.

Another excellent year hunting deer in Montana.

Nice deer. I'm curious as to how the other 270 hunters did this year.

I dug up your old post...you drew a 270 tag two years in a row? What luck! I hope you went out and bought some lottery tickets after drawing the second time, or atleast went to Vegas.

very nice...congratulations to the both of you...thank you for sharin' with the rest of us..

I figured I used up my luck and it would do no good to buy a lottery ticket.
Now I hope my son can get the 270 tag next year. That would be the ultimate.

Congrats! That would be fun stuff with the whitetails! They must have been rutty as all get up.

That mule deer is a dandy...I assume you got one last year? Was it as nice?

Nice in a different way. He was an 8x6 non-typical that scored around 190 gross (non-typical score).

You're right....the whitetails were really stupid in the rut. They must have been because my son's deer just stood there waiting to be shot, while looking at us. Plus a second one walked right up to us while we were taking pictures.

Yep...Very nice.

Are you from near the unit? It appears to me that not near the numbers of big bucks are coming out of there this year...I think the doubling of tags the last couple years has done its damage...probably poaching too...any thought?

I live in the Bitterroot Valley and I tend to agree with you that there aren't as many large muleys coming through this year. Perhaps it was from the lack of weather or maybe it is the doubling of tags to 150. But I think what is happening is the popular (easy) areas are getting hammered. As far as the 270 unit goes, I don't believe going to 150 is having an impact. There are so many bucks out there right now, you just have to hike away from the roads to see the really good ones. I'll have to ask the biologist what he thinks.
