Mulie Mount Suggestion

I took my mulie to the taxidermist yesterday and am having second thoughts about the position I ordered. My deer has a narrow rack but nice and tall tines. They had one on display there that had an upright shoulder mount with the ears forward. I like the idea of positioning the ears back or front to take the narrow look away. But I got to thinking neck upright and ears back might not look natural. What is your guy's suggestion? Most of my mounts are semi-sneak, maybe I should just do that.

The buck I took in 05 wasn't the widest either 24". I realy like the postion of the ears. It's on page two under "got my mount back". Good luck.

You will like the ears cocked back on your buck. My buddy does a lot of mounts with the ears cocked slightly back. It sure brings a deer to life. I also like the mounts that are slightly turned one way.

Maybe a hard turn would help show the forks from the side and not accent the narrow spread as a front view would.

What you've specified will (in all likeyhood) be just fine! Look at a lot of taxidermy mounts and order what you want. And don't discount your taxidermists opinion either.

Just thought I would put in my two bits here. I do a lot of mule deer mounts every year and in my opinion an upright mount is my very dead last choice. I would recomend a semi sneak, or a wall pedestal of some sort before I would go with an upright.
Ears back, or one ear slightly back and one all the way back will normally make a narrow rack look it's best.
Narrow bucks have a tendency to get blocked out by the big ears on a muley.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-14-06 AT 12:19PM (MST)[p]Don't know if this will help or not, but here are a couple of pics of bucks mounted on McKenzie upright forms. The buck on the right is mounted in the type of pose that you chose, both ears back. The buck on the left has one forward, and one back. I also included a field pic so you could see what the buck on the right looked like. He is only 22" outside. I really like the way the mount turned out.

I think I would go with the ears back and the head turned somewhat. It will show the forks more like redrabbit stated. I shot a nice little 4X4 this year and that was what I was going to do. But I ended up going with the european mount. Your buck looked a lot like mine did. I posted pictures of mine last month.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-14-06 AT 02:03PM (MST)[p]I have always liked wall pedestals rather than flat-backed mounts. They seen to give a little more life to a form rather than just a dead head on the wall. I like at least 1 ear back on most large-eared game...especially ones with narrow racks.

Obviously you want the best pose for the particular antlers that are on your buck. You may want to have someone hold the antlers and take several photos from different angles in the particular location you will be hanging your mount. The more turn you can put into a pose of a narrow-racked buck the less apparent width will be and more apparent tine length. Usually tall, narrow racks look a little better upright to show off their height. I have always felt that low-wide racked bucks tend to look better in the sneak.

If your taxidermist lives close make sure that he gives you a call before putting the cape on the mannikan. If you don't like the particular pose or mannikan you can always change it. He may even let you take the antlers/mannikan home with you to hang in the spot you have picked out. It is usually a matter of preference so make sure you get your buck mounted in the pose you like rather than listening to someone else!

ken,

i dropped off my colorado buck earlier this week too. i got the full sneak with the ears pinched back with a slight head turn. i really like the sneak (full or semi) myself.

I prefer upright over the sneak / semi-sneak. It makes the animal look more alive imo.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-15-06 AT 04:55PM (MST)[p]I took a tall, narrow buck this year too. I am going full sneak on it. I requested that the antlers be straight up as much as possible, to feature their heigth. I am having a turn to feature its stronger side. I had a full upright done on my last year's wide buck. Really, I feel the sneak is best for narrow bucks. If it is good and tall, I would not worry too much about the ears hiding it. That is more of a problem with narrow short racks.

I'll cast my vote for the pedastel mount. Very unique and adds extra character. Definitely would suggest turning the head to accentuate the forks. Also think about where you are going to hang it when you decide left or right turn. Not a bad problem to have trying to figure out how to get your trophy mounted!

This is my buck from 2005, not real wide, 24". I too would cast my vote for a pedastel mount. Top picture was taken straight on from the wall, second almost looking straight on. The turn is heavy enough that it shows off the strong left side and also the crown on the right front forks. I think the ears turned out great aswell. Just like I asked for. Hope this helps.

Another suggestion is to look at the various taxidermy companies' web sites. They usually show several mounted examples of each style of form they offer. Ask your taxi which company he uses and check their website.
