Pahvant bulls

Utahelk1, I was down on the unit a lot during the archery season. Saw a few bulls but nothing over 330. I they were just starting to bugle well the last week of the archery season. I have had some trail cameras out all summer in different parts of the unit and have not captured anything big on film. I did notice with all the extra water the deer and elk are very scattered. The Fillmore weather station has recorded a record water year with over 48" of moisture. Average is around 34" for the water year, October to October. Good luck to you.

I saw a pic of a nice archery bull last week. I'll try to get it forwarded to me and post.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-22-11 AT 11:10AM (MST)[p]Yeah. I have only seen a few pictures of some bulls coming off of there. Nothing over 360. They were talking the opening morning and a little the third day but not much since then. Its been a rough go for the rifle hunters. There are some big bulls on the unit but they aren't talking. The Beaver has produced some great bulls so far. Hopefully someone posts something up from the beaver. I think that unit is the best or second best unit in the state of Utah.

Good Luck Utahelk1. Should be better then the archery and rifle. They werent bugling very good on the archery hunt when I was down there Keep us posted

Its been a tough year on the pahvant. The heat has certainly not helped the tag holders. It may be a great year to be holding a muzz tag.

I was down there for the opening, they were screaming down there.I saw a 392 bull come out on the south end. I saw 3 bulls that would go 360 +.

My friends wife shot one Friday night. While she was shooting, 2 bulls kept fight while she was shooting. The bulls are hot they are calling, like crazy.

I hunted the archery hunt and it was tough! I missed a wopper bull we put at around 390 on the south end. I put a perfect stalk on him in his bed with his cows. Snuck within 50 yards and missed when he stood up. Being the first bull I've ever even pulled my bow on I missed. No excuses tho since i had several minutes to calm myself and i'd been making that shot all year long. I shot about 30 arrows from 50 and 60 the next morning and all were good. Who knows waht happend :( Almost had another shot at about 35 yards but unable to get through the debris.
2nd to last day to hunt.....my dad and I sat on a wallow and had a unique 5 point (with a 24" whale) come in and wallow for about 15 minutes before I double lunged him at 45 yards. That same morning I was within range of 3 6x6 bulls, one was really nice, but unable to get a shot off in the thick cover. good times. Very hard year but was able to pull something off and make the 12 years worth something. got another good 20+ years before i'll get another chance in utah unfortunately.

Here is a link to the video of the bull i ended up shooting.

It wasn't super hot. Prob low 80's that day. We figured we may as well sit somewhere besides in camp and this was in between camp and where we were goin to go that evening. The elk were strange down there. They would bugle Alright but we couldn't call anything in. Even when we were within 60-70 yards of a bugling bull with cows they would all scatter. Cows one way and bull the other. Or we couldnt pull the bull 5 yards to clear the brush for a shot. Normally when we work elk they come back to check it out or to kick some tail. Nothing. Thats when we decided to just stalk that one i missed like a deer instead of try to work him. It worked and I was able to get a shot. Tough to get over that one haha. It was a very different hunt for us. Good times with my dad tho for sure!!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-02-11 AT 03:20PM (MST)[p]I spent some time down there this year and was surprized at the lack of bulls I could find during the summer. Canyons that I could see 10-15 bulls in everytime last year, were almost totally desserted this year. It was a wierd year, but I did find a few bulls.

The first bull I found this year was huge. I had a new digiscoping system that I couldn't get used to and the footage turned out crappy. But it was well over 1000 yards off too.
Look very closely for the bull and watch him really close. He is a BIG bull. He is at the bottom of the screen. And yes he had 60 cows in July.

Here are a bunch of other little clips I put together of other bulls I found this year. The one bull that is on here several times I would guess in the 340-350 range. I would have taken him with a bow for sure.

Here is a video I took of a huge herd of cows. Count how many calves are in there! That's a really good sign for the Pahvant.

I can't get enough of that place after my hunt last year. It's a fun unit for sure!
