I know we all know someone who tells a tall tale.
What is the most blown up story you guys have heard?

I know a guy here in town that every year he see's 10 or 12 30 inchers in herds before the bow season. Then he gets a few shots at them on the bow, muzzle, and rife hunts, never gets one though.
Every year he also sees at least half a dozen bulls that are going to score between 400 and 420.

If I didnt know the guy and have hunted with him before I would think this guy knows where all the big boys hang, but actually his 30 inchers are more lik 22-24, and his 400 plus bulls are more like 340 bulls.

Anyone else know guys like this?

rumple

Oh yeah and last year he told me of a group of bulls that he found, about 20 of them and they shed in the same spot every year, he has watched them for a few years now. He tried to go get the horns once, but was chased away by a bear and just hasnt gone back yet. I call BS!

I saw a picture of an elk that scored 575" shot with his bow in the Selway.................................:) :)

that sounds just like a guy I know, were do I start.

Well there is the 300 LB Beaver that he suposedly saw, He has clamed to have killed a world record black bear that was stolen out of the back of his truck at a groscery store.

He told me he killed the new ut state record Typ muley that was 40" wide but could not produce a photo, he said he shot it on the last day and blew bone out of it with six shots from 600 yards, where it then ran 1 1/2 miles before dieing. And the reason he dont have the horns was because a gamewarden is holding it hostage from him. WTF

But this one takes the cake, While me and a buddy was comeing off the mountain in early july he calls up and starts bragging about how he had found a 42inch nontypical and several other huge bucks on his scouting trip he was just getting back from, and he had video of all of them. We tell him that we are going to come over and take a look to which he responds that his camra might not work cause he droped it on his way out of the hills. We get there and he pulls out his camera and makes us look through little eye hole to whatch his video, any ways the first buck I seen on there was a vary popular buck on several diferent hunting videos. Instead of going out and finding some bucks he set at home and videoed the tv as he played several different hunting videos and peaced together his own video. Also all the bucks in the video were full growen and about ready to shed there velvet, this was early july the bucks still had more than a month to grow.

And thats not even half of his storys.

I worked with a guy once who saw SIX 40-inch bucks running together.

I know just the type. The guys that really get me are the ones that when you are talking about a hunting or scouting trip they where always "there last weekend and saw monster bucks running rampant. I don't know why you didn't see or kill one."
Or sometimes they'll pull out the old "Oh, I was up there yesterday and let that buck (the one you were telling about trying to get a shot at) walk."
Beleive me, guys like this have been on every mountain, everywhere, ahead of you, and saw every deer there was to see and passed them all up, or found a way to not kill them. Anything from a bumped sight, to being winded by a monster buck after letting a stinky fart. These are typically the guys that can't produce any field photos of their kills either, because their camera is always broken or forgotten.

Give me a break!!

I just don't get it. I hunt for own enjoyment and couldn't care less what others think about my hunting experience, know how, success, or whatever. I just can't fathom how these guys feel the need to just plain lie so that they look cool to other hunters. Escpecially when their stories are so obviously false that it makes them look like a much bigger idiot than if they had just told the truth.... "I went out and didn't see much." No shame in that, we've all told that same story 1000 times and at least it's the truth.

I have a neighbor that always seems to see a bull elk lean his head back and scratch his a$$ with his antlers. Same story every year.

My neighbor goes out to the Bookcliffs all the time and he knows where all the 40 inchers are. He sees em'! He KNOWS! There are quite a few of them. *insert eye roll here*

LAST EDITED ON Jan-02-07 AT 02:20PM (MST)[p]I have a buddy who supposedly has seen two 40 inchers in the last two years,........this coming from a guy who hasn't shot anything bigger than a 2 point for umpteen years and who's area I have yet to see anything bigger than a 20 inch buck. Also one year out hunting we heard him shoot and asked him on the radio if he got one and he said he just shot a pinehen, we found out later that he shot a tree that he thought was a three point buck with the sun in his eyes....talk about not wanting to hunt with him again could have been me with a branch behind my head.

This post is hilarious. I've met dozens of guys (and a few ladies) with these stories over the years. I've noticed there's one common thread in many of their experiences. They often know of a secret canyon with a 48" buck or a 10x10 bull and the only reason they haven't killed it is because there's some dangerous animal (mountain lion, grizzly, wolves) preventing them from doing so or some insurmountable circumstance like "can't miss that much work or my wife's cancer...". I usually have some fun and offer to risk my life to hunt such a magnificent animal or quit my job, whatever it takes. They never catch on and usually grow more serious about their story as they think they've got a sucker on the line. I keep it up as long as I can stand it.

There was a big buck contest here in SE Idaho and the guy that was running it mentioned he helped some "!@#$%ing Californian" drag a 40" buck to his truck on the late hunt a few days before and the "chicken !@#$ wouldn't enter it in the contest." He didn't know my good friend held one of the few resident tags and camped next to the holder of the non-resident tag (the Californian) My friend knew the buck the hunter had killed was like 25" wide so he drove down to the store where the liar worked and confronted him. The guy did the fish trying to get out of the story but my friend just let him dig himself in deeper. Justice was served. A few years before that, the same guy told me he had killed a 40" buck. When I invited myself over to his house to see it, he gave me his little canned answer: "My son took the rack to school to mount it on a plaque in woodshop but someone stole it out of his locker." Hilarious.

I also know I'm usually talking to a green deer hunter when he tells about the 40" buck he's hunting, usually in a general tag area where he can ride his 4-wheeler within 200 yards of his bed. You gotta feel sorry for these guys a little.

Bighorn, that was my question as well, I was just going to recommend a search on this site for cASS.

Someone I know says he has seen a 900 pound Giant Sea Turtle roaming the beaches in Humboldt Bay close to the old Nucular Power Plant. Seems a bit far fetched if you ask me. LOL

LMAO!!!!! Now this is funny but oh so true. Heck I can name a bunch of guys like this. I was guilty this year of a 170+ buck (telling a bud prior to death) I was hunting. Well reality was he only went 162. But I do have a few buds who constantly see 30/350 inchers in a certain area, never kill one, and never have any pictures.
One guy was expounding on the huge whitey he just killed 20" inside spread, 14" tines, blah blah blah. I said lets go check it out and headed to his house before he could make an excuse. Pulled the tape out of my door, and what do you know 15" outside and the LONGEST G tine was 6". I said "heck get you better get your tape because mine says he is half the size you said he was". He got all kinds of mad at me. We still talk hunting and things are fine but he never has mentioned any animal again. Dang Monkey Spanker ha ha
Here is another nice line. "Oh he was a huge 4/6 point, biggest buck/bull I ever saw" Question - "How deep were his forks/length of tines, any eye guards, etc. etc.?" Reply - "Oh I don't know but he had to have been a (XYZ) he was so big" Sound like something you have heard before.
The only people I believe are the ones where the actual horns or real photos back up their story.
Funny post.

This is very funny... We all know a few of those people. I was "that guy" for a few year's in our families hunting camp. Now picture this, a hunting camp with primarily guys that are not in good shape and guy's that just like to sit around and BS. Me, the one guy who get's out and hikes the rough stuff sees; a bull moose, cougar and get's a shot at two of the nicest bucks that group has seen there in a couple years. Of course I got the BS treatment, -doesn't bother me, I knew it was 100% because if they we're out there where I was, they'd have seen the critters also, but they chose to sit around and BS instead and sleep in late. Even some of the TV yahoo's plainly exaggerate quite a bit. Tred is one of the worst, he is always overstating fish and game size, it's funny if you watch him fish or hunt with another guide, they will almost always correct him when he tries to guess the size of an animal...

Have a friend like that. Actually several. One guy said he was presouting the antelope area he drew for in mid-Aug. Saw 2 17" bucks, together, mid day, at 800yds (more or less). Well this is in WY and not a known trophy area. At mid day it is over 70 degrees with lots of heat waves. Also, he said if you get drawn for a late season elk hunt you can/will kill a 400"er.

from the "Heartland of Wyoming"

I hate it when people exaggerate. That's why I always understate the size of the animals I see and kill. Nobody has ever claimed ground shrinkage with me. I also back up all of my stories with live footage and include it in all of my award-winning videos. Especially when you're a world-famous hunter, guide and movie-maker like me, you have to be believable or people won't believe you anymore and you'll lose your credibility. And, we all know, when you lose your credibility, people don't put a lot of credit in your stories...or your bank account...anymore.

You guys must have run into my brother-in-law. A couple of years ago, he called me in May and said he had been out looking for shed antlers and came across a herd of bull elk that had at least two 350 bulls in it. When I asked him how they grew that much antler since shedding a month earlier, he asked "What do you mean?" There's your sign!

He is also the guy who claimed he shot a buck right between the eyes as it was running straight away from him. Not sure how he did that.

Glad to know I am not the only one who has to deal with a dipstick at family gatherings. He is the laughing stock of the gatherings, and doesn't even know it.

You guys have some funny stuff here. Thanks for sharing.

Happy Hunting!

Brian,

I know it seems far fetched. I don't blame you for doubting my claim. I once got a great photo of the beast, but the strap on my camera broke and ended up in the saltwater. We all know what saltwater does to cameras.:(

And then one time during a turtle hunt I had my sights right on his neck. Just as I pulled the trigger, a Great White shark bumped my 8' pram. Dang near knocked me out of the boat! I think it was the turtle gods giving me a warning, so I left the area, and haven't been back since.

I don't care if anybody believes me or not!

Got a buddy I hunt antelope with. I have yet to see his buck from a few years ago, but he said it was a monster. Huge bases, 17", and the whole enchilada. Definately a book buck.

This fall we went out and I shot a 16" buck that he thought would make book. Knowing what it actually was (a 14" average-sized antelope), I asked him how they score antelope. He didn't have an answer. My next question was what the minimum score was. He didn't know that either, but he was still sure I had a whopper...

That's a good story, but here is my favorite. I took a "friend" out to a secret spot of mine. To access the area, you just pull over to the shoulder at a random place on a logging road and bushwack across a creek and up the other side. One of those places where you never see a soul. Loaded with deer.

We saw a pretty decent 4 pt whitey, but my buddy couldn't get a shot. Anyway, he was really excited about the buck, as he hadn't seen anything bigger than a spike all fall. I had to work the next day, so "we" couldn't go back and chase the buck again, and my "friend" said that he wouldn't hunt the spot without me; he planned on hunting somewhere else with a different friend of his.

I called him the next night to see if they had gotten anything. This next part, I still cannot believe. His combination of balls and stupidity still baffle me to this day.

Ryan said that he went hunting with a friend of his, Dave. It seems that Dave picked him up and they started driving up into the mountains. 27 miles later, Dave pulled off at exactly the same spot I do and took my friend down and across the creek at the same spot I did. It seems Dave hunts exactly where I do!

Anyway, Dave shot a 180 but they didn't have a camera. Funny because I've fished/hunted with my friend for 6 years and have never seen him without a camera. I just cannot believe that he had the balls to not only take someone to my spot, but to make up the bullshit story and tell it too me!!!

I don't care much about whitetails anymore, so I wasn't too pissed, but it's the principle of such things that bother me. Needless to say, he'll never go with me to my muley areas.

Yeah I know some dumb blowhard who keeps saying he is gonna shoot my quad with his 50 cal. What a loser!

I got a buddy who is the worlds greatest steelhead fisherman. I had to work on one of the days he wanted to fish behind my house, so I wasn't witness to the 21# native he claims he caught off the white rock in the upper drift. He has my attention with the 21# comment and I say lets take the boat tomorrow and float the river. He says ok and we fish down to the white rock and I ask where the pig was layin and he says just below the white rock, my sand shrimp is already there when I get a good bite and set the hook and play this litlle 7# dark buck up to the boat, I look at my buddy and say looks like he lost alittle weight since yesterday. I got a nice FU for catchin him in his horse shiat story.

And some of our wives wonder why we like to hunt and fish so much? Its because we get some good entertainment from our buddies.

I have a friend that Ive taken hunting and fishing. They are pretty good spots where you can see some decent bucks and catch some nive fish, the other day we were talking to some of his coworkers and he has the nuts to say that its a good thing HE has taken ME to his hunting and fishing spots so that I can have some fun!

Well I almost stopped hunting and fishing with him but its fun to still go out there and cath him in his lies and watch him stumble through his story and then call him on it.

Please, please let Cass come on here and tell us about the guy he knows that has great stories like these!

A herd of lions. . .thats the best by far.

hopefully someone on here gets to meet a labrum from the basin. shawn isnt bad but his brother kenny is the worst....

I really love my father-in-law but I just have to smile every time he tells me about the 36" tall by 40" wide 400" typical mule deer he saw in Idaho. I alwasy say "Wow, 400", that is 45" inches higher than the world record, and you say this thing is a typical?"

Also this year I shot a buck that we had seen while together on the opening day. I passed on it that day and he didn't have a tag. My father-in-law was sure it was 28-30" inches wide after I didn't shoot it, but when I shot it 3 days later and it only measured "23 it suddenly wasn't the same buck anymore. He means well, I just have to smile to myself when he tells me about big deer.

Here is another that happened the other day. A friend and I were out blacktail hunting and I hear a shot from his muzzleloader I head in the general direction and about 20 minutes later hear another shot I finally cath up to him and he has a little buck on the ground. I ask what the 1st shot was at and he says a monster buck that was out past his ears and a clean miss. He heads for the truck to get a pack frame while I skin and quarter the buck guess what I found, yep a bullet in the gut and one in the neck. What a monster!

I recently heard of a nice 20" antelope buck killed by a 12 year old in Montana, several 40" muleys in the Bridgers and a 60" shiras moose in SW Montana. Wow, we've got some doozies, too bad I can't seem to find them......EVER!

Awesome thread!

Go to the airport in Hermosillo and listen to some of the stories that the "outfitters" tell. Its absurd! 3 or 4 years ago I had a mexican outfitter show me a picture of a big deer that they took the previous season, said that it was one of the better deer that they took. Not only was it one of my hunters deer that I was the guide on but I was in the damn picture, the guy actually showed me a picture with me in it. I am still scratching my head about that one!

My mom's ex, we'll just call him "Chuck", since every year we would go hunting over the mountains to our spot, a guy named Paul from this camp down the road would come by and ask for "Chuck"?? Wasn't his name, but old Paul was always a little plastered. Anyways, "Chuck" would drive around like a madman road hunting at 50mph. He'd always see more game than anyone though and would get downright pissed if anyone said different. To his credit he was a fishing guide and a good fisherman. The whole hunting thing though was always a big tall tale whith him. I just don't see how anyone could drive the roads like that and see game all the time.....

Post # 33 from huntsonora has got to be one of the best I've read. I love this thread. C'mon people, there's got to be more tall tales out there to share.

About once a year I have a family gathering at my house and the men folk usually end up going into my trophy room to visit. A certain individual(broken record) always tells me the same thing every year "now these are nice bucks and all, but about ten years ago I seen a buck up bs crk that would put all these here bucks to shame"! For crying out loud this guy has never hunted outside of his home state of Washington(first clue) and I have 4 bucks that go over 190(second clue) and he has never killed anything over 24"(third clue). I would rather star on Springer as to go through that again and trust me that aint ever gunna happen!

Hey guys, just talked to my buddy tonight and he was asking me if I had been out looking for any elk. I told him I havent been out yet I havent found anytime. Well he went on to say that out near where he works there is a great looking buck! A big four point, says it has to be at least 33" wide. Its running with about 40 does and hes the only buck!

Wow I wonder why noone else who works out there has seen him. Surely a buck that big and wide would have the grape vine going and every one in town would be out there glassing him.

Or could just be another story, guess Ill never know unless I go see him for myself.

rumple

Can I just keep adding to this everytime I talk to the guy?

This weekend we were talking about how real soon the deer are going to start dropping, and he went on to tell me that last year he watched two big four points drop. He saw the horns fall off their heads, the one still had one antler on and so he didnt want to scare them off, he was just going to wait and see when it dropped.

He said he watched the herd of deer kicking around the antlers in the snow for over 2 hours.

That must have been alot of deer to kick them around in the snow for two hours.

Hes a great guy, just needs to not over do it so much.

I used to work with a guy who has done it all. He once shot an elk at 1200 yards on the run with his 338 and dropped it in its tracks. He also shot a 250 inch mule deer but it jumped the fence into some private property, and the land owner wouldn't let him go get it. Then 2 years later he went back to the land owners house and the deer was hanging in his living room. Thats just the tip of the iceberg. This guy is full of it

lol how bout this one ,,,, guy at work likes to shoot crows, he told us one day that the way he does it is he on purpose shoots one in the wing so that it cant fly and acts like a live decoy and that way draws in more birds, and his other one was that he shot one in the head (just enough to give it a concussion) so that it walked around on the ground sorta confused and acted like a decoy,,,, when he told that one i couldnt help it i totally lost it right in front of him, LMAO i had this picture in my head of a crow walking around on the ground holding his head with his wings going OMG that hurts LOL

I recently heard from a guy that claimed 8 guys hunted a particular unit in CO on public land this year and 5 of them killed bucks over 200. I said, were they hunting the back country? He said no, they were road hunting. Still trying to swallow that story as I have hunted this unit and while there are 200 inch deer killed in this unit 5 200 inch deer from a party of 8 road hunters is hard to believe.

Mike

I hunted with some guys a few years ago that every 4 point buck was 30 inches. It was actually kind of exciting. LOL

Note: According to check station data gathered on the Kiabab and regions G&H in Wyoming less than 6% of all bucks checked were 30 inches or wider.

tylercreek2, I hate to defend a BS'er, but his first story about winging crows is possibly true. I've only hunted them once and that was while in Alaska. My host told me to shoot the first one in the wing for the same reason. He managed to wing one and it did indeed keep the crows from leaving. Not very ethical, but it does work if a guy can manage to only hit the wing. Now your buddy's story about the head shot, I'd have a pretty tough time believing that one too.

huntsonora, are you the same guy that got into an argument with an idiot hunting agent over at AR a few years ago? The outfitter was claiming that he had a place full of 30"+ bucks that would score over 180 up to 200+ easy, somewhere in Texas. I actually called the guy on the phone and quizzed him a bit on the bucks they actually killed. Let's just say it wasn't anywhere close to his claims. I still can't stand that guy and they still basically worship him over there at AR and his canned elk/buffalo hunts.

Gotta run I have a buddy I need to call down in Wyoming so he can give me his monthly dose of how all the elk, mule deer, whitetails, and bears are bigger in Wyoming. Did I mention he missed a couple 400" bulls with his crossbow this year and passed up easy shots on 350" bulls because he was holding out. Naturally he was hunting an open unit. Gee why do states even have limited or trophy units when there are 400" bulls and 40" wide mule deer everywhere in Wyoming.=? ;-)

BD, thats eggzactly what you would be doing, defending a bs'er , but thats ok is your privledge, FYI those 2 lil bitty ah er examples are but the tip of the iceburg whith this guy,,,, and i was in attendance during both examples and well it kinda didnt go the way he sorta relateded it to other people,,, but again oh well to each his own, Barney Fife was'nt a bad guy you know ,,,,

MOST OF THE PEOPLE HERE ON MM FIT IN THIS CATEGORY! You all know who you are too!

My brother inherited a little sign that hung on my grandpa's fireplace that says

"Welcome hunters, fisherman and all other fancy liars."

Seriously though, like eelgrass I too have came in contact with a giant turtle - the mythical beast nearly ended my existence too. THEY DO EXIST - AND THERE ARE MANY MORE THAN WE THINK!

LAST EDITED ON Jan-19-07 AT 08:39PM (MST)[p]when I firsted starting hunting deer (I was 13) I hunted mostly on my parents acreage. I kept seeing the same buck for over a week, but could never kill him. My friends at school had to listen to me ramble everyday about this gigantic buck that was alluding me. I finally killed the buck towards the end of the season and showed it to some and brought pictures to the others. It was a 3x3 with a 12" spread. You guys should see the pictures, that poor deer. As I said, it was my first deer. The pic shows me standing over it with my gun and the deer sliced all the way up to the jaw, round patches removed from all it's knee joints (I thought scent glands were on all four legs back then), and the right leg in the shape of a backwards "L" as when the bullet exited it broke the leg. As gruesome as it sounds, I have never been more proud of a buck, even though it wasn't as gigantic as I thought.
