Gunnison Area Archery Tips

I am busy researching an upcoming archery mule deer hunt and I thought I would ask for a little help here. High country mule deer are new to me and I have a lot to learn.

Have any of you hunted the West Elk Wilderness Area in unit 54(for elk or mule deer). If so, perhaps you could offer some insight into where I might be best served on a backpack-style archery hunt. Feel free to send me a private message or email if you have any tips. General comments about the traffic or deer in this Wilderness area will also be a big help. I have spent a lot of time staring at topo maps of this area and am still not settled on a spot to scout for this summer. All I know is that I like the looks of the place!

Perhaps there are others who have not hunted this specific area, but maybe somewhere nearby in the Gunnison Basin. If so, maybe you have some general thoughts on where the deer are in late August. Should I only focus on the 11,000-12,000' zone? Are the mature bucks always a mile or more from hiking trails? How high would you try to camp? Etc?

Maybe this thread could teach several of us a thing or 2 about high country mulies. It does not have to be area-specific. Thanks in advance for any help you might offer.
