I got this back from the taxi this past summer but never posted any pics.

He's not the baddest buck on the block but I think the mount turned out nice.

I tried to throw in some close-ups to show the taxi's attention to detail (i.e. wet nose, ear tufts, eye ducts) but I don't think the pics did it justice.

It took over 18 months to get this guy back, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Sorry about the background in the pics...she won't let me hang it in the house along with the Europeans, panels, and birds.

(Resolution is not the best)

Really? What can I do to fix/complete it? I haven't noticed anything, but I can guarantee I'm on my way out to the garage to take a look...

Nice mount.

What Bambi is talking about is that brown stuff in the nose that looks like boogers. The inside of the nose should be black. Many taxis will take a litte more time and put an artifical septum in the nose, which looks very realistic. A lot of taxis don't, like yours, but he should have at least painted the inside of the nose. Congrats on the buck.

I beg to differ, the inside of the nose is NOT suppose to be black, check pictures of life deer and you will see, but I agree it could of been smoothed out a little more.

here is some deer nose pictures with good color, these are of life deer.

C'mon sealer.....you gotta put your foot down man.....that thing needs to go in the house. :) Nice buck, I think the mount turned out good also.

I think he did a good job! The inside of a mule deer's nose is close to black. Whitetail on the other hand do have a pink look in the back. I would would just touch that up with some darker color and he'll be perfect!

Congrats on a great buck and an awesome trophy. In my opinion that is not a very good mount job.Whoever caped the deer never left enough nose channel and the overall mount looks out of proportion. Why is there so much brisket left on,is this a new type of mount or soemthing you requested.

I am not trying to be a party pooper its just that there is so many people that can't spot a good mount from a p##s poor one.

As long as you are happy with it, who cares! However at first glance the ear edges are horrible, the eyes are not level, the nose needs lots of work, the ear muscles look bad, the mouth tuck is poor, and the finish job needs some more attention. But, as I said if you are thrilled with it, who cares.

Why do people always have to naysay?

The guy posts a picture of a mount that he is proud of and people just run it down.

sealer- I like it and if you like the mount then it really doesn't matter what the a$$holes that have responded to this thread think.

Sealer, great buck, don't mind these guys. They are the ones that give the rest of us a bad name. That deer looks great! i'll bet that if you looked at most of these guys mounts if they even have them that they might have a flaw or two also. That being said I am not a taxidermist nor an expert. Just felt like saying this site is far to good to rip someones trophey apart.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-09-07 AT 06:11PM (MST)[p]nice buck and the mount looks pretty good....but wish I could have seen this post about 5 years ago...I just turned in a buck to be redone as looking at it made me want to vomit. When I got it back the first time, like previously mentioned, I didn't know what to look for and thought it was good. Now that I know better and actually seeing some good ones I can't stand looking at so I took it back to another taxi...when it's all said and done I'll have over $1K into a single buck...makes me sick but lesson learned.

NOW IF YOU WERE TO TAKE YOUR FAVORITE LADY DOWN TO GET A NEW SET OF DD'S!!!

WOULD YOU LOOK FOR THE CHEAPEST PRICE???

THE ONLY bobcat THINKING YOU SHOULD CHECK THINGS LIKE THAT OUT!!!

Canoe and Borntohunt!!!!

I don't appreciate your guys comments toward me.My comments take nothing away from the buck as it is a great buck.I am simply trying to tell him it is a bad mount job so in the future he might know what to look for.I wish someone had done the same to for me before i had wasted my money on shi**y mounts that i just ended up cutting the horns out of.You pay the same money for a great mount as you do a crappy one so why not look around for a good taxi.I hate to see guys shoot a beautiful animal and then get a terrible mount done.If you think it looks bad now wait a year when the lips and eyes start peeling.

Sealer i appoligize if i offended you, it was not what i wanted to do.

Borntohunt...So you don't think i have any quality mounts...i could post pics of my mounts that would take your breath away.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-09-07 AT 07:09PM (MST)[p]Biggest thing is as long as your happy with it. Most people dont look at detail except a few people. You come on a hunting website and all will look for flaws. But you have people over and most will not notice things wrong. Most will look at horns before they see other things.
Do you have any field photos of this buck?
Here are a couple pics of a couple bucks I have. The buck on the right is the best mount job I have seen and I will push this Taxidermists work all day long. It is Intermountain Taxidermy in Twin falls Idaho. They did a awesome job and mounted it exactly how I specified it to be and the eye setting and ears and anything else on it looks perfect. The one on the left is a different story. Yours looks 100 times better than this one. But here is the first one.
414214.jpg

This second pic is the buck on the left of the first pic and you can see eyes cracking leather hanging out of the mouth and the ears where cut and never sewed up nose cracking and you cant even see into it at all. The deers right ear on the tip hair was missing and the guy just hot glued some on there. But at least your deer does not have all these defects. Here it is

Sealer, Nice buck, reach down feel the boys, once you confirm their presence just move the deer in the house. LOL Before I comment on the mount are you asking what others think about the Taxidermy work?

Muzzy125, I agree 100% with your comments. It had nothing to do with bashing anyone's trophy, but hopefully they can be educated and find a better taxidermist next time. I always expect and want my friends to be honest with me, regardless if it hurts. But like I said earlier, if you are happy with a mount then just enjoy it. I enjoy quality in my life, so anything less is not acceptable. As far as mounts, almost all commercial taxidermy has some flaws. Even most competion work has some kind of flaw, but the idea is to limit the flaws so that you really have to study a piece to find a problem, and that at first glance it looks good. I think it is a horrible thing when at first glance you see several problems with a mount. Shame on the taxidermist for delivering a bad mount to a customer. Shame on the custmer returning to have more work done. Sealer, hope I did not offend you in any way!

Thanks BBoy.

I would be happy to post some pics so everyone can pick them apart. But i would have to send them to someone, because i don't know how to do it.

Lots of animals are once in a lifetime animal for a hunter so why not try giving it the best mount job you can find so it can continue to look beautiful for years to come.

muzzy125, sorry if I offended you. I did not post anyones names nor point a finger to any one person. I can agree with much of what you are trying to say. It just gets old seeing posts get turned into rip sessions. I have been a memeber of MM since 2000 and just hate to see people treated poorly because they don't seem to know as much or have as much expirience or spend as many hours in the hills. Again I am not acusing you of any of these things. Just hope to help those like sealer or anyone else that is new to this site or the great sport of hunting big mulies. As mentioned I am no expert when it comes to taxidermy but I do love to look at trophey bucks I have quite a few myself, as I am sure you do. If you want a few pictures posted send them my way [email protected]. Again sorry if I came accross wrong. There is an underscore in the email address between the hunt and 1999.

The Taxidermist skill and many times skill costs a little extra. I use the same guy and will until he retires. Then I will go with who he suggests. The only issue I have ever had with the seven mounts was my fault. I wanted a larger form then the cape would fit, and the seam line is slightly visible in the hair and eyes barely cracked around the 5yr mark. My Taxidermist warned me it would happen and it did. Last years cost me $550.00.

I have always been a firm believer that you shouldn't throw out your opinion, especially a negative one, unless you are asked to do so. Negative comments are only going be one thing, NEGATIVE!

Sealer- Looks good to me bud, nice buck. What State is he from?I'm sure there aren't many mounts out there that some of these guys couldn't find flaws with. Thanks for posting the pic and don't let negative comments keep you from posting more. Gotta love those long tined 3 points. Congrats!

BTH no worries man and apoligy is excepted. And you are right i should not give my opinion unless it is asked. It just seemed since he was posting close up's to show the detail, that he was maybe asking for some feedback.

I 100% agree with you and i hate when guys run down eachother just to try to make themselves look good.Even though i try to spend everyday in the outdoors i feel i have lots to learn and with everyone's combined knowlede here at MM i feel we can all help eachother.I don't want to be known as the guy who run's down other people's trophy's because i feel all animals are trophy's in the hunter's eye who harvested them.

Thanks for the offer and i will send you some pics.

They wont be all mulies but i think they guys will like them. And then i can get some feed back on the quality of some of my mounts.

I learned the hard way also when it came to my first mount. I tried to go with a cheaper, faster guy. When I got it back I was happy with it, until I got my next one back from a "real" artist. Side by side the first one is awful; lips were not tucked, walleye vision (bulging), no detail in the nose, nostrils filled in with clay (no depth or septum), no facial features, overspray. It makes me sick cuz it's on a 79inch P&Y pronghorn and the mount does not do the critter justice. I now know what to look for. It's not just about throwing a cape on a form.
To me when I get a mount done it's about artistry, work ethic/ business practices and lastly price.

Congrats on a nice buck, I hope you are happy with it. It should serve as memories of a great animal and a reminder of the hunt.

Well guys these are a few of muzzy125's tropheys. Let me be the first to say congrats to the hunter they are both awsome animals. Again, I am no expert on the art of taxidermy but both look very real and professional to me. Hope everyone enjoys. And again congrats Jeff.

Muzzy125, I would have passed those critters up! NO, just kidding. Awesome deer and antelope!!!! Nice mounts!

Stud animals for sure. Can't see enough detail on the mounts to comment, but they look good in the potos.

Thanks for your kind comments and thanks BTH for posting them.Once i learn to post i will post a few more.Sorry i could not do any real close ups because my camera is not good enough quality. It is only a 2.3 megapixel that i use in my trailcam. The antelope was my first lope as we only get a tag every 8 years here in Alberta.Killed a good buck with bow but he still had milk on his lips so i never mounted him.lol The mule deer is going on 10 years old now.We are killing some great mule deer here in Alberta.I think my taxi is very skilled and would put him up against anyone in the world.I have a CBG Caribou,Brown Bear and a huge Wolverine in at the shop and will have to post when i get them back for you all to view. Take Care Jeff

Hey muzzy, where abouts in AB are ya? Medicine hat here. You sure are on the money about the mulies here the last few years, its been great. Archery season has definately been very kind to me the last 2 years. What taxidermist do you use? I go to Harvey Kay out of Maple Creek Sask. He does phenominal work.

Hey Myth,I am from Slave Lake which is 2 1/2 hours North of Edmonton..but grew up down south. We recently just started hunting the peace river area and have always hunted drumheller.Killed some great deer over the years.Alberta is quickly becoming a real hot spot for whitetail and mulies.Did you see that big whitetail in the back of the reg's this past fall??? You should post some pics of your bucks,i would love to see him. I hunted 37 days for elk and mulie with my bow this year, was awesome fun.We killed some real hog whitetails around home here this year.Average temp all November was -30 plus wind chill. ttyl Jeff

Wow...

I'll have to let my taxi know what everybody thinks. He's only been doing this for 35+ years but I know his hands are getting bad.

Dang, I really didn't think there would be that many issues with this mount. I'm completely picking apart my others now...

THX for the feedback either negative or positive.

Drew

Sealer, no need to take it personally, and I don't think anyone has an "issue" with your mounts. I think you are misunderstanding. You posted your mount, and I assume you wanted feedback on it. No one straight told you that you have a bad mount, because it isn't that bad, but I agree when some people say that there is something to be desired on that finished head. No need to take offense, people are simply offering some constructive criticism. Considering you have used the same taxidermist for your animals, maybe those who offered those "negative" comments are just trying to help you. Maybe try a new taxidermist on your next mount, then you will have something to compare to.

Just a thought, hope you don't take it the wrong way.
