I have already posted these pics a while ago and figured with all the critiqueing on mounts I would open myself up to some as well. This is the first buck I have had mounted and am not a pro. I would like to hear feedback. I am very happy with it and IMO think it was a great mount. Lets hear it!!!

I think that is a great looking mount! Nice buck. Thanks for sharing. My 2004 bull should be done anytime now, and Im excited to see how it turned out.

Good lookin' mount IMO. Nice buck too!!!

Well, first of all the buck is way too big! You should shoot the small bucks and leave the nice ones for everyone else. Other than that;
Where are you at and how much do you charge?
Awesome job in my opinion.

Maybe I confused some folks. I did not do this personally. I had it done by a professional and just wanted to hear feedback. After reading the other post I was curious if there was anything that I didn't see with my 1st mount.

Great mount but you might want to hang it somewhere else. The heat from your fireplace will dry out the cape really bad. I had my buck hanging over the fireplace too and the cape along the back of the neck split. Just a suggestion.

thnks for the suggestion. It is a gas fire place and we don't use it but once a month if that. Do you think that little use will still have the same effects?

Mind sharing who the taxidermist was? That is a very nice job and a handsome buck.

Nice Buck for sure. Based on what the pictures show I would put the mount at a 7 out of 10. I like the bunched skin at the base of the neck, and the front edge of each fore leg showing. I can't see the eyes, ears, horn bases, tear ducts very good to really make a fair judgement. The tear ducts look flat. I would expect them to be fully tucked in without being able to see the internal bottom. The nostril's are filled with putty, and again I would expect them to be fully installed, I have to look with a flashlight to see the back of the tear and nostrils on my mounts. For me having stuff fully done really makes the mount more lifelife. The front teeth showing was intended as they were obvsiously put in. If you wanted that for a reason then fine. The throat patch area looks flatter and cupped in then I have seen on both live deer and mounts, but again that may be something specific to your deer and desires. I have mine mounted in as close to the position natural appearence I shot them in. I have one with a pretty messed up cape due to all the fighting and abuse for the year. Guys say things about how messed up the cape looks, but that is exactly the way I wanted it.
I would agree with the direct heat issue. Normal heat is fine, but super close to a fire or heater outlet is not the best thing for a mound.

Great looking mount and a nice buck. I really like the wrinkle in the skin; looks natural. If you are going to keep this buck hanging where it is, or where ever it hangs for that matter, I recommend rubbing a little baby oil about once a year, all over including the nose and the ears. This helps keep these areas from drying out and adds some sheen to the hair.

kingfish.....I got an antelope above my Gas fireplace and have for probably 3-4 yrs. Think it'll be a problem? Also, got a ceiling light basically 12-18" away beating down on it all the time, will that hurt it eventually?

WACAT....I think I've said it before but I'll say it again....that's a great buck and a terrific mount!

Thnks for all the comments I appreciate it.
Canhunter, I didn't ask for anything specific other than I didn't want the nose to be bright and shiny like others that I have seen. I wanted it to look like the deer that I shot. I do see the nose and chest issues that you brought up. That is what I was looking for, so that I can evaluate a good mount vs. poor if I ever have someoneelse do a mount for me. Thanks to all.
Prince, I pmed you.

Thanks for the PM. I live in Utah County, so where you specified is a little far for me to drive. Thanks anyway.

cathunter, I would say then you have a great mount if you specifically wanted the things I down graded for my likes. Based on you wanting those things and they turned out to your specs that shows good taxidermy work. What was the cost and turn around time? Don't vacume it and keep it out of the direct sunlight. Stick a few more up in the future.

canhunter, I only specified the nose. I believe it was $450-475 and about 10 months. I may be moving shortly and a moving company will be doing the move, what precautions should I take?THanks again,

Another thing to check for is the seam on top of the head. This is where they cut the cape to remove from the skull, it usuall starts on top of the head and works down towards the back about 6 inches. When I look at mounts before I pick them up, I will always check that seam.

Muleyslyr,
I don't think putting any mounts above fireplaces are a good idea. I don't think the light would be a problem.

Wacathunter,
I would move the mount myself. I have moved a number of times in the 28 years since I had the mount done and I don't trust anyone else to move for me.

cathunter, not a bad price and turn around time. As far as moving I guess it depends on how far you are moving. I would not trust a moving company unless they have done it before, and would totally protect it. It is easy to build a wood frame to protect the mount. I built one out of 1x1 and 3/4 inch plywood. Screw the mount down to the plywood after you have glued/screwed 1x1 around the other side. Then Build a matching "cage" that will fit around the mount and screw the sides to the base. The only part I would not glue is where the 1x1 uprights screw to the base. Then face it with cardboard stapled to it. You can go heavier with the wood but it would be heavy. As long as it is put on the top it is more then strong enough. I made only one box like this to haul a buds mount that had to go in the back of the PU.

So I see that you finally got the milk off it's lips... And whats this talk about moving??

Jim, I sent you a pm.

Thanks for the advise on moving it. I will have to talk to the movers and see if they are experienced in this if not I have a way I can put it in the cab of the truck. You get some rather strange looks with a buck sitting shotgun with you. Thanks again.
