LAST EDITED ON Oct-08-11 AT 10:25PM (MST)[p]I can't believe it happened, but I got a bull today. It was a pretty miserable day up until we got the elk. Everything was wet, it was snowing on us, and we hadn't seen any elk all day.

At about 1230 we were calling it quits and heading back to the car when we decided to peak over one last ridge to kind of get an idea for the next time we go up. About 60 yards away there was a bull scraping his antlers on some aspens. I couldn't believe my eyes. My buddy and I had decided whoever spotted the elk first would get to shoot, so I got to shoot. The bull had no idea I was there until I chambered a round. He wipped his head around and looked right at me. I had to make it fast and shot. He lurched forward and ran about 30 yards and stopped, I shot again and he went down.

The pack out was pretty narly as we hiked out a way we didnt really know. We will never go that way again. It was all downhill, but too downhill. Cliffs in many areas. It was actually pretty scary

Edit: you guys are right, my buddy and I talked it over and we are gonna go in on foot tomorrow and get the rest. I know the meat would be fine for another day, but it will be best to just get it done.

Anyways, here are the promised pics, He isn't HUGE, but he is pretty dang nice for the general any bull. The only other bull that I've killed was a spike.

Nice bull and congrats on an any bull unit find. My question is, why are you waiting til monday to get the rest of him out?

It's always an adventure!!!

The guy who has horses can't go in with us until monday. Plus, the meat should be fine. We have both quarters hung up, with the hide off, with a game bag over them. Plus, they are at a pretty high elevation, so it will be plenty cool.

I may have scared someone off by saying how scary the pack out was. However, that is because we went a different way. If you were to offer horses we could go in the way we got to the bull and out that way and the pack out would not be difficult at all.

1st off congrats on a good bull!
2nd (not trying to be too rude) you need to suck it up and go pack that bull out!! I bet you didn't leave the head up there.?
Don't wait for a complete stranger to offer up some horses. If you couldn't/didn't want to pack it out you shouldn't have shot it.
Good luck!

My buddy and I have rethought our strategy. We are going in tomorrow on foot to get the rest. The original post has been updated to reflect this.

Congrats on a tough to get general bull. He's a fine looking bull! A little sweat and hard work packin him out will make it that much more satisfying in the end.
