Guys, I'm thinking of applying for either Colorado's Unit 14 Mt. Zirkel Wilderness area or Unit 6/7 Rawah Wilderness area, Early high altitude deer hunt. Have any of you hunted these or know much about them? Please feel free to PM me. Thanks in advance.

Hiker, Funny that we are replying to one another. The Rawah side does not have many deer. That's where CWD started and the Colorado G&F has tried to kill as many as they can for years. There could be a big deer, but they will be scarce.

The Zirkel side has more deer, but it is much lower than many other areas for numbers. As with any Colorado area, there could be a monster, but they won't be in the same numbers as other areas. That's the reason for the better draw oddds.

I have not personally hunted there early, but have been there later in the year. I'm thinking about this hunt myself, so I'll be curious to see if anyone else chimes in.

Have spent some time in the Rawah wilderness and ICM you are correct. The deer are few and far between up there at that time. We have seen some decent bucks but nothing worth hauling off of the mountain. It is a beautiful area though and I am never disappointed when we make the trip.

I have been to both areas and have actually seen more deer in the rawahs. I have spent time bowhunting elk in unit 7 (east side of the divide) about the same time that rifle tag is valid. The quality part of the hunt maybe a bit tough but there is a few good ones.
As far as CWD in those units it is there but has a low prevelance because it is farther from Fort Collins than oither units. I dont think it has had much effect there and CDOW has not culled up there (as far as I know).
Cojack is right on the scenery up there! Absolutely beautiful!
