CWMU vs DWR?

I hope this post comes across as non-bashing and not to controversial.
Ive had this discussion probably 759 times with the guys I work with.
So im curious to see what you guys think.

In our discussions the subject is brought up about who does a better job at management, CWMU's or the DWR.
In the debate, we discuss and compare the two.
Here are a few of our thoughts.

1 - Elk tags are more expensive then deer tags.

2 - We think the DWR focuses more on elk management then deer because it gives the DWR more revenue.

3 - Elk herds and high scoring bulls have never been better here in Utah because of their management.

4 - Deer are not doing that great, they may be recovering but still its not like it used to be.

5 - Because they focus more management on elk then deer the deer herds have and are suffering.

6 - Now, you look at how CWMU's, at least those that really make an effort to manage their herds, they seem to have alot of deer on their land, and alot of bucks. I have been on enough of them to see for myself and compare them to public land.

7 - Is this a a coincidence, or do you believe that what you see is what you get. CWMU's manage the deer better and therefore have larger herds, better buck to doe ratios, and more big bucks?

7.5 - It has to be more than just predators to make the deer herds diminish like they have.

8 - Can their be a balance in the management for deer and elk to make them thrive, or is one always going to have precendence over the other?

I love hunting them both deer and elk and want to see the deer have as much succes as the elk have. Give credit to the DWR for making elk hunting so good, but why has their been a downturn in deer hunting. I remember seeing so many deer I coulndt count them this time of year. Now I go out and I count maybe a couple hundred all day.

We would like to know what you guys think. We talk about it for hours when it is brought up at work.

Thanks

CWMU's do a better job because deer hunters are limited. Why is our elk herds are great---because it is VERY limited. Utah could easily have the best deer herd anywhere, it would just come at the cost of lost opportunity.

My wife drew a CWMU deer tag a few years back... deer were EXTREMELY scarse. We only saw 2 bucks on the entire 25,000 acres. Very disappointed, she ended up shooting a 20" 2pt. The other group of hunters on the property at the same time hadnt even seen a doe.

I know of 2 paying clients that hunted this same CWMU that same year, they didnt get anything.

Some CWMUs do have terrific hunting but dont think they all do.

>So how do deicde which unit
>has good hunting and which
>does not?

IMO, word of mouth & contacting people who hunted the units.

Is there an easy way to find out who drew for these tags recently? I want to put in for them this year and just don't know. Is there anyone out there that can tell me of some good success that they have had for a buck CWMU? I have always had second thoughts when I have put in for CWMU. I think that you just never know. I have had a couple of bad operators and one or two good ones. Most of my hunts on CWMU have been for antlerless but still. I think that your odds of drawing are better with CWMU but I think that you are taking a chance.
