I've got a 4th season elk tag in the Gunnison basin and curious if anyone has any pointers. This will be my first last season elk hunt ever, as I am usually an archery hunter. Its a bit of a change for me and looking for any advice on the area (which I have never hunted before) or on late season bulls in general. Thanks. PM me if you prefer.

Be prepared for winter weather, snow and temps below zero are not unusual. Not much snow in the West Elks right now, but we're supposed to get more tonight/tomorrow. Lots of access points from hwy 50. Access on the west side off Black Mesa is rough/steep. You'll see lots of road hunters, get off the road and shoot the 1st legal bull you see. Elk will head for private property on the east side.

I just hunted the 2nd rifle season there.

As far as 4th season, I can recommend a few places to try, but you really are going to want horses and/or snow machines to get in there, an ATV might work, but you may have mechanical issues if the temps are below -20. Tire chains are mandatory if you are going to get off the highway at all.

If you don't have access to any of the above and are truck hunting, chain up and head up red creek, rainbow or 609. If you have ATV/horse access send me a PM.
