Shed mount

Since many people are starting to get their taxidermy back, I thought I would show the one I just had done. It is a pair of sheds picked up last year by my son and friend BucksNducks. It is the third set we have found from this buck. The cape was from my sons 2005 WY buck.

The taxidermist wanted to try a different look with the ears so I gave the go ahead. I realize that some may like it and some may not as ear positions is a personal thing.

I have pretty thick skin so feel free to comment on your likes and dislikes for future reference.

Many people wonder why anyone would bother mounting sheds. This is the 4th set of sheds I have had mounted with 1 more in the works. Each one has special memories with friends involved and I always enjoy looking at the deer on the wall. You may also feel free to guess score and with.

That is a very nice set of sheds. As far as the ears go I agre everybody has their own opinion. My Ol Man has a set of Blacktail sheds that when I get the extra money I'm going to have them mounted, they are the largest set of Blacktail horns I have ever seen. Very nice deer mount you have, Congrats.

I like it YELUM. It has a beautiful head. Can you tell me what manniquin the taxidermist used for the mount?? Steve

LAST EDITED ON Jan-28-07 AT 03:25PM (MST)[p]Beautiful mount. Great taxi work, who did it for you? The ears are a very natural position for a rutting/posturing buck. If you ever watch a mature buck tending a doe and another buck is in the area, the buck will put his head down, ears back like your mount and walk stiff legged toward the subordinate buck. This is known as posturing. The subordinate buck will usually become submissive and walk away, unless he thinks he's all that, then there may be a fight. Again, beautiful mount! I really like it.

That is AWESOME! I love it! Gives me a good idea for my next mount. Just have to shoot one that is worthy of mounting. ;)

What great taxi work!

I like the ears they are definately different than most mounts. I believe it is a great idea sometimes to let the taxidermist "do his own thing" and express his/her talents, too many people go to the taxi open up a book and say I want my animal to look just like that. Real taxidemist's are artists and should be able to express at least some of thier talents in every mount.

I also feel the same way about mounting sheds. I have a few sets that I would love to get mounted sometime.

I can see why you gave your taxi the go ahead, you can trust him to do awesome work. I can see that buck posturing right now. I say he is 27 wide and 187 gross. Great job!

Yelum,

Awesome buck and mount. I wouldn't hesitate having him mount a set of sheds. I believe you use the same taxidermist that I have used in the past. My brother and I have two bucks (both from the book cliffs) and an elk that he has mounted. I know his work anywhere I go and he will always be my first choice.

I love this different look and I would agree with some of the others that have posted. This is one of the finer mounts that I have seen on this sight so far. Great find on the sheds and great taxi work. His work is second to none.

He looks awesome Larry! Heck if I ever find a big set like that I'll be for having them mounted up as well! Like you, I'd much rather spend money decorating my house that way than buying a picture or some flower boquet. :)

Hopefully we can round up set number 5 from him this year!

That is a unique mount for sure! I guess to be honest I would have to let it grow on me. I like the concept though, but maybe for a Cabelas display? Just my little old opinion. Great looking set of sheds. Love the square frame.

Great mount, Iv'e always wanted to have a buck mounted in the sneak posistion, two years ago I shot a big buck in Colorado, as I jumped him and he tried running away, this is how he had looked, head out down low and ears laid back as to be listening.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Great to hear others thought and ideas.

Greybeard, the form is a Mckenzie full sneak, but it was modified a bit by the taxi. He rarely leaves a form as is.

7MM, the taxi is Dirk Barnes out of Hooper UT. He's slow and expensive but I think he's worth the wait.

BCBOY, you have too many big bucks to mount, better just give em away :)

Nvr, your sheds put these to shame and you still didn't mount them. But then you keep killing big bucks, so your taxi will always be busy anyway.

AZ, very close. He sets just under 29 wide and grosses 193+. Good luck to all shed hunters this spring.

Yelum, I think the taxidermy work is top notch and I like the ears a lot. One question for you though. The antlers LOOK like a set of sheds. Kind of bleached out on top but with more natural color towards the bases. Were they left that way intentionally? Could they have been "stained" to make them more uniform?

You had that set mounted for all the right reasons and I think that's great. I'm thinking of some day having a set of sheds mounted myself.

Love it!

These days finding a buck year after year is a hard task, so I wouldn't hesitate to throw a mount together..

Yes they're a bit bleached and I do plan on staining them naturally by rubbing tree branches on them a little latter in the year. I had them mounted detachable so I can just take them off and work on them. As you can see, the right antler is more bleached than the left, but the camera flash makes them both look whiter than they really are. He wasn't a real dark horned buck. Thanks again everyone for the kind words.
