huntin fool

If you have never had it, get it! If you apply in more than one state and don't want to research it allot, get it! I don't believe you need to get it every year to be able to keep up with there picks. For some states its the same picks every year. I wish they would put odds for residents in all there issues. My 2 cents!

I have been a member for the last 5yrs and I drew two tags last year one in Or. and one in Calif. both deer tags. When applying for Calif. I used their top 5 picks and drew the unit they had listed first. When I called them and asked them for info. about the unit they said "Oh, that unit is not that good" I said you had it listed first, he said " that does not mean it is our #1 pick". He went on to say he did not have much info on the unit I drew.

Long story short, why did he even list that unit? and why give them $100.00 to tell me nothing? They did not provide me with any info. on either unit.

That is my experience and unfortunatley it was not a good one, so needless to say I will not be giving them $100.00 this year.

I'm not slamming them, I'm just sharing my experience and anwsering your post.

I think it is well worth it. Once you draw Garth will give you phone #'s of members who have hunted it in the past few years. Good articles in the mag also on hunts and gear.

if you concentrate on one species only(ex-elk) it's probably not worth the money as a person can keep up with whats happening in the states. But when you start doing most species in 3,4,5 states it helps sift through each stats bs. If you contact them after drawing a tag they will help with some contact info.
I do subscribe.

Just my 2 cents..........everyone complains about how hard it is to draw a tag, how you dont stand a chance in some states unless you have max bonus points. Good luck to those older folks that havent begun to accumulate those points yet.

These services and the people that use them are the problem. Any dipwad that can read only has to flip to a page and bam!!!!! "thats the unit I'm putting in for" no more research or scouting. Some of these units were hard enough to draw before these idiots started making money hand over fist putting you in for all the top units across the country.

Hire someone to do the research, hire someone to do the scouting, hire someone to lead you around and tell you when to shoot, then claim the animal you stud.

Is that ethical?

<<Some of these units were hard enough to draw before these idiots started making money hand over fist putting you in for all the top units across the country.>>
I see these "idiots" hunting and fishing all over the world and doing the things they love in life. What are you doing muleybull?

I think the sevrice is great. Great info and honest opinions. You still need to do your own research and scouting though. Its great for DIY guys who just need to be pointed in the right direction. You can't get to much info!

Muleybull is right on. Unless you are very deep into the various points systems, you stand virtually zero chance of drawing their top pics. If you are just now starting to apply in the Western states, you over a decade behind. Sometimes even one year behind will mean drawing a tag in your lifetime, or not.

I was a Huntin' Fool member for many years (didn't renew this year). Garth puts out a quality product, but the sheer numbers of people who view the information lessens its value. Another reason I quit is the dramatic escalation in application costs. Just a few years ago a guy could apply to all the Western states for less than $500. Now it costs me $355 for just Wyoming. This cost will only incease yearly, as these Game and Fish agencies figure out they can make more money off points than actual tag sales (Wyo bighorn sheep).

Sorry to paint a dismal picture, but a person needs to know all the facts before he just jumps right in and starts to apply for everything.

I really believe that the internet is the real reason for the increased dificulty in drawing premium tags, not services like Hunting Fool. The internet and forums like this make it a lot easier for people to learn about what states are best, what units are best, what seasons are best, etc. without having to put forth any effort on their own. I'm sure that many, many more people read forums like MM, Bowsite, etc. than subscribe to services like Hunting Fool.

I just recently joined Hunting Fool, not as a single means of selecting units, but as another tool in my extensive research. As someone previously mentioned, it is good for those who apply for numerous species in numerous states. I apply for elk, deer, sheep, and goats in 9 states and it hopefully will provide me with some additional information to suplement my other research.

I won't use it as a single refernce tool in selecting which units to apply for. In fact, one of the biggest reasons for me joining was to find out what they are recommending so I can avoid some of their top picks.

Answer to that is they better use every bit of info they can to get tags I think the hunting fool is some of that info

(These services and the people that use them are the problem. Any dipwad that can read only has to flip to a page and bam!!!!! "thats the unit I'm putting in for")

Well that aint really all that true as if you read the hunting fool you will see that the odds suck and you can try for it or not infact a lot of people I have talked to say hell with those odds I wont put in for that unit

(no more research or scouting)

Ya whatever if someone draws these hard to draw tags you are crying about and dont do any scouting thats there fault

(Some of these units were hard enough to draw before these idiots started making money hand over fist putting you in for all the top units across the country.)

Yup and its only going to get a lot worse better get any info you can get your hands on

(Hire someone to do the research, hire someone to do the scouting, hire someone to lead you around and tell you when to shoot, then claim the animal you stud.)

Wow how did you find all these good areas did you stumble over them or did a freind tell you or did you here it somewhere that it was good

Have you ever had a freind help you on a hunt

If you can answer no to these last 2 then WOW U ARE A STUD!!!!

So in other words stop crying if you dont like it dont buy it but really dont knock it hell the anti hunters just love seeing that

LAST EDITED ON Jan-31-07 AT 01:49PM (MST)[p]I'll be the first to admit that I'm a cheapskate. Why pay someone to apply for you when you can do it yourself. Why pay someone to do the research for you when you can do it yourself. Why pay someone to scout for you, why pay to have them hunt for you, when you can do it all yourself. Not all folks that hire guides are a pain, some people just dont know what they are doing, but a larger number of people are just lazy. Why do it yourself when you got the money to have someone do it for you. This pertains to subjects outside of hunting and fishing, its become a way of life these days.

I know this because I've done a little guiding.........very little, I'm not much of a babysitter. When you have a guy that has hunted all across the nation, and sometimes across the world asks you if he should load his gun after you leave the vehicle...........well, maybe its just me, but its time to start thinking on your own. All the guys I've guided asked the same question immediately after youve spotted the animal your hunting......."whats he score?" They are in it for the right reason. Some are great people, just too lazy to do it on their own.

isaynunya, Ive done pretty good for myself, and my daughter over the years despite the growing difficulty in drawing a tag. I dont even put in for the trophy units, but according to a particular magazine, the average units I put in for are to notch, so I'll gripe at my ever decreasing chances to draw.

I like to do things myself, little too much self respect i guess, but I'm sure I'm not alone.

Dont mistake the use of the magazine with swapping information with a friend. Friends have taken me into some great areas, and vice versa, but is that the same as the number of people that are getting the information from the mags, or from other application services that dont require you to do anything but pay for the states you want them to put you in for. Its clear which people guys like me will be leading through the woods telling them when and what to shoot.

Is that ethical?

Garth either needs to cap his subscribers at 5k or drop the price of his service by 2/3 of the current cost. To many people are getting the same info you are.

I'm a cheapskate too. I spilt a subscription with a co-worker.

I like the "Tentative Application Drawing Schedule" - have it posted on my wall at work. Reminds me of when I need to apply.

It is a great TOOL, but you still have to think outside the box. Being listed as a top-5 or top-10 unit can be the kiss-o-death if you're trying to draw it.

I feel the same way I wish he would cap his deal but I know it would take a lot for me to do that if I was running it but I would pay twice as much as now if it was capped I just hate the fact that he was giving out the jan issues at the last big deal in SLC but like I said I would be doing the same thing

MuskegMan

I think you hit it on the head its another TOOL and just getting it to remind me of when to put in is worth the $100 plus hell I love reading the storys and talking to people that draw tags

Muleybull

I see your points but saying that someone that uses some of these services is unethical WOW thats a little over the top aint it I would rather these people go on guided hunts then go out and protest hunting and there is a lot of people that go on guided hunts that would would show us a thing or two about hunting so dont think that if a guy gos on a guided hunt he is a idiot.

The new guy, Adam called me at work the other day
and was very helpfull. He seems like a nice feller'.
I hope he stays that way. Bet he will.

Toole, go back a month ago and you'll see 2 other similar threads.

Used it for 5-6 years and compared one year's specific month's issue to the next year's same month and sometimes no changes. Used it for states i had no idea on but avoided their recommendations on Cali, Nv, Co and Ore cause I know those states and knew draw odds on their RX's would be long. One tip, rule change, etc in one state that they identify can be worth the price of the subscription though.

I feel Garth and Alan Pennington personally tripled the price of Colorado landowner tags over a 2 year period so "I" won't ever give him anymore of my money. Not a bad tool but realize you are sharing the info with 15,000 others plus the people they share/apply with.

UThunting, I'm not saying that everyone that uses a guide is an idiot (at least didnt mean it to sound that way), there are lots of good reasons to hire guides.

I never said its unethical, thats just my signature......me being a smart arse. The E word is used so friggin much on this site I'm begining to thing the owner of this site gets some kind of royalty everytime the word shows up.

Is that ethical?

SDBUGLER is right. It is the internet and we are in the information age now. Face it everyone there are more trophy hunters now and more people period. The resource is limited. It's the law of supply and demand. The good thing about trophy hunters is that they go home with tag soup much more often and have the mentality to let those young bucks grow up. It does suck that we can't draw as often but this isn't the old west anymore.

muleybull

Sorry I didnt read you rite I just feel strongly about the use of everything you can get your hands on that are legal and ethical I have never said anything about the hunting fool tell of late as I was getting sick of guys dishing it out on them when there only trying to help and make a living I think we would all love to do the same thing in one way or the other

Anyway good hunting to you and hope you have a GREAT fall in 2007
