Ok I know this is a Hunting forum and not a gun forum but I need some information on a rifle I just bought. At the time it sound like a good buy but now I'm wondering what I bought and maybe considering to sale it or hold on to it as a investment depending on what I find out. It is a Weatherby Mark V Made in Japan in a 300 Weatherby Mag. It has a straight stock that appears to be some type of hard wood. Rifle is in good to great condition with little handle wear on wood stock. Bluing is in great condition with no wear signs. It has a older Leupold VX II 3-9X40 scope with Redfield rings and bases. What would you say the value is of this set up? Thanks for any information you can share on this rifle.

google "gunvalues board" and you will get an exact value, you could also check for similer guns on the "gunbroker" or "gunsamerica" site.

IMO your gun is worth 250- 300 bucks with the scope. but since i'm a nice guy, i'll offer you 400 for it right now. p.m. me your shipping address so i can send a personal check;)

pics please. the stock you described doesnt sound original but id like to see it

LAST EDITED ON Nov-16-11 AT 03:07AM (MST)[p] Hey hope these pictures help with helping me figure out the value. And I'm not going to sale this Weatherby for $400, are you crazy? I spent more than that and my friend really wants the scope bad, he offered me $200 for it, he says they don't make scopes like they use to. From what I have researched these Japan made Weatherbys are some of the best made and most accurate and are highly sight after by collectors and Weatherby fans.

It's a Classic Mark. I think they stopped production on them in 2000? You can find them NIB for about 900.00 to 1000.00. Nice rifle.

All things considered, it is a very good rifle to have, especially if you are in it right.

You would be foolish to sell that scope for $200, since you could not replace that quality in that price range.

The research i have done i was able to find out the Japan made Weatherbys were made from 1972 - 1994 and some of the best made to date. What would you say is the value of the rifle.

Not hardly an expert on the Weatherby rifles but I'm sure that ColoradoRam is spot on. Its a Mark V Classic - about the only Weatherby ever made without their butt-ugly stock. This one seems to have a decent piece of wood, shows some handling but seems in good shape.

And as far as being made in Japan, which it was but lots of the collectors go for the German Weatherbys, not saying they were better but more collectable maybe??

Its s nice rifle, not sure its a collectors item, I'd take it and shoot it. As far as worth, $1,000 +/- for a Weatherby fan I suppose.

With the scope included I would agree 1,000 + or - a bit. I also agree that German Weatherbys are fairly collectable. I would keep it. It's hard to sell rifles like these in this economy.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-16-11 AT 03:03PM (MST)[p]Weatherby was made in Germany by J.P.Sauer and probably the most well known of the lot. I had mine built the way I wanted mine done back in late 1968 and it took almost a year to be built back then with the orders that Weatherby use to get. Mine even had a Weatherby Scope, a 2x7 Varible.

Still have it but replace the scope with a Zeiss because the Weatherby cross hairs in scope were very fine lines and with my ageing eyes I had a hard time seeing the lines. Still have the scope in a box and also the rifle is in the safe so RELH can not get it.....LOL

You are looking at selling the thing for about $1200 with the scope. Maybe a little more.

Great setup though, and I personally would not sell it.

Thanks everyone for the information and I think I'm going to hold on to it. Maybe one day I can afford to shot it :p. I fall in love with the weatherby once i saw it.

looks nice. i bet its a kicker though. those straight stocks were replaced by the monte carlo style for a reason. im glad youre keeping it 300 wby is an awesome round. ps you can ammo made by hornady, federal, remington, and others that make it cheaper than the weatherby brand.

Yes, but if you want the true weatherby performance, only use weatherby factory ammo. If you throw cheap Remington, federal or any other standard manufacture brand through it, you might as well trade it in for a .300 win mag. Those brands don't even come close to weatherby's factory rounds. If you don't believe me, find a chronygraph and go to work ;-)

Can I get better results from reloading rounds or is the weatherby ammo the best there is? If so what combo of powder, caseing, primer, and bullets should i consider reloading with if i find someone to reload for me.

Dang.........here we were thinkin' you got a good deal on a fine big game rifle..... and now you want to go play with it, like it is some kind of cheap varmint killer.

This is a specialized tool for one purpose.

There is NO substitute for the ammo that was designed for that rifle. Buy a box of Weatherby ammo, shoot 3 rounds to be sure it is hitting "minute of elk", and put the thing away until you have a tag.

You won't enjoy shooting it for "fun" and if that is what you intend, trade it off for a .243, or ????

Also, "finding someone to reload for me" is REALLY dumb, if you don't know them and their reloading experience.

But hey, it's your rifle, do what you want.

Im shooting the factory Weatherby in 165gr Barnes TSX out of my Mark V .300wby, it's incredibly deadly. They cost about $65 per box.......well worth it!!

I am shooting hand loads with 165 Hornady SST's, kills everything I hit. I love my rifle it is my favorite caliber, and I feel confident with it out to a long ways(can't say how far someone on here will accuse you of being unethical). Do some hand loading and you will find a round that works great for a margin of the cost, and always catch your brass.

@Nickman It was just a qustion and I do have a very close friend that reloads my 30-06 and 270rounds and i do have to say, he knows what he is doing. I already order two boxes of ammo made by weatherby they are the 180 Partition, put me back about 140 dollars but im sure it will be worth it.

P.S. I have many rifles to just go shotting with including a Sako Forester 243 that does a number on Coyotes. The only reason I was asking the questions i did, is because many guys on the forum have PM me or wrote me stating that they get better groups with reloads. But they didnt say what they are using so i figured i would ask.

Thanks guys for the Info it has been a great deal of help already ordered two boxes of ammo so lets see how it shots when they come in. The local sporting goods store doesnt carry these rounds for some reason so I had to order from online. I'll let you know if i llove it or if it is up for sale :p lol jk im holding on to this one for a long time. thanks again and good hunting and safe hunting to.

It's Just a Weatherby.
Put some Notches in the wood stock or it's useless.
Tools are made to use & abuse, when it gets a few notches on it the value will go up.

Hot Dog,Hot Damn,I love this Ameri-can
